Cardinal Edouard Gagnon acted as a peritus during the closing phase of the second Vatican Council. His Obituary (cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=53133), says that He resigned his Vatican assignment in 1990. So he must have been at the Vatican.

I was told that the original letter is at The Basilica of the Annunciation in Florence, where Maria Valtorta is buried under the Altar. Bishop Roman Danylak has a copy, He had it on His website: HeartOfJesus.ca. He is in poor heath now, and His site just recently went down.
When I said he wasn’t in Rome, I meant in the years that the audience took place.
In 1941 he was sent to study Canon Law at Laval in Quebec City and in three years obtained his doctorate. He returned to Montreal in 1944. He taught moral theology and canon law for ten years at the Grand Seminary.
From 1954 to 1960 he was Seminary President at St. Boniface, Manitoba.
I do not see that he served in Rome at this time.

Initially, the basic information shows that Cardinal Edouard Gagnon may be one of the most qualified Cardinals to make that kind of a judgment. He was the “Peritus” during the second Vatican Council, that is the Expert Theologian Advisor and Consultant. He had a Doctorate in Theology and taught Canon law for ten years at the Grand Seminary. Exceedingly qualified to ascertain if the Papal Imprimatur and Papal Order to Publish was truly valid.

“Indeed, no less a personage than Edouard Cardinal Gagnon, writing to the Maria Valtorta Research Center from the Vatican on October 31, 1987, referred to Pope Pius XII’s action as: “the kind of official Imprimatur granted before witnesses by the Holy Father in 1948.” “The Valtorta Newsletter (Box 492, Sherbrooke, Ouebec, Canada, JIH 5K2), no.6, Winter, 1992, p.4. The word chosen by Pope Pius XII was actually “Pubblicate,” an imperative form, stronger than “Imprimatur”.”

His Obituary says that He resigned his Vatican assignment in 1990, so he was at the Vatican in the proper time frame. It is to my understanding, that the fundamental nature of the events is; that while Cardinal Gagnon was at the Vatican, Father Andrew Cecchin presented Him with the Priests sworn testimonies and was asked to compare them with the undisclosed Vatican Records. After reviewing the minutes, He wrote the letter to the Maria Valtorta Research Center.

Afterwards, Cardinal Gagnon became a Maria Valtorta enthusiast, and became an editor for a Valtorta site:

Endorsement of Edouard Cardinal Gagnon:

I strongly encourage all my brother Bishops, Priests, Theologians, and the faithful the world over to welcome the Mother of All Peoples Mother Bi-Monthly Marian Internet Magazine into their homes and into their hearts (cf. Jn. 19:27). It is profoundly Marian, and at the same time fully Orthodox and ecumenical within the proper understanding given by the Second Vatican Council (cf. Lumen Gentium 60, 62, 66, 67).

Fill your minds and hearts with the whole and generous truth about Our Lady as presented in this magazine. It will only increase your love for Jesus and His Most Sacred Heart, precisely through the Immaculate Heart of His Mother and your Mother.

Edouard Cardinal Gagnon, P.s.s.
President Emeritus, Pontifical Council for the Family
President Emeritus, Pontifical Committee For International Eucharistic Congress

I misunderstood your claim about the Cardinal. I thought you were claiming he witnessed the audience with the Pope.

“I

Considering that this cannot be checked out, it disqualifies it as being valid.

I thought there were no records? If you are saying that their audience was confirmed that was done through the archives of the paper.
Despite all this it does not make it anymore than fiction according to the Church.

I discussed this a few years back in email communications with one of the monks operating one of the Valtorta websites, who personally spoke with Father Cecchin. Apparently there are meeting minutes for all Papal audiences, which are not public knowledge and at some point get archived.

Moreover, you brought up a significant point, since Bishop Roman’s site is down, one of the Valtorta sites should get this back up again.

