Plenary Indulgence

Hello everyone!

I want to receive a plenary indulgence (im going to pray the rosary in a church) but the way my schedule worked i had to go to confession today and can not receive communion till tomorrow. Is that to long for me to receive the indulgence?

I don’t know if this helps but, I hope it does because I was unaware a full plenary indulgence could be earned saying the rosary in a church:

To be capable of gaining indulgences, a person must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least at the end of the prescribed works. To gain indulgences, however, a capable subject must have at least the general intention of acquiring them and must fulfill the enjoined works in the established time and the proper method, according to the tenor of the grant. (CIC 996 §1-2)

I’m pretty sure you have to recieve communion the same day that you do the act. But a confession as far back as 8 days will suffice. So long as you remain in a state of grace. I like to attend the latin mass in my city. They have confession, then a public rosary, then mass.

My old Baltimore Catechism says that confession may be on the day of the work, or on the eight days the preceding or following the work. Communion may be received on the day of the work, the preceding day, or the eight days following the work.

I don’t think that is how it is anymore. Communion must be received on the same day.

Im so jealous! im dying for a daily latin mass i can only go on sundays. And thats perfect because i plan on praying my rosary before mass.

You need to look at the requirements for a plenary indulgence saying a public rosary, it has to be said out loud, and the mysteries have to be anounced. Check the Catholic churches in your area and see if any of them have a public rosary time already on schedule. Our Latin mass is daily but the one that has the public rosary is the Sunday Mass. Also at the end of the rosary they automatically say 1 our father, 1 hail mary, and 1 glory be for the holy fathers intentions. BOOM!! all the requirements for a plenary indulgence. Anytime I want to obtain a plenary indulgence this is usually what I do. Or read the bible for 1/2 hour the day I take communion.

There is an authoritative statement *-- given in Rome at the offices of the Apostolic Penitentiary, 29 January 2000 – which says “several days (about 20) before or after”:4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace:
— have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin;
— have sacramentally confessed *their sins;
— receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required);
— pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.

1. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope’s intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope’s intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an “Our Father” and a “Hail Mary” are suggested.
