According to a papal decree, Pope Benedict XVI will grant the faithful a Plenary Indulgence on Ash Wednesday of this year under the following conditions: Performing the Stations of the Cross. Devout meditation on the Passion of the Lord must be undertaken. Movement from one station to the next is required. The stations must be lawfully erected (not sure what that means). The usual conditions of Sacramental Confession, Communion, prayer for the Pope and complete removal from any form of sin and attachment to sin also apply.

“The stations must be lawfully erected”

There are certain requirements in number and the events depicted and they must have a wooden cross on or near each station.

I thought you could gain a plenary indulgence for praying the stations of the Cross in a Church any time of year - was I wrong on this?

I don’t know about a plenary indulgence praying the stations in a Church, but not all stations are in churches. I have been to several shrines that have the stations outside in a plaza or in a garden.

I believe that you are correct about that – just posted what was handed out in church yesterday.

Thank you for posting this. It helped to remind me to go to Confession today.🙂

The Handbook of Indulgences states that the Stations are eligible for a plenary indulgence given 7 conditions of how they are done. To summarize (you can probably find on the internet) it seems to require 14 stations, with at least some people moving to each station, and some other conditions that seem to me typical of a church.