I’m making a little headway, it seems that a fellow in Canada has a copy of the Gagnon letter. I was able to call him, but he only speaks French. I may be able to get someone to help with this impasse. If I have any luck, I’ll forward a copy to a Valtorta site that can post it.

Popes read her works and learn from it.

Her works are sold in the Vatican bookstore. Go look for yourself.
Take plane and a cab and look. Because that’s what it takes for you to Believe!. Poor woman!

There is a big difference between what Man Writes and What God dictates to Man. This is called, Revelation from God to Man.

How did God speak to Adam and Eve? Did He, God, say Ok, here’s a big lesson write down all My Words, How I created the Universe. No, He Infused into them through His Breath, The Holy Spirit.

It’s hard for you to imagine that the First Man and Woman who were pure, perfect didn’t need Parchments and Stencils to remember what God told them. They remembered with their Souls, the Intelligent being is the Soul, the brain is just a storage pod. The Soul is what gives man life. No soul No life. Without a soul man would be the same as an animal and at times we see man is an animal through barbaric violent tendencies. His soul has been lost to the demon.

When you eat from the wrong tree you don’t get any light.
When you eat from the correct tree you get tons of light.

Adam and Eve chose to eat from the wrong Tree and they lost the Light, Grace was bye bye. God closed Paradise where the Tree of Life was planted. The Fruit of Tree of Life is Jesus. I am the True Bread of Heaven. I am The Vine you are the Branches.

Genesis 3: 22 And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. 23 And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken. 24 And he cast out Adam; and placed before the paradise of pleasure Cherubims, and a flaming sword, turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Now how can Jesus be the Fruit? In the same way He is Bread and Wine, transubstantiation. God can do anything!

You have the wrong science. The one that connects the dots by some order. In fact you’re still trying to find out if God, Jesus is real? That’s what I hear from your spirit.

God is Spirit; My Words are Spirit and they are Life. His Science is Grace, Life in the Spirit, it sees beyond the four walls it saw so far as to Create the Universe and Angels and Man and all the intricacies within each creation. That we puzzle at. But! Adam and Eve were taught and shown all of Creation accept for the Creation of Man. How nice to know this. Only in Poem can you find such answers. It certainly is not in the Bible, it certainly is not known to the doctors and even the wisest of the Church, but to a simple humble woman who desired to Know Everything, because hers was an honest desire which God granted and blessed those who read! Abundantly! Beyond anyone’s imagination or desires!

Sorry to say but you’re the Red Herring here! way out in no man’s land. You have no backing to what you say. As I read your posted stuff, you keep backing yourself into a hole with no foundation, it crumbles at every stroke of your type. Because A skeptic and detractor never accomplishes her own freedom. She only stays hostage to her skepticisms. Never understanding that within lies the power to Know the Truth. The Soul is the Way to God. It knows God, you just haven’t figured out how to listen to it.
Because, of your other senses which talk very loud. these senses are the Flesh! They are what get people into trouble.

Feelings and affections tuned properly know what is right and what is wrong. Good and Evil. A skeptical persons feelings and affections are always up and down, never peaceful, no calm.
God dwells in Peace. Very simple, when there is no peace there is Chaos. And Feelings which are not tuned by the Spirit, reject the Spirit and thus never able to come to terms with the Reality of Revelations which is available to every Soul God Creates from Heaven.

In fact Maria knows more than Anyone in History, because Jesus and Mary gave her these visions to Dictate. Unfortunately for you, you will never know, because A skeptic who is hiding behind her very well parched wall will never know the True God until she crucifies her flesh and mentality to elevate and rise in her spirit. Then, you will surpass your expectations, because God is not with those who have no Faith to believe in His Words to take Action.

1 Now faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not. 2 For by this the ancients obtained a testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the world was framed by the word of God; that from invisible things visible things might be made.

1 If I must glory (it is not expedient indeed), but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ above fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I know not, or out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man (whether in the body, or out of the body, I know not: God knoweth), 4 That he was caught up into paradise, and heard secret words, which it is not granted to man to utter. 5 For such an one I will glory; but for myself I will glory nothing, but in my infirmities.

