My Brothers and Sisters:

Our Pastor at St. Marys has asked us to join together in 40 Days of Prayer from the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior to the Feast of the Holy Cross (August 6 - September 14). I’ve decided to extend that to all of those who may feel a need to [ray for their parishes and invite all of the members of Catholic Answers to spend time in prayer for their parishes and dioceses during these 40 Days.

As was handed out on Sunday and emailed so I could post here:

**FORTY DAYS OF PRAYER
Saint Mary of the Angels Parish
August 6 – September 14
Transfiguration – Holy Cross Day

Let us pray for God’s Vision for our parish, that we may be readied to receive all that He has for us, with most grateful hearts & voices.
Let us give Him all the glory for what He has done among us already, for all that He is now doing, & anticipating what He will do, giving thanks for what is yet to come from His Hand.

Let us pray that all harmony in the Holy Spirit may sound forth among us to God’s glory.
Let us pray to discern God’s gifts in each other, & praise God for them.
Let us pray that all obstructions to God’s work within us may be removed.

Let us pray that this Parish may exhibit the four Marks of the Christ’s True Church:
One (Days 1, 5, 9 …), Holy (Days 2, 6, 10 …), Catholic (Day 3, 7, 11, …) & Apostolic (Day 4, 8, 12 …).

During these days, meditate on these Marks, asking God to show how we, individually & corporately, can manifest them.

Let us pray for courage & all other virtues, & provision to accomplish His Will in this parish and elsewhere.

Daily Collect for our Parish

*Almighty and everlasting God, Who dost govern all things in heaven and earth, mercifully hear our prayers, & grant unto this parish of (1) Saint Mary of the Angels all things needful for its spiritual & temporal welfare; & especially we commend today to Thy loving kindness *(List the Names of people you are concerned about or who have died).

*We pray that Thou wouldest enlighten & guide Benedict our Pope, *(2) *John our Primate, George our Metropolitan, Daren our Bishop, & the clergy of this Parish, John & Erik, Deacons; Beau & Christopher, priests; strengthen & increase the faithful; visit & relieve the sick; turn & soften the wicked; arouse the careless; recover the fallen; restore the penitent; remove all hindrances to the advancement of Thy Truth; & bring us all to be of one heart & one mind within the fold of Thy Holy Church; to the honor & glory of Thy blessed Name; through JESUS Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, One God, in glory everlasting. *

(2) List the Names of your own (Patriarchs, Metropolitans - Eastern Catholics & Orthodox) Archbishops, Bishops, Priests and Deacons.

If you have the time, please pray that St. Marys grows in size, wisdom and in the knowledge of the grace and the saving power and love of God. Please also pray that Rome’s response to the TAC’s request for union would be positive and that, if it is, the people of St. Marys, and of the TAC, would be able to say, “Yes” back and to faithfully “cross the Tiber” with peace and joy.

I pray for all the parishes I attend St Isidore the farmers Catholic Church, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, St Marys Catholic Church. Also St. Anthony’s Of Padua. May God Bless all the Catholic Churches, May He send His Holy Spirit down to all the Priest, So that they may continue to do His Holy Will Amen
 
Thank you, I will join in 40 days of prayer. Mine is a vibrant parish but everyone has need of prayer.

May God be with all the Christians in our parishes, and in those whom God has placed to lead us.
Heavenly Father, please flood our parishes with the wisdom, truth, and love of Your Holy Spirit.

Here’s an article I found - I’m not sure if I agree with all of it, but I do agree with the major spiritual principles:

The Call - Fasting for Breakthroughs

I believe that there is a greater spiritual significance to the extended 40-day fast than what we have yet realized. If the bitterest battles we fight are against temptation and the devil, then extended fasting is the atomic weapon in our arsenal. Jesus prepared himself to overcome the intense temptations of Satan by going on a 40-day fast. Elijah’s experience with the 40-day fast is a clear example of this as well. He had just witnessed one of the most dramatic demonstrations of God’s power, yet despite this incredible victory on Mount Carmel, Jezebel was still alive and dominating the land. Imagine being discouraged after seeing supernatural fire blaze down on your sacrifice. Talk about an altar call! Furious about the death of her prophets and under the possession of the spirit of Ashtoreth, Jezebel vowed to kill Elijah, who in turn ran for his life. The angel of the Lord found Elijah on the verge of collapse and under the spirit of suicide. This was no weak or ordinary spell.

