Hi LilyM,

Saint Faustina’s writings were placed on the Forbidden Book List by the Holy Office under Cardinal Ottaviani on the very same day as Maria Valtorta’s, which now are read at Divine Mercy Sunday Mass.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, was Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani’s immediate successor in heading the Holy Office. He was personally groomed by Cardinal Ottaviani to become the new prefect of the Congregation. Cardinal Ratzinger did not personally scrutinize Maria Valtorta’s writings, he reiterated (simply upheld), his mentor’s verdict, avoiding the undermining his predecessor.

It is important to remember that in 1978, a Polish cardinal petitioned the Vatican to cease the suppression of Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion and to remove her writings from the Index of Forbidden books. The Vatican replied in the negative, upholding the condemnation and suppression. Which we now know was in error.

No it wasn’t an error - the Vatican changed its mind about St Faustina on further consideration, probably because of the bad translation factor mentioned above. It is allowed to change its mind on such matters, we on the other hand are NOT allowed to second-guess such disciplinary if not doctrinal or dogmatic acts of the Magisterium.

Furthermore the Magisterium loudly proclaimed its change of opinion on St Faustina by canonising her (usually considered an infallible act, I believe) and instituting the Divine Mercy feast.

When Maria Valtorta is canonised and a new feast instituted by the Pope based on her writings then I’ll be happy to read them. Until then I am bound in duty to submit to the Magisterium which still has not approved Valtorta’s work either implicitly or explicitly.

Hi LilyM,
Code:
There is logic in that. It is in the works, and many are hopeful that she will be Canonized.

Hi Adrift,

Unfortunately the Vatican does not post this data. Apparitions.org is commonly quoted and the most recognized definitive Catholic resource used by Catholic Forum moderators. If you cannot accept the verdict on Akita, then there is no criteria to work with.
Akita has nothing to do with this book nor with this thread you are trying to divert discussion away from the fact that this is fiction.
Maria Valtorta’s writings were presented to Pope Pius XII in 1947, who examined them for ten months.
So it is claimed by supporters but undocumented. What I have been able to discover from unbiased account is that he never read it. It is unlikely that he examined for ten months.
His Holiness agreed to a special meeting in 1948,
It was a normal audience nothing special about it.
in which He ordered the publishing before three Priests: Fr. Corrado Berti (Professor of Dogmatic and Sacramental Theology at the Pontifical “Marianum” Theological Faculty of Rome from 1939 onward, later becoming Secretary of the Faculty from 1950 to 1959, as well as consultant to the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council), Fr. Romualdo M. Migliorini (Prefect Apostle in Africa), and Fr. Andrew M. Cecchin (Prior of the International College of the Servites of Mary in Rome. These aforementioned Priests documented this event immediately afterwards with signed testimony. The fact that the Pope did grant this audience was historically documented the next day, February 27, 1948 in L’Osservatore Romano.
A private audience with the Pope was held with Fathers Migliorini, Berti and Cecchin. The Pope than made a non-committal comment to the priest who misinterpreted it. It doesn’t matter if one of them wrote it down immediately I believe he misheard in the first place. Due to his enthusiasm he heard what he wanted to hear not what the Pope actually said. I don’t believe that the Pope said to have it printed. For the following reasons:
  1. He didn’t follow it up by having it printed in the paper.
  2. There is no unbiased witness.
  3. There is no record of the Pope ever mentioning it again. That would be strange if he had been as enthusiastic as stated. Why would he have not followed up when he didn’t see it being printed? No he never mentions it again.
  4. The men did not follow Canon Law in bringing it to the Pope first. It should have been brought to their bishop who should have opened an investigation.
  5. The Pope would not go against Canon law that stated that the censor had to give his opinion in writing. In fact, before an imprimatur is given a nihil obstat is required. Of course the Pope has the power to do this but I don’t think that the Pope would have done it.
Any bishop requires a nihil obstat, since he has not read the book, to assure readers that nothing, in the book, is contrary to our Holy Faith. Even if there is an Italian edition of a book, with an imprimatur, and it is later published in other languages, it requires an imprimatur in each language and edition printed.
    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/user/My%20Documents/correspondence/Ann’s%20files/girm/critique.htm
  6. However, the Pope did follow canon law and a nihil obstat was denied. The verdict was that it was fiction. The reasons were given to the author per Canon Law. The Pope followed Canon law and said it was fiction.
No imprimatur was given for the above reasons
Since Maria Valtorta’s writings encountered several obstacles when the Head of the Holy Office took offense at being circumnavigated in the Church approval process, Cardinal Edouard Gagnon, writing to the Maria Valtorta Research Center from the Vatican on October 31, 1987, referred to Pope Pius XII’s action as: “The kind of official Imprimatur granted before witnesses by the Holy Father in 1948. An “Official Imprimatur” of the Supreme Authority of the Church”. The Code of Canon Law - Book II, Part II, Section I, Chapter I, Article I - gives the Pope full and supreme power over all levels of the Church and free use to exercise this power. The Papal order came first. Canon law prohibits this Papal order from being reversed by subordinate levels of Church authority. Canon law clearly requires that this Papal order be embraced with unconditional acceptance and submission.
  1. Even if there had been an imprimatur by the Pope, the next pope condemned it. That nullifies Pope Pius’ supposed imprimatur.
You really should provide links to what you claim.

