Please recommend a good book to study the Old Testament

Please recommend a good book to study the Old Testament. The book will be used in a class of lay adult Catholics. These people may or may not have much formal education of the Old Testament.

Please let me know which books are good and why you recommend them. Also, let me know if there are any books that you would NOT recommend, and please state why. Thanks.
 
Genesis.

Always a good place to start. Plenty to study; books have been written on Gen. 1-11.

The “Come and See” Series has one on Genesis and the Pentateuch.

There’s also a good online Bible Study on the Old Testament at AgapeBibleStudy.Com. It’s a 28 lesson study with the 1st 23 covering from Genesis to Maccabees. Incidentally, there are other fantastic Bible Studies at this site - John, James, Romans, Hebrews, Revelation, etc. Great site!

Scott Hahn’s A Father Who Keeps His Promises might be a good single book to cover all of the OT.
 
My Personal Recommendation is to get the Navarre Bible with its full Study notes an commentary.

E.g. The Pentateuch itself can overwhelm you, when ypu patiently study the Introductions, read the text and follow the comprehensive commentary.

Didiche Series - Understanding the Scriptures by **Dr Scott Hahn **

Reading the Old Testament by Lawrence Boadt.