The spell of Jezebel often comes upon a man or a woman and, in particular, leaders with the spirit of adultery. It seduces even the bondservants into sexual immorality. In the face of this demonic spell, the Lord initiates a 40-day fast and leads his broken servant to a place of cleansing, repentance and new commissioning. Elijah returned to the same place where Moses generations before had fulfilled his own 40-day fast. I believe Elijah’s 40-day fast was a mighty act of spiritual warfare against Jezebel’s sorceries and brought him back to a place where he could reclaim covenant mercies for himself and the nation. I believe the 40-day fast can be the channel though which the Holy Spirit can cleanse us from tormenting thoughts, demonically inspired addictions, as well as heal us of (some?) chronic diseases*.

*No sooner had she finished, then the Lord quickened my spirit and said, “I am going to show you a secret vulnerability in Satan’s kingdom.” His weakness is in the flies. Later that day, we went to the Carmel public library and looked up the word fly. I discovered the meaning of Beelzebub, and found one of the names of Satan is “Lord of the Flies.” Scientists have discovered that flies have a reproductive period from 4 hours to 40 days depending upon the species. When pest controllers go to eradicate flies in a certain area, they spray pesticides everyday for a 40-day period. If they destroy the reproductive cycles of presently existing flies, they can kill off a whole generation of future flies. I then saw what God was trying to show me. Satan can’t fight for long periods. If a Christian will pray consistently for a 40-day period, he will be able to conquer most satanic strongholds in his life. *

That’s why LENT is 40 Days, EASTER is 40 Days, and Advent was 6 weeks from the 6th Century until the Renaissance (the Christmas Season started during the Christmas Vigil and lasted 12 days from Dec. 25 - Jan. 6).

A brief Note from St. Paul the Apostle on Unity:*I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love,
**eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. *

*There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. *

Please pray this prayer on the Days for UNITY (1, 5, 9, 13, 17…). I think you’ll prefer the poetry of this ancient form to the one in the “New Mass”.

Thank you for keeping this in the Forum’s eye.

The aspect of HOLY is a little harder to capture, because Holy doesn’t as much mean righteous as “Set apart to/for God”. We like to think that the ones who are set apart for God are the religious brothers and sisters and those in the Major Orders of Bishop, Priest & Deacon. That’s not true - The word for Church in New Testament, Eklesia, means “Those who have been called out/forth”. According to the word for Church, we are all called out from the world and to God:
*“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” *
Exodus 19:5,6 ESV
That is what Moses said to the Nation of Israel in the Sinai. The Church Fathers often referred to the Church as the New Israel.

To confirm that, here is what St. Peter had to say:
*Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, “The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner,” and “A stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall”; for they stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.*

My Brothers and Sisters:

Please add the mission parish, St. Barnabas, of a priest friend of mine, Fr. Scott, to this 40-Days of Prayer. Fr. Scott sent an email explaining that his small mission parish hasn’t really grown in the 3 years since it was started. He’s having even greater problems with attendance during summer than usual, and this is really bothering him.

We all know churches either grow or die. So, I’m asking you to pray that Fr. Scott would be encouraged and refreshed by the Holy Spirit, that St. Barnabas would be renewed and revived by the Holy Spirit and that, as a result, St. Barnabas would grow spiritually and numerically.

Catholic - Kata Holos - “Of or pertaining to the whole”. St. Augustine said the Catholic Faith was that Faith taught to all men in all places at all times, and both St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Polycarp of Smyna referred to the Eklesia as “The Catholic Church”, as does The Apostles Creed which dates from the 2nd Century…
"You must follow the bishop as Jesus Christ follows the Father, and the presbytery as you would the Apostles. Reverence the deacons as you would the command of God. Let no one do anything of concern to the Church without the bishop. Let that be considered a valid Eucharist which is celebrated by the bishop, or by one whom he appoints. Wherever the bishop appears, let the people be there, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."

Part of the faith is the belief in the Primacy and Authority of Peter:

Father John Corapi likes to say, NO Priest, NO Eucharist. NO Eucharist, NO Church - The problem is that he’s right!

Because of that, please pray (1) That the Authority of the Pope would be accepted by those in Authority and by those teaching others in Catholic parishes, schools and universities; (2) that men and women would hear and heed the call to become priests and religious, (3) that seminaries and “Vocations Counselors” would enable them to fulfill their vocations rather than become cemeteries for those vocations as they have been far too often in the past 40 years; (4) that there would be a renewal in reverence and awe for our Lord in the Holy Sacrament - That HE would be relocated to the front of the Church where he belongs; (6) That more people would not forsake the assembly of the Brethren but would come, reconciled to the Lord and to each other, eager to worship the Lord in the beauty of Holiness; and (7) That we Catholics would unite with our persecuted brothers and sisters in countries such as Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan and Vietnam and that their suffering would cause a wave conversion in our churches and a turning to the Lord, His Church, His Word and His Sacraments.

