Dear friends,
In about a month, my friends and I will be recieveing the sacrament of Confirmation. The letter below is our letter to the Bishop, explaining why we would like to be confirmed. If you could please proof read it, give some advice, all will be appreciated. Well God bless, and thanks.
The most reverend Michael Pheifer, Bishop of the San Angelo Diocese,
We’d like to thank you in advance for your prayers and providing us with the guidance, support, and assistance in nurturing our relationship with Christ. We have been preparing ourselves for the next step in our spiritual journey, Confirmation. St Thomas put it best when he said “Confirmation is to baptism, what growth is to generation”.
The Holy spirit is revealed as the third person of the Holy Trinity, and he works for Gods purpose. The Holy Spirit was involved in Jesus’ conception, and was given to Jesus in the form of a dove at his baptism. Jesus was guided and empowered by the spirit to carry out his public ministry. Jesus apostles received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and after that they went and preached the good news. The Holy Spirit keeps the church from falling into error when it comes to the faith, and is proclaimed in the Creed, which is what we as Catholics basically believe. The Holy spirit came to us at baptism and washed away original sin and made us pure. The Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of those who were baptized, then at Confirmation, the Holy Spirit strengthens us to be Solders of Christ. At this time, we are to go, and do like the original 12 Apostles, preach the good news to the entire world.
At confirmation, we receive 7 gifts from the Holy Spirit. They are Wisdom, Understanding, Judgement, Courage, Knowledge, Love, Reverence for God. Wisdom, the body of knowledge, can be used in our daily life from deciding something as small as to what to wear, to a major life changing event, such as our vocation. Understanding gives us the ability to listen and learn from our mistakes. Judgement is our conscience given to us to help us decipher between right and wrong. Courage, the quality of mind given to us by God, enables us to stand fast in the face of opposition. Knowledge can be gained every Sunday at mass. This type of knowledge keeps the world going for generations to come because without the knowledge of God, the world is nothing. Love, the greatest gift God bestowed upon us, is expressed through his crucifixion. Reverence for God is very important, because it reveals the respect we should have for God.
In preparation for the final sacrament of initiation, we have been attending CCD, going to mass every Sunday, praying, forgiving, and following the ten commandments. We have been receiving the sacraments as often as we can, especially the Eucharist and The sacrament of Reconciliation, because we know we should be in a state of grace, for the Holy Spirit is not given for the purpose of taking away sin, but of conferring additional grace. In order for there to be a true transformation of self, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the change. Our lifestyle has to consist of self-discipline and a true relationship with Jesus Christ. To remain connected to Christ in a meaningful prayer life and be obedient to the purpose God has called us for. We would like to be recognized by the Catholic Church as fully dedicated believers. We can’t wait to receive the Holy Spirit at Confirmation, another stepping stone in our journey to salvation.
