With respect to Indulgences, one condition to be met for the Plenary Indulgence is
  • complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
    What exactly does this mean?
Another condition is to pray for the Pope’s intentions.
Does this mean to pray for
A) his monthly intention, and
B) his urgent intentions posted on the Vatican website.

Thanks.

These questions will come up in regards to the monthly Our Lady of Fatima Celebrations. They start on May 13. So easily understood answers appreciated, that can be explained in a flyer if needed.

I understand the Indulgence can be applied to ourselves or the dead. Is there anything special needed to be said if the Indulgence is to be for the dead?

🙏

Detachment from sin, even venial, means that there is no intention to continue comitting venial sins, due to liking it (attachment): no sins remain which the soul is unwilling to renounce.

According to the Manual of Indulgences which is the official publication from the Church concerning indulgences, prayer for the intention of the Holy Father ‘is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, one has the option of reciting any other prayer according to individual piety and devotion, if recited for this intention’ (N20 / 5). The condition about prayer for the intention of the Holy Father doesn’t mention anything about his monthly intention or his urgent intentions as posted on the Vatican website. The norm simply says ‘prayer for the intention of the Holy Father.’ So, if one was to say one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intention/s of the Holy Father without specifying anything else about the intention of the Holy Father this should satisfy the obligation of praying for the intention of the Holy Father, and this is what I do. I normally recite one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intention of the Holy Father without thinking about directing this intention to his monthly intention or other urgent intentions, but I direct it to just simply the Holy Father’s intention whatever this or these may be because the norm about praying for the Holy Father’s intention doesn’t specify his monthly intention or other urgent intentions but it simply says his intention.

I think if you want to apply an indulgence to the souls in purgatory rather than yourself, then you should have this intention such as saying ‘I offer this indulgence or work for the souls in purgatory or some particular soul who may be in purgatory.’ One can do this with a simply thought of the mind without even saying vocal words. There is no ‘formal’ prayer one needs to recite to apply an indulgence to the dead.

If one has made an act of total consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, then one does not even worry about whether applying indulgences to oneself or the souls in purgatory because this soul has voluntarily given all its meritorious acts, works, and indulgences to the Blessed Virgin and she applies them herself to where it is most needed whether that concerns oneself or some soul or souls in purgatory. One could still offer some indulgence for some soul or souls in purgatory but the person totally consecrated to Mary actually leaves it in Mary’s hands to apply it where she sees it most fitting.
