According to a papal decree, Pope Benedict XVI will grant the faithful a Plenary Indulgence on the Fridays of Lent to those that recite the “En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu” (see below) after reception of Communion before an image of the crucified Christ (picture or statue). The decree is signed by Cardinal James Francis Stafford and Fr. John Francis Girotti, O.F.M. Conv., respectively penitentiary major and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary. The usual conditions of sacramental confession. prayer for the Pope and completely removed from any form of sin and attachment to sin apply.
En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu (Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus)
Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before your face I humbly kneel, and with burning soul pray and beseech you to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment, while I contemplate with great love and tender pity your five wounds, pondering over them within me, calling to mind the words which David, your prophet, said of you, my good Jesus: “They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones”

I’d thought it was standard to have a plenary indulgence available for Look down upon me good and gentle Jesus. I’ve done it before myself in Lent on Friday. It is partial the rest of the year.

???

After all these years of being Catholic I’m still a little confused about plenary indulgences. I know the conditions - confession, communion, prayer for the Pope plus the indulgenced prayer or act and lack of attachment to sin.

If you do several indulgenced prayers/acts betwen confessions, though, are they all covered or do you have to go to confession separately for each indulgence you are trying to obtain?

Lily,

One trip to confession suffices for them all. It just has to be within a reasonable amount of time. I do a week.

Wow, thanks for the quick response Pug. I go to Confession every week anyway, and I was doing a couple of different prayers knowing that I could at least get a partial indulgence. :angel1:

Not that that was my sole reason of course 😛

Don’t know. Just sharing what was passed out in church.

Many Churches (like mine) also have stations of the Cross on EVERY Friday in Lent, which is also a plenary indulgence candidate (usual conditions apply).

Boy this is good to know. I collect plenary indulgences and give them to Mary to distribute as she sees fit!