Insight,

I do not understand why you keep going over this ground about an imprimatur.

An imprimatur does not change the Church’s ruling that it is fiction. You argue a moot point.

Nothing you have ever posted has ever changed the fact that the Church has ruled it to be fiction.

Hi Adrift,

I don’t have a problem with the Church considering the Poem fiction. The “Nihil Obstat” and “Imprimatur” provided by Bishop Roman (Titular Bishop of Nyssa Rome, Italy – now retired) & Archbishop Soosa Pakiam verify that Valtorta’s writings are free of doctrinal or moral error and nothing in it that contradicts Catholic dogma. That is enough for me personally. As far as fact or fiction is concerned, one can consider the archeological, scientific and technical substantiations. It is more than likely that anyone possessing simple deductive reasoning would be come to a logical conclusion.

“Maria Valtorta keeps perfect track of Jesus, Mary and over 500 additional personalities. None of which are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jesus is appropriately in Jerusalem and Judea for Passover and Pentecost in all four spring seasons, and at the Tabernacles in all three fall seasons of His ministry. Jesus traverses the land of Palestine from one end to another in at least six cycles (some 4,000 miles), ministering in some 350 named locations, including places in Palestine known only to specialized archaeologists.

The 10,000 pages of Divine Revelation were given by our Lord in completely random succession. Maria records the visions in simple bound school note books, with no corrections, in the random order as they were given. On the surface, the complete work appeared as a well shuffled deck of cards. Towards the end, Jesus provides the proper sequence, the key, which could not be realized until the mammoth task of typing the manuscript was completed, allowing the individual pages to be sequenced in the specified succession. When finally placed in the correct progression, the puzzle materializes into a seamless perfect flowing chronology. (keep in mind that she was unable to leave her bed).

Geologist and Mineralogist Dr. Vittorio Tredici points out how Maria Valtorta described and correctly named several towns and villages that were not even discovered until after her death. David J. Webster posted a landmark 31 page article that fundamentally proves the authenticity of Maria Valtorta’s writings. The “Poem of the Man-God” may be the very first Private Revelation ever to be scientifically proven genuine. David meticulously and methodically examines Maria Valtorta’s strikingly accurate descriptions of first Century Palestine for every piece of topographical evidence. He then compares this evidence with currently known facts that are only now being proven authentic. “Over thirty percent or 79 (all entries marked with * and ) of the 255 geographical sites in Palestine mentioned in the Poem were not listed in the 1939 International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE) Atlas. 62 (all) of these 79 were not even listed in the 184 page Macmillan Bible Atlas (MBA) published in 1968. [Maria Valtorta died in 1961] Where did Maria Valtorta get all these names? For a first century eye-witness to include so many obscure and unknown names would, of course, be expected. And most surprising is that these names, obscure and unknown in the 1940’s, are only now being proven authentic. 52 of these 62 have no biblical reference whatever, and 17 of these with no biblical reference have been either indirectly confirmed as authentic by recent “ancient external sources” found in the Macmillan Bible Atlas (1968) or actually listed in the HarperCollins Atlas of the Bible (1989). This makes a total of 29 confirmations since the 1939 ISBE atlas listing. Also among those 62 sites are mentioned the ruins of 6 ancient Palestinian cities some corresponding to the modern consensus on location. In addition, Valtorta’s precise descriptions of the natural topography of Palestine from numerous locations and the information about the outside pagan world of that day, including people, places, customs, Greek and Roman mythology, related in the conversations of that day, are strikingly correct.”