6 For though I should have a mind to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I will say the truth. But I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth in me, or any thing he heareth from me. 7 And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me, there was given me a sting of my flesh, an angel of Satan, to buffet me. 8 For which thing thrice I besought the Lord, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said to me: My grace is sufficient for thee; for power is made perfect in infirmity. Gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 For which cause I please myself in my infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ. For when I am weak, then am I powerful.

Maria was bed ridden from a terrible accident. God humbled her and made her His. To the extent of these wonderful works. Which have blessed over +200,000 people of different Religions.
This census done many years back.

There’s nothing like it in the world.

The Bible is Prophetic in nature and full of Private Revelations, that became Public Revelations. The Whole World Knows about it. But how did each book within, come to fruition?
The works of Maria are Revelations of unknown proportions which no man can adequately define. And Is the Thought, The Word, the Breath and Lily of God given to man. Indescribeable.
Anyone who hasn’t read her works and hasn’t learned, been blessed, is skeptical and has no faith in God. Period.

Peace and may God grant you the desire of your heart.

Popes read her works and learn from it.
Unsubstantiated claim that cannot be verified.
Revelation from God to Man.
The Church’s infallible teaching is that the last revelation ended with the Apostles.

This is an ignorant statement that verges on heresy. It does show the danger of this fiction. The Church defines it as fiction who are you declare it anything else? I have been doing a lot more research and what I have found is not good. I had almost been convinced that it was harmless but after the above post I have realized that it is evil.
Her works are sold in the Vatican bookstore. Go look for yourself.
I Have been there didn’t see it. Thought I might have missed it so I looked on the online bookstore of the Vatican and they don’t have it either.

Hi BVXI,
Code:
Eliza had the most valid point; “The sheep know the Master’s voice”. Everything is summed up in that statement. The Chief Priests, Scribes and Pharisees did not recognize the Masters voice, and endeavored to silence it. They rejected the Cornerstone. But poor fishermen, prostitutes and tax-collectors did recognize the Master’s voice, and followed it. This is a key lesson, taught over and over again throughout the Bible. It is now, as it was then. Times change, but human indignation is always the same.

The angels appeared to poor shepherds to announce the birth of Christ, not the Chief Priests. They said; “Peace to men of good will”. That is the key: “Good will”. The Chief Priests, Scribes and Pharisees lacked this “Good Will”. However, the poor fishermen, prostitutes and tax-collectors that recognized the Christ, possessed “Good will”. They recognized the Master’s voice.

The same is with the Poem. The third and the last message given to Sister Agnes Sasagawa in Akita, Japan on October 13, 1973 reads: “…The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres (other priests). Churches and altars will be sacked. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.” As Pope Paul VI said, "the smoke of satan has entered the sanctuary" – “da qualche fessura sia entrato il fumo di Satana nel tempio di Dio”.

The blindness to the Poem is a litmus test indicating that this has already begun. Those who recognize the Master’s voice, can very clearly see God’s finger in these writings. No one could possibly convince them otherwise. They hear God, they see God’s work and they feel God’s love. Those who cannot, are unable to for good reason.
God Bless