And, Finally (8) that as this revival and renewal occurs, the Holy Spirit would fall on us, and we would become His witness in our families, businesses, schools, and social circles, to the dispossessed and unwanted in our communities, towns and cities and to the world at large.

Rebuild Your Church
Jesus, send Your Holy Spirit to renew Your Church through grace and human labour. Inspire an escalating influx of authentic vocations to priestly, religious and lay apostolates. Protect and build up Your Church through mutual love, so that the gospel is witnessed and received amongst our families, our communities, and our world.

Overcome in us that decline of worship and service into token observance, religiosity or neglect and flood Your Church with Your Holy Spirit.

We have clung to materialism, sensuality and ease, therefore punish ourselves by their tenacious hold upon our lives. This strangles peace of soul and impoverishes human relationships, fostering discord and injustice amongst us. Please send the Holy Spirit to inspire us with faith and mutual charity.

We have clung to our own will and preferences, thus punish ourselves by inability to rise above our limited selves into the freedom of Your love. We choose worldliness—even many of us who are consecrated to You—rather than to commit ourselves to Your love with unconditional trust.

Liberate us from imbalance regarding human appetites so that we respond to relationship with gospel love. Overcome in us the influence of immoral and unchristian values normalised by convenience, by custom, by literature and by media.

Let us recognise our true relation to You and to each other as children of God. Thus, imbue us with reverence towards the sacredness of human life from conception to enfeebled old age, for we live in a society corrupted by accepted forms of injustice and murder.

Let Christ’s forgiveness, healing and peace flow through us. Rescue us from our apathy, agnosticism and atheism and from our search for instant miracle where You desire patient trust. Convert those who live religiously but without genuine faith. To those who do believe, grant deepening faith that leads us into generous commitment and loving service.

Allow Your Holy Spirit to purify and strengthen us in love, faith, hope, in justice and harmony, granting us true conversion within Your Mystical Body. Thank You for Your gift of each other in Church, our God.

Spirit of divine Love, empower us in the Church and in our parishes

Holy Spirit, You proceed uncreated from Father and Son, as their eternal Love. Spirit of Love please flood us with God’s love, for Saint Paul assures us that “The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.” [Romans 5:5]

Through Baptism and Confirmation, You empower us as messengers of God’s word. Through You, the living Word of God flows out from the Church to the world. The word proclaimed in the liturgy before the worshipping assembly of the Church, disseminates through Your power. You, who spoke through the prophets, please continue to speak God’s word in our lives.

Through You, we receive faith that empowers us to fulfil God’s law of love. Give us trust, hope and wisdom that enable Your love to permeate our lives.

Give us grace to accept Your inspiration and guidance in the Church, for You use Scripture, the Sacraments, and the teachings and precepts of the Church to instruct, enlighten, and encourage, to admonish and guide us.

With Spirit-filled discussion and reflection, please deepen our insight of truth in tradition, faith and morals. Your ministers are successors to the apostles and prophets. Please keep them faithful to gospel truth.

One (Days 1, 5, 9 …), Holy (Days 2, 6, 10 …), Catholic (Day 3, 7, 11, …) & Apostolic (Day 4, 8, 12 …). During these days, meditate on these Marks, asking God to show how we, individually & corporately, can manifest them.*

Let us pray for courage & all other virtues, & provision to accomplish His Will in this parish and elsewhere.
Almighty and everlasting God, Who dost govern all things in heaven and earth, mercifully hear our prayers, & grant unto our parishes all things needful for its spiritual & temporal welfare; & especially we commend today to Thy loving kindness (List the Names of people you are concerned about or who have died).

We pray that Thou wouldest enlighten our leaders and priests; strengthen & increase the faithful; visit & relieve the sick; turn & soften the wicked; arouse the careless; recover the fallen; restore the penitent; remove all hindrances to the advancement of Thy Truth; & bring us all to be of one heart & one mind within the fold of Thy Holy Church; to the honor & glory of Thy blessed Name; through JESUS Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, One God, in glory everlasting.

Father, in the name of Jesus we pray that You will send Your Holy Spirit to inspire, guide, protect, and empower our paishes with gospel love, truth, and action. Amen