I thought you didn’t have a problem with it being fiction:confused:

You seem to think this miraculous. It is within the bounds of human capacity to do. I know a man who is able to look out of a jet and know what time it is. I know a five year old who is able to do fifth grade math. Astounding maybe but not miraculous. I have read a critique of this and it disagrees with you.

To claim Divine Revelation shows you have a problem that the Church has declared this fiction. I really wish you would document when you quote from others. I have seen what you have written in many web sites. It is not your own and by not saying so you are plagiarizing.
I will post some of the critique of someone who was forced to read this book latter this week.

Do you know this from your own research or have you taken the word of someone else without verifying the truth of it.
Many claims are made but I have found they crumble under scrutiny.

Hi Adrift,

I posted this before two or three pages back, and mentioned it was on the Fisheaters Forum, which appeared to be compiled from SaveOurChurch.org. A site by Dave Webster, who authored “Voiding the Voices of Heaven”.
I will post some of the critique of someone who was forced to read this book latter this week.
Renowned Mariologist Father Gabriel Roschini, OSM was commissioned to read the Poem for the purpose of refuting it and became an outstanding advocate of Maria Valtorta’s writings. A Saul to Paul story. Pope John Paul II often referred to Father Gabriel M. Roschini as one of the greatest Marioligists who ever lived. He was a decorated professor at the “Marianum” Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Rome, and an advisor to the Holy Office. He wrote over 130 Books on the Blessed Mother, all of which are in the Vatican Library. In his last book (which Father Gabriel said was his greatest, “The Virgin Mary In The Writings of Maria Valtorta”),the first two pages contain a letter of endorsement by Pope Paul VI. Page one displays a photocopy of the original letter in Italian complete with Vatican insignia, and page two contains the English translation. This constitutes a secondary indirect endorsement, in that the Holy Pontiff endorsed a book, that endorses Maria Valtorta’s writings.

You do like to side track and since you do not document where you get your quotes from I will

I have told you before that it doesn’t matter who might endorse this book the only one that matters is the Church. Father Roschini is not the one who decides on the status of this book. Those who do make that judgment have said FICTION. Nothing you have ever presented says differently.

Hi LilyM,

Saint Faustina’s writings were placed on the Forbidden Book List by the Holy Office under Cardinal Ottaviani on the very same day as Maria Valtorta’s, which now are read at Divine Mercy Sunday Mass.
This is an astounding point. Don’t forget - that list still retains it moral force. 😉

This is what I believe happened…

…Father Augustin Bea, S.J. Father Bea had read only parts of the manuscript in which he found nothing wrong.
On what basis do you think this? About how much do you theorize he read? Do you think he read a few sentences, a few paragraphs, or some fraction of the work? One fifth? One half?

How much do you think he read before he concluded the Pope should take time to have a look at it?

What do you know about Fr. Bea to be able to say he would be so hasty in his judgement?
A private audience with the Pope was held with Fathers Migliorini, Berti and Cecchin. The Pope than made a non-committal comment to the priest who misinterpreted it.
Do you think this pope habitually made non-commital, unimportant statemnets on matters of faith? I really don’t think don’t think many popes are like this.
…It doesn’t matter if one of them wrote it down immediately I believe he misheard in the first place.
Wow! You think he mis-heard it? How could one mishear a Pope in a private audience?? This seems extremely unlikely. Do you know something about this priest that makes you think he mishears things, has a hearing problem, or stubbornly changes what he actually hears into what he thinks he wants to hear?
… Due to his enthusiasm he heard what he wanted to hear not what the Pope actually said.
 Wow. I don’t think this is likely! Its pretty far-fetched!
I don’t believe that the Pope said to have it printed. For the following reasons:… [deleted]
I’m not reprinting the reasons you stated here because these reasons also seem to have very little logic or probablility. That suggests to me that you have an emotional or other reason for coming up with these far-fetched reasons for thinking all these people make things up. I can’t imagine what your motive might be.