This is what I believe happened.
Fathers Migliorini, Berti and A. Cecchin believed this woman was having a true vision. Instead of bringing this to the proper authority they chose instead to take it to the Pope’s spiritual director, Father Augustin Bea, S.J. Father Bea had read only parts of the manuscript in which he found nothing wrong. A private audience with the Pope was held with Fathers Migliorini, Berti and Cecchin. The Pope than made a non-committal comment to the priest who misinterpreted it. It doesn’t matter if one of them wrote it down immediately I believe he misheard in the first place. Due to his enthusiasm he heard what he wanted to hear not what the Pope actually said. I don’t believe that the Pope said to have it printed. For the following reasons:
  1. He didn’t follow it up by having it printed in the paper.
  2. There is no unbiased witness.
  3. There is no record of the Pope ever mentioning it again. That would be strange if he had been as enthusiastic as stated. Why would he have not followed up when he didn’t see it being printed? No he never mentions it again.
  4. The men did not follow Canon Law in bringing it to the Pope first. It should have been brought to their bishop who should have opened an investigation.
  5. The Pope would not go against Canon law that stated that the censor had to give his opinion in writing. In fact, before an imprimatur is given a nihil obstat is required. Of course the Pope has the power to do this but I don’t think that the Pope would have done it.
Any bishop requires a nihil obstat, since he has not read the book, to assure readers that nothing, in the book, is contrary to our Holy Faith. Even if there is an Italian edition of a book, with an imprimatur, and it is later published in other languages, it requires an imprimatur in each language and edition printed.
    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/user/My%20Documents/correspondence/Ann’s%20files/girm/critique.htm
  6. However, the Pope did follow canon law and a nihil obstat was denied. The verdict was that it was fiction. The reasons were given to the author per Canon Law. The Pope followed Canon law and said it was fiction.
  7. Even if there had been an imprimatur by the Pope, the next pope condemned it. That nullifies Pope Pius’ supposed imprimatur.

Dangers of the Poem

Someone mentioned other apparitions that were not readily accepted. The Church is slow to act and rightfully so. There are few Apparitions that are accepted by the entire Church. Usually only the local bishop accepts or rejects them. Few are outright condemned like Bayside is. What sets the true ones apart from the false is the willingness to accept the Church’s rulings. The true ones are marked with obedience. Something you do not see with this book. Even though the Church has ruled it is fiction you find those taken the authority from the Church and saying the Church is wrong I know it is the truth because I have been so blessed. The Church has said that this book is to be considered fiction. So the first fruit of this book has been disobedience.

The second fruit of this book is hate for hate is the opposite of charity. Charity is sorely lacking in those who promote this book. Instead there is slander, mean and vile to anyone who dares suggest that this book is not from God. Even though that is what the Church has proclaimed. Witness the attack against Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani. When the representative of the Church says it was taken out of context, do the supporters than stop the slander. Nope the reply is

I guess I wouldn’t be having Monsignor Francis Maniscalco babysitting my kids anytime soon.
This is rash judgment that assumes as true a moral fault without sufficient foundation.
Anyone who disagrees is attacked. This thread proves my belief. The attacks in this thread are most unchristian. Look at the other threads concerning this work and you will see the same.
It surprised me to see how little of the post here cannot be found on other sites verbatim and not very often is there any indication of where it was borrowed from. That is called plagiarism.

Jesus established a Church to guide us. He said
Matthew 16
18
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, 13 and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 14 Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Church is the voice of Jesus I listen to it. That voice has said this is fiction. This is truly a litmus test of whose voice you are listening to which master you will serve.

Are you seriously suggesting that apparitions - even approved ones like Akita, let alone unapproved like Maria Valtorta’s, and remember we’re not obligated to believe in Akita either - constitute the authentic ‘voice of God’ … whereas the OFFICIAL Church pronouncements contained in the Index of Prohibited Books, and our current Holy Father’s teaching (I doubt he’s changed his mind since becoming Pope) that that Index STILL retains every bit of the moral force it has had in times past, are not?

What is truly astounding is that Insight posts a link to the apparitions website to illustrate for us that the Akita apparitions are approved. However, he fails to recognize that this very website also demonstrates that there is NO approval for the Poem of the Man God.

Kinda like double-speak, pick and choose.

Hi Adrift,

If the approval of the Local Bishop and the Head of the Holy Office, now Pope Benedict cannot meet your criteria for an apparition. There is no basis to work with.

The Apparition No One Wants To Talk about: Our Lady of Akita
April, 1984—Most. Rev. John Shojiro Ito, Bishop of Niigata, Japan, after years of extensive investigation, declares the events of Akita, Japan to be of supernatural origin, and authorizes throughout the entire diocese the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita.

