Can one obtain a plenary indulgence for the Poor Souls in the Purgatory when at the time of devotion the mortal sin has not yet happened?

For example, when one said 5 decades of Rosary in front of the Tabernacle but then sinned immediately afterwards, and went to Confession and Holy Communion on the next day, would there still be a plenary indulgence?

Not sure if this thread should belong to the Apologetics forum…

Plenary indulgences are not applicable to the Poor Souls. If a particular devotion is offered for them, it will be “partial” according to how God will apply it to them. One exception, that I absolutely treasure and am devoted to, is the following grant of the Church:
A Plenary Indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who,
  1. on any and each day from November 1 to 8, devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, if only mentally, for the departed;
  2. on All Souls’ Day (or, according to the judgment of the Ordinary, on the Sunday preceding or following it, or on the solemnity of All Saints), devoutly visit a church or an oratory and recite and Our Father and the Creed.
I think it is assumed that the usual conditions apply, that one will go to confession within 20 days before or after performing the work, receive communion on the day the work is performed, offer prayers for the Pope, and … (important!) have no attachment to sin (mortal or venial).

You’re very welcome, Clare. Yes, we can plan to do offer these plenaries in just a couple week, huh?
I’ve done this for a few years now, and as I have gone every day of the 8 days allowed in November x 3 years, I believe I have helped to rescue everyone in my family by now. 😃 I don’t know anyone left to pray for, so just ask God to apply it to that soul who is most in need of His mercy.

LOL. How about Sister Winifred Keyes?
She taught me piano all those years ago…😉

I may need to add to my post where I stated that the only time one may obtain a plenary indulgence for the souls in purgatory is from Nov. 1-8, as per the Manual of Indulgences published by the USCCB.

Fr. Andrew Apostoli stated tonight on EWTN’s Prime Time that we may obtain a plenary for one soul in purgatory daily! That is news to me, but I believe he is being truthful. I just wish I could see it in the Manual to verify it’s authenticity. It is understood that the usual conditions apply. If anyone wants to view this, perhaps in a day or two, EWTN will upload the program to YouTube/ewtn.

Yup, I also read before that plenary indulgences can be applied to one Holy Soul in Purgatory per day by way of suffrage
