My mom and I have had a tumultuous relationship since my sister died when I was 13. She has paranoid personality disorder. My teen years were a nightmare. Getting married at 18 saved my sanity. Things have improved over the years but she still has episodes. Her and my dad are fighting (for the millionth time). He bought a second house about 12 years ago to have someplace to escape to when she flips out. That’s how they’ve stayed married.

Some back story on the latest…My mom & Dad went to visit my mom’s family in another state for Christmas. Her sister has a dog. My mom fell in love with the dog. (When I was little we had to give away our beagle when my mom became allergic to him after having him for about 10 years). She comes home and wants a dog just like my aunt’s dog. She says she’s not allergic to this dog. Within days of coming home she gets a dog (the most impulsive thing my parents have ever done by the way.)

She’s had the dog for about two weeks. A few days ago my daughter and I went over to their house because my daughter really loves the dog and wanted to play with him. We bought the little doggie a coat. My mom was at the store when we got there. My dad went to pick her up (she doesn’t drive) and as soon as she comes in the house she says she has to get rid of the dog, she’s allergic to the dog. My daughter got emotional because she’s fallen in love with dog. My mom says matter of factly “Well I’m having trouble breathing so he has to go. I called the lady we got him from and she says she’ll call me when she finds someone to take him. But I can’t wait long so one way or another he has to go.”

That night I talked to my husband and he agreed that we could take the dog. Anyways…last night after work I had car trouble. My dad picked me up because my husband works afternoons. This morning we went to have my car towed to the auto shop -my dad had the dog with him. He went to his other house last night because they got in a fight. While we’re out my daughter calls me and says “grandma called and she told me to call grandpa and tell him to give her back her dog. Then she wants me to call her back and let her know when grandpa is bringing back her dog.” I told my daughter I will call grandma, don’t call her back, I don’t want her involving you.

So I call my mom, she carried on, I firmly but politely asked not to involve my daughter in her and my dad’s fights. She tried to defend…I repeatedly interrupted and said “I am asking you not to involve (daughter’s name) in your arguments. I don’t want you tell her she needs to tell her grandpa to do anything…you are putting her in the middle and I do not want that.” It took several times before she finally agreed. She told me to tell my dad she wants her dog back. I told her I would tell him.

Anyway tonight she calls about three hours after my dad brought me back home. (We went out to lunch and he took me to the store so I could pick my medicine and a few groceries.) The first thing she says is “Are you done with the car?” I said yes we’ve been done for a few hours. She says “Where’s my dog?” I told her I didn’t know. “Did you tell him I want my dog?” Yes. She starts flipping out “He stole my dog!” Ect ect…She announced she was going to call the police and report that he stole her dog…I cracked up at the ridiculousness of that (not on purpose it just came out). I tried to explain to her the police could not do anything. They were married, its not like he broke into the house and stole her dog. This was a mistake because it just inflamed her. She went all over the map carrying on about different things he did over the past 55 years they’ve been married. I know these stories, I’ve heard them a million times. Most of them are embellished or completely made up. I know because she makes up imaginary things that I supposedly did that never happened.

So I try to tell her I wish she had someone her own age she talk to about these things but it is hard for me to constantly hear these horrible things about my father. She carries on and cries, "she has no one…"ect. I know I need to get off the phone. I’m trying to find a window to do that. I feel guilty because she really doesn’t have anyone. I start saying prayers in my head to block her out. She is saying so many false things that I know are false horrible things about my dad…and she plays the martyr. I know how horrible she is to him. For years after my sister died (from cancer) she screamed at him that he killed her. She’s called him a Nazi (he’s German), she’s called him horrible, horrible things. She finally pushes the wrong button and I snap…I end up having a screaming match on the phone with my mom. Luckily her phone battery dies and we get disconnected. Thank God.

I’ve told myself over and over to not get sucked in…and I just did it again.😦

You will be in my prayers. It must be so hard to have a mother like this. It seems like continually having to walk through a mine field, not knowing when a mine will explode…I hope you are not too hard on yourself, it sounds like you just stayed on the phone too long until she managed to say the thing that set you off. I used to do this with my son, and he got me every single time. 😦

God bless your father for being a saint to put up with this woman!

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kindgom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliever us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

May the most just, the most loveable, and the most high Will of God be done, be praised, be fulfilled in all things. Amen.

I am terribly sorry you are in this situation and I want to say you are an AWESOME mom for not wanting your daughter caught in the middle and good for you ! However, I seriously doubt that your mom will listen and quit trying to put your daughter in the middle. I don’t know how olds your daughter is but this is a suggestion to think about. Tell your daughter ‘When granny says ‘tell grandpa to do this’ you say ‘I am sorry granny but my mom forbid me from giving grandpa messages from you’ if granny does not immediately stop, hang up the phone. Don’t worry, you will not be punished for what you do’ Just a though

It’s incredible what people will put up with.
If my wife behaved like this I would pack up and leave. These days if a person goes to a psychiatrist and comes away with a diagnosis such as ’ paranoid personality disorder’ its like an excuse to behave badly. ‘I am behaving badly because I am sick’ . Then the family feel guilty because they have to put up with the disgraceful behaviour of their family.

In my opinion tough love is better. ‘Behave or your are out’ is my motto. I have a right to live in peace in my own home. My wife and teenage children understand that I will never put up with this kind of indulgent behaviour. As a result they behave and rarely behave in a disorderly manner.

Too much is made of “family bonds”. Sometimes our families drag us down and prevent us from experiencing peace and happiness. The church is our family. Every adult is a free agent. We are free to leave our homes and families in order to live at peace in the church.

