Please Recommend a Good Book on Moral Theology

I have a book on moral theology by Jone and Adelman from 1947. Though I hear the book was recommended by Fr. Levis from EWTN this book appears to be outdated in certain areas. If I were to get a newer book on moral theology I wouldn’t have to worry about reading any outdated information. Could someone recommend a good book on moral theology for me that is up to date and very reliable? Thanks in advance for your help!
 
I found Peter Kreeft’s Back to Virtue very helpful (published by Ignatius Press). It’s not meant to be a scholarly treatise, however.

In that vein, I also recommend Moral Darwinism by Ben Wiker. Wiker takes the approach of looking at the contemporary decline in morals via case studies of those prominent individuals who led us to where we are today. Very interesting.

Of course, you don’t want to overlook the third pillar of the Catechism: CCC 1691-2557. 🙂

WIlliam May penned Moral Theology: An Introduction : tis good. The Catechism is pretty much the one though. WIth a whole section dedicated to the topic

I have not read this book, but if William May wrote it, you can bet that it’s good. He’s one of the best moral theologians in the U.S. today.

Yes the one you mention is a classic work of causistic moral theology…but yes it is out dated …though still useful (with care and knowledge of moral theology)

Thanks for your recommendations. Do you know which - if any - of the books you mentioned is most like the book on Moral Theology I have. I like my book very much and the way it is set up - the only problem is I don’t know what is outdated.

That’s a book on general Moral Theology.

I’d suggest that if you’re looking to read on Moral theology, that you work from the general to the specific. It’s tempting, for example, if you want to learn about biomedical ethics and morality to just jump right in. Better, methinks, to read on the basics first. Otherwise, one can run into difficult examples where there is a lot of grey area.

Moral theology attempts to give grounding principles in order to work out morality, not give a set of specifics for every moral situation. 🙂