On April 22, 1984, after eight years of investigations, after consultation with the Holy See, the messages of Our Lady of Akita were approved by the Bishop of the diocese. In the Japanese village of Akita, a statue of the Madonna, according to the testimony of more than 500 Christians and non-Christians, including the Buddhist mayor of the town, has shed blood, sweat and tears. A nun, Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa has received the stigmata and has received messages from Our Lady.

June, 1988—Vatican City—Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, gives definitive judgement on the Akita events and messages as reliable and worthy of belief.

It is difficult to understand how Cardinal Ratzinger (Head of the Holy Office and now Pope Benedict) could be overruled a year later Ambrose de Paoli, claiming that someone from the Vatican told him to tell a British magazine that this never took place.

Apparitions.org is commonly quoted and the most recognized definitive Catholic resource used by Catholic Forum moderators. Cardinal Ratzinger’s judgment is the one that prevails.

As far as I can find out, full approval has not been given. If you really look you find that promoters do an end run. I have not seen reliable proof that there is full church approval just hearsay. Can you provide a Church document

Hi LilyM,

Saint Faustina’s writings were placed on the Forbidden Book List by the Holy Office under Cardinal Ottaviani on the very same day as Maria Valtorta’s, which now are read at Divine Mercy Sunday Mass.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, was Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani’s immediate successor in heading the Holy Office. He was personally groomed by Cardinal Ottaviani to become the new prefect of the Congregation. Cardinal Ratzinger did not personally scrutinize Maria Valtorta’s writings, he reiterated (simply upheld), his mentor’s verdict, avoiding the undermining his predecessor.

It is important to remember that in 1978, a Polish cardinal petitioned the Vatican to cease the suppression of Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion and to remove her writings from the Index of Forbidden books. The Vatican replied in the negative, upholding the condemnation and suppression. Which we now know was in error.

It remains that this is FICTION by the Church.

Red herring that has nothing to do with the status of the Poem of the Man God. As has been pointed out to you before, Sister Faustina’s work was put on the index due to a bad translation. It was not an error that it was on the list.

Hi Adrift,

Unfortunately the Vatican does not post this data. Apparitions.org is commonly quoted and the most recognized definitive Catholic resource used by Catholic Forum moderators. If you cannot accept the verdict on Akita, then there is no criteria to work with.

Maria Valtorta’s writings were presented to Pope Pius XII in 1947, who examined them for ten months. His Holiness agreed to a special meeting in 1948, in which He ordered the publishing before three Priests: Fr. Corrado Berti (Professor of Dogmatic and Sacramental Theology at the Pontifical “Marianum” Theological Faculty of Rome from 1939 onward, later becoming Secretary of the Faculty from 1950 to 1959, as well as consultant to the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council), Fr. Romualdo M. Migliorini (Prefect Apostle in Africa), and Fr. Andrew M. Cecchin (Prior of the International College of the Servites of Mary in Rome. These aforementioned Priests documented this event immediately afterwards with signed testimony. The fact that the Pope did grant this audience was historically documented the next day, February 27, 1948 in L’Osservatore Romano.

Since Maria Valtorta’s writings encountered several obstacles when the Head of the Holy Office took offense at being circumnavigated in the Church approval process, Cardinal Edouard Gagnon, writing to the Maria Valtorta Research Center from the Vatican on October 31, 1987, referred to Pope Pius XII’s action as: “The kind of official Imprimatur granted before witnesses by the Holy Father in 1948. An “Official Imprimatur” of the Supreme Authority of the Church”. The Code of Canon Law - Book II, Part II, Section I, Chapter I, Article I - gives the Pope full and supreme power over all levels of the Church and free use to exercise this power. The Papal order came first. Canon law prohibits this Papal order from being reversed by subordinate levels of Church authority. Canon law clearly requires that this Papal order be embraced with unconditional acceptance and submission.

God Bless