I would have nothing to do with your mother for a while so that she understands that her behaviour is unacceptable. Of course here is my common disclaimer ‘I am not a priest so go and consult your priest’ before acting on advice from someone you do not know on the Internet.

I feel guilty because she really doesn’t have anyone.
This line, really jumped out at me. She believes this to be true–that she doesn’t have anyone. In your post, you mention her husband, her sister, you, and your daughter who all interact wtih her, and presumably love her. She is most definitley not alone–and you need to remind yourself of this when she is in the grip of her paranoid beleifs. And at times, she is by herself when she starts pushing everyone away, but she is not truly alone. Please do not feel guilty for her skewed perception. It means you believe it too when rationally, you know this is not true.

I pray for her continued healing and fewer episodes, and that you are able to repair your relationship with her.

I am praying for you, and I am smiling, because you are obviously a strong, sane woman who sees what is before you. Hope the days ahead go more smoothly, and that you find many blessings in each day that remind you of God’s love for you. 😉

She means she doesn’t have anyone to talk to about her problems. Its not appropriate for her to discuss (scream & cry about) her marital problems to me or my 16 year old daughter. Her sister lives several states away. My mom is 84, her sister is 87.Since my mom believes my dad is her problem, he’s not on the list either. And he tolerates her. He takes her the doctor, to the store ect. She has been cruel to him for decades, I think she killed his love for her. The lady that lived next door to her for the past 34 years was just moved to an assisted living place 1 &1/2 hours away. Her other lady friend died last year. So really she doesn’t have someone to vent to.

She was so vicious to me since I was about 12 until I was able to move out. Sometimes I just think you reap what you sow. But I feel sad that she’s at the end of years and that she’s so miserable.I don’t want anything bad to happen to her but I can’t take the abuse either.

Rayne, I too will be praying for you and the whole situation. Your Dad sounds like a very good man, and you handled the whole situation pretty well, as far as I can see. Don’t beat yourself up…hope you feel strength from the prayers going out for you.

So I haven’t talked to my mom since our fight Saturday.

When I saw my dad Monday he said she was still flipping out. He was back at the house where my mom is. She wouldn’t let him take the dog for a walk. Today my daughter called my dad on his cell phone. She asked if he could bring the dog for a second meeting with our cats. (He brought him in Saturday after we dropped off my car at the shop). We’re slowly letting the cats and dog get familiar. He said he’d have to see and he’d call her back. He called her back and said Grandma is “not feeling well” and she doesn’t want him to take the dog. He said maybe tomorrow. This means my mom is still in her funk. So they’re back to their “normal” routine and I am again in an awkward, uncomfortable position with my mother.

I really feel the time has come where I have to draw a line, a boundary -there has be rules of conduct. Not easy to do with someone with mental disturbance. There were times when I was teen I thought once I was of age I would walk out and never look back. I didn’t do that. As an adult I’ve allowed her to abuse me over and over again -out of guilt, out of a sense of obligation (she has no other living children). I do love her as my mom. When she’s physically ill, I’m right there. She’s terrified of hospitals and I stick by her side and advocate for her.

But I’m just tired of being beaten to death emotionally. And her trapping my daughter on the phone, carrying on the way she does -with my daughter not knowing what to do -it just really made me feel I have to put a stop to it. I realize all these years I could have set a boundary but I’ve chosen not to…I guess it feels “mean”. So I’ve sacrificed myself -over twenty years out of her home -and I still allow it.

So I have to find a time when my mom has calmed down. When we sit down and I lay out the ground rules. I’m going to have to pray intensely because she will try to push every button. I will have to tell her I am no longer available to listen to rant about my father. I will not be a go between and I will no longer listen to it. I will be there if she needs help with her medication, a ride to the doctor, a trip to the mall…whatever -but if at any point it turns into a bashing my dad (or bashing me) fest I will leave. Period. I have to do it.

Now I just need you all to pray for me to have the courage and the inner peace to do it without it blowing up in my face.

May the Lord Jesus Christ provide you and your mother all the graces and strengthes that you are most in need of at this time. Amen.

Mom is 84. Has she had a complete check-up including being tested for dementia? My Mom had a personality disorder that was not labled until she was in her late 80s. The craziness you described is similiar to what I endured. Then she developed Alzheimer’s. This, of course, increased the irrational behavior. The doctor insisted he could take care of the problem…physical and verbal abuse. He did. Even she noticed a difference after taking the meds.

She’s had the same doctor for a decade and she doesn’t like her, always complains but doesn’t change doctors. My mother is a paranoid and scared woman. Her reasons for not changing is doesn’t want to fill out all the paperwork with all her health info first. “Why do they need all that before I even get to see the doctor? What if I don’t like the doctor? Now they have all my information.” Like they would sell it to the FBI? I’ve tried helping her find a new doctor. There’s always excuses -too young, too old, too foreign, the location. She’s extremely weary of any medication. She doesn’t understand that one medicine being lets say 20mg and a different medication being 100mg does not mean the one is more potent than the other. “Well my old medicine was only 25mg the new one is 500mg, its too strong. I think they are trying to kill me.” Two completely different medications. She not filled prescriptions, she’s called back and argued with the doctor, stopped taking them because she imagines all these side effects which are not even on the list of possible side effects. I really have no idea if she’s been checked for dementia. I certainly couldn’t suggest it. I’m sure the doctor gets that my mom is not “right.” I’ve been with her before when she’s been at the doctor. She is a difficult patient.

Of course! And while you don’t know me (or any of us, I suppose) from Adam, please know that you are far from being the only one in this sort of situation.

My recently deceased father referred to his doctor as “Dr. Nutso” in his presence. Every. time.

😊
