Can you suggest some DVD (no Blu-Ray) sets for viewing while I ride my stationary, exercise bike?

Likes
  • The natural world. Scientific exploration. Learning “how things work”. Sci-fi genre. Sometimes history genre. I am open to other genre, though.
  • Intelligent commentary. Witty dialogue. Clever scripts.
  • Big sets, with lots of viewing hours.
Dislikes
  • Nudity and immodesty. Glorification of sexual immorality. Sexual innuendo.
  • Excessive profanity, especially using the Lord’s name in vain.
  • Bawdy or silly humor.
  • In general, glorification of bad behavior.
  • Any of the so-called “reality” programming of the last decade+.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Anna and the King, with Jodie Foster, *Pride and Prejudice *(2005).

Planet Earth
Upstairs Downstairs
I love Frasier, but you may find it to risqué in its script at times.

National Geographic videos. The ones I’ve seen are quite good. The topics are all over the place; history, natural science, astronomy, and more thank I can think of at the moment.

The Robe, Pride and Prejudice, The King’s Speech (never watched it, but I heard it was really good).

The 2013/4 dvd set for “the Bible”
Little House on the Prairie
Touched by an Angel
The Waltons
The Andy Griffiths Show

“The King’s Speech” has song strong language, but if one can get past that, it’s a good film.

I very much appreciate the suggestion thus far. I am primarily interested in purchasing, probably used through ebay, multi-episode sets as opposed to individual movies. I spend a lot of time on my exercise bike, and I will go through individual movies far too fast. I ride 4-6x per week, long enough to get through one episode of an “hour-long” TV program every ride.

I came across the “Emily of New Moon” Canadian TV adaption series at a grocery store, of all places. They weren’t expensive at all, and each DVD has hours and hours worth of episodes. They’re faith friendly and even Catholic friendly, with one episode in particular portraying the local priest very positively, despite Emily’s relatives’ strong prejudices. I adore them—I wish the series was longer!

Emily of New Moon was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, of Anne of Green Gables fame. “Emily” has many similarities—spunky, quirky girls, ultimately sympathetic portrayals of the girls’ relatives, historic settings, gorgeous scenery, great story telling.

On a different note, Michael Palin of Monty Python did a fascinating series of travelogues, all over the world–beautiful, informative, and funny at times, not at all dry.

You can’t go wrong with pictures from Hallmark.

Watched one last night with Rickey Schroder and daughter. It is a western set in modern times. But I like westerns.

Mr. Schroder has changed a lot since Lonesome Dove. Another family friendly western originally a mini series that takes a long time to watch. And there are also the follow ups to Lonesome Dove.

Since u say u are open to other genres, then how about Cadfael (which is like a mystery series)? From what I’ve seen of it, I really liked it, especially since it has a Benedictine monk as a main character. 🙂 I’ve seen the whole DVD set (13 episodes ~ about 75 minutes each) for about $40-$50 on Ebay.

Would you consider “The Bible” mini-series educational or merely entertaining? If the presentation is relatively orthodox, I will probably pick it up.

I will ponder The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. I remember them fondly from my youth, but worry they would not hold my interest now. I have encountered that with much of the tv programming I watched as a child, such as Magnum PI, Kung Fu, Rockford Files, and others. Will see what is available cheap on ebay.

I hear you. if that is your concern, I would look more toward the documentaries.
PSB, National Geographic, the BBC, all have great ones.

I will spend some time researching the suggestions.

There is much National Geographic programming available on ebay. This is good. Maybe I can pick up some huge sets cheap. It would be nice to get 200-300 - 42-50 minute episodes of new (to me) material so I will be able to go another year before beginning to re-watch material or buy more.

Sign up for Netflix or a similar service. They have a pretty good selection of nature, National Geographic, and TV series. It’s a few bucks a month, but you can select what you want and cancel it when you have watched everything of interest. They will send DVD’s or you can choose to watch streaming video.

If you like mysteries you can watch Hercule Poirot series starring David Suchet. The episodes from 89-96 are the best ones. You can find them on Netflix. You can also watch the Columbo series, the ones from the 1970’s. That’s good too.

The Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett is good as well. The early ones have really good acting in them.

I still reference this thread and scour ebay for good deals on some of the suggestions.

I just finished Lonesome Dove. Wow! Great suggestion. Probably the most entertaining fictional, TV programming I have ever viewed. Should have taken 8 cardio sessions to get through it, but my willpower wilted a bit and I think I only got 5 or 6 sessions out of it. 😊
