to be used as our opening prayer tomorrow. I teach 8th graders who are preparing for Confirmation on April 5. 🙂

We open each class with a different prayer each Sunday. My purpose is to show each student that there are MANY Catholic prayers available when they need help or inspiration.

However, since I have my own biases, I wanted to reach out and get some fresh ideas, just in case my selections have proven to be just that–MY selections.

Thanks:newidea:

Psalm 51 maybe? A good one for lent and for preparing for confession before confirmation.

I don’t have a psalm, but when I played with a group in my parish, a great song for Confirmation is "By Name, I Have Called You.’ by Carey Landry.

“Lord send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth”.
Psalm 104.
If you parish liturgist is on top of things, this will be Psalm at the Confirmation Mass.
(Provided it’s not on a Sunday) 👍

Thanks Jilly. It is truly appropriate because we are preparing for confession (two weeks out) with a thorough evaluation of conscience tomorrow which is appropriate to teens.

I just read versions from four different bibles. This one is not Catholic, nor is it as beautiful as some versions. However, my class may understand this better than the others:

*O loving and kind God, have mercy. Have pity upon me and take away the awful stain of my transgressions. Wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. For I admit my shameful deed—it haunts me day and night. It is against you and you alone that I have sinned and did this terrible thing. You saw it all, and your sentence against me is just. But I was born a sinner, from the moment my mother conceived me. You deserve honesty from the heart; yes, utter sincerity and truthfulness. Please give me this wisdom.

Sprinkle me with the cleansing blood and I shall be clean again. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. And after you have punished me, give me back my joy again. Don’t keep looking at my sins—erase them from your sight. Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don’t toss me aside, banished forever from your presence. Don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to other sinners, and they—guilty like me—will repent and return to you. Don’t sentence me to death. O my God, you alone can rescue me. Then I will sing of your forgiveness, for my lips will be unsealed—oh, how I will praise you!

Do You want penance; if you did, how gladly I would do it! But You are not interested in offerings burned before you on the altar. It is a broken spirit you want—remorse and penitence. A broken and a contrite heart, O God, is that which you will not ignore.
And Lord, don’t punish Israel for my sins—help your people and protect Jerusalem. And when my heart is right, then you will rejoice in the good that I do, and in the sacrifice I bring to your altar.
*

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks for the rec Jim. I will talk with our cantor and Pastor on this and the rest of the music.

Clare,

I just checked last year’s notes…good call…looking for a repeat!

Sometimes it does take extra effort to help others find a way into a prayer which might seem quite clear to yourself. Catholic bibles are created to be read by Catholics (and non-Catholics also of course) and are approved as free from error.👍

Perhaps God is providing you with an opportunity to help these soon to be confirmed teens become familiar and comfortable with His Word, provided to them by His church? 🙂

May God bless you and your young adults.

JT,

I really appreciate your kindness. It was hard for me to even admit what I was thinking, as I knew it was less than they deserved. The reason I offered that version was because after twenty weeks with my class, I know what they get and what they struggle with. They don’t understand poetry at all. I didn’t either at age 13 or 14. The translation I used is modern enough for them to get it.

Now that I have my shoulder pads and helmet on, let me have it 😛 I can still be persuaded!

I like the Psalm 51 in NAB Catholic version, it uses classic Catholic phrases, like in verse 12 “A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.” or verse 4 4Thoroughly wash away my guilt; and from my sin cleanse me."
