Also, if you’re going to a devotion service today and intend to go to confession, plan on going early. From what I’ve experienced, the lines are long at the services today.
I wasn’t expecting a long line at confession yesterday, since it’s only one week after Easter Sunday, butAlso, if you’re going to a devotion service today and intend to go to confession, plan on going early. From what I’ve experienced, the lines are long at the services today.
Thanks for the link.As far as I know, all plenary indulgences have the condition that one have no attachment to sin. I don’t think that we can know with certainty that we have no attachment to sin, but we fulfill all the rest of the conditions of the indulgence. God will judge and, if we have attachment to sin, we will only receive a partial indulgence. That is still a very good thing.
Here is a post by Fr. Z on the question: wdtprs.com/blog/2011/10/quaeritur-attachment-to-sin-indulgences-and-you/
It is about 20 days, either before or after the performance of the indulgenced act(s). (And must be in the state of grace to receive the indulgence.)Our pastor said, yesterday, at Mass that we had/have 20 days to get to Confession to fulfill that part of the requirement. During Mass, he conducted a service to venerate the image of Jesus. And he had previously arranged/scheduled a parish penance service so that everyone who attended automatically satisfied the requirements for both the papal blessing plenary indulgence AND the Divine Mercy Sunday plenary indulgence.
Maybe you all can discuss with your pastor so that the next time some similar opportunity for a plenary indulgence comes along, he can schedule things accordingly.
Attachment to sin probably means an addiction to a sin for Christ said, even a just man sins seven times a day. Attachment to sin may be: knowingly violating the just laws of man everyday, going out after work on fridays getting overly drunk with your friends each week, being a christian around your church friends, but not keeping a christian attitude with your non chruch friends in conversation or otherwise just to fit in or whatever. Addiction or the unwillingness to stop, drugs, alcohol and purverse practices is more likely what attachment to sin means.Another forum member reminded me that this coming Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday, upon which I might gain a plenary indulgence.
My question is, how do I know that I am not attached to any sin, even a venial sin? I can state that firmly with my mouth, but how do I really KNOW that I am not secretly desiring of some aspect of my sins? This seems like an impossible feat to me. I would LIKE to be unattached to sin; I STRIVE to be unattached to sin, but I fear that I am still attached to sin, since I keep on sinning.
Do I just fulfill the other aspects of the indulgence and trust that if I state out loud that I am unattached, that I am??
Mystified. I want to know how anyone gains this plenary indulgence. Help.
Every turning from God through lack of charity or vanity is an unhealthy attachment to creatures, and brings a need to break that attachment. Since it is not eternal it can be overcome in time through works of mercy and charity, prayer, and penitential practices, thus putting on the “new man”.Attachment to sin probably means an addiction to a sin for Christ said, even a just man sins seven times a day. Just my thoughts.
What you say is absolutely true. However, attachment to sin as used in this thread most likely means continuing in sin without remorse and proper confession. No one can reach a state of substained sinlessness in this life without the devine graces of God. You can probably count on your fingers the people throughout history that pocessed the graces from God to live in a state of sinlessness.Every turning from God through lack of charity or vanity is an unhealthy attachment to creatures, and brings a need to break that attachment. Certainly there is no hope of obtaining mercy while “continuing in sin without remorse and proper confession”. This surely does include attachment. What you describe is lack of contrition for sin. It is sufficient for mercy to have the imperfect contrition called attrition, which includes the will not to sin (the mortal sin) and does not require the perfect love of God. Attachments, which are emotional dependence on a person or on a real or illusory object, may still remain. What you say is absolutely true. Yes, the past can be overcome. But, the future and our sins to come are still before us. That’s why I pointed out Christ’s words “Even the just man sins seven times a day.” Scripture also says something to the fact; we are born in sin and we will die in sin, but by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we can be saved.
These words in the prior paragraph are why I believe attachment to sin in this since means to committ sin with the desire to do so. To sin with no remorse; because, you enjoy the sin you are partaking in. And, to not confess your sin because you enjoy your sin over self sacrafice and the love of God.
Christ is the Divine Mercy. If you do not sin, you do not need Christ’s Mercy. So, thinking that just because there is sin in your life you may not partake in the Indulgence of the Divine Mercy is simply the spiritual workings of anti-christ.
Jesus, I trust in you.