Clearly you are holding on to only certain peices of evidence - the evidences you will acknowledge are those that point to your conclusion that Our Church doesn’t want the faithful to read Poem of the Man-God. Evidence that points to any other conclusion you refuse to acknowledge in any way - even to the point of making up higly unlikely senarios like these to refute that there could be any truth to any other way of seeing the situation thatn the way you see it.

Then, it seems to me - tell me if I am wrong - you to take it a judgment of those of us who don’t agree with you on this - and that is: that we are acting in disobedience (while you, instead, are obedient to the Magisterium of the Church!). 😦

At least thats what it seems to me you are saying. Correct me if I’m hearing you wrong.

Don’t forget that this remark was made by Cardinal Ratzinger who was specifically referring to the Poem of the Man God. 👍

Please forgive me for not having time to read the entire thread, but I just thought I would include a link to a website that I hope will help shed some light on this discussion, in revealing the truth of Maria Valtorta and the Poem of the Man-God;

I conducted further research on the blonde hair blue eye descriptions of Jesus in the Talmuds. I paid a visit to a Synagogue across the street from our Parish. A Rabbi was kind enough to provide an email address of an English speaking Jewish Educator in Israel, who was helpful enough to provide further assistance.
Code:
The Shabbath, Talmud and Yebamoth writings by the Chief Priests, Pharisees, Sanhedrin, Seduces and Scribes from the times of Jesus (Annas, Caiphas, Cornelius, Eleazar, Eli, Felix, Gamaliel, Hananiah, Helkai, Hillel, Ishmael, Joazar, Johanan, John, Joseph, Nahum, Nicodemus, Shammai, Sadoc, Simon, Triphon and Uriah). There is also historical data of Romans such as Josephus or Tacitus who also kept records.

The Jews hold these texts as authentic, while Christians, particularly Catholics choose to discredit these writings. Reason being, that there are many passages that are hostile to both Jesus and Mary, which would be expected from the Jews who had Jesus condemned to death.

 A horrible example would be:
“Jesus was a bastard born of adultery”, “Jesus was an evil man”, “Jesus was a magician and a fool”, “Mary was an adulteress”, etc.
Code:
However, they provide the first hand eyewitness blonde hair blue eye descriptions of Jesus and Mary, which the Israelis believe to be authentic.

Don’t forget that this remark was made by Cardinal Ratzinger who was specifically referring to the Poem of the Man God. 👍
Adrift,
It was Cardinal Ottaviani who made that remark. From the webiste I linked to above;

June, 1966: Cardinal Ottaviani authors a letter declaring that *“the Index retains its moral force, inasmuch as it warns the Christian conscience to be on guard, as the natural law itself requires, against those writings which can endanger the faith or good morals” *[14] 14

[14] This statement by Cardinal Ottaviani has been widely circulated by detractors of Valtorta, who use it to effectively reinstate the Index. Two points should be noted; 1) The proper understanding of “moral force” is defined in the very next sentence, i.e., to be “on guard”. It is no longer a blanket act of condemnation – It cannot be, since Saint Faustina’s diary was never removed from the Index, and yet we now celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday because of it. 2) It should also be recalled that only the first edition of the Poem was placed on the Index, whereas the second was granted permission to publish. Therefore, even if the Index was still in effect today, it still would not be applicable to newer editions of the Poem.
maria-valtorta.net/images/doc_paulvi.jpg

1974: Pope Paul VI writes a letter of appreciation to Fr. Gabriele Roschini, for his book; “The Virgin Mary in the Writings of Maria Valtorta” [15]. A photographic copy of the letter is posted in the inside cover of every edition. To view this letter, please click here.

**1994: **Pope John Paul II beatifies Venerable Fr. Gabriel Allegra, an outspoken supporter of Maria Valtorta and renowned Scripture scholar. The decree of beatification was promulgated in 2002.

Venerable Fr. Allegra writes; “When completed the Poem makes us better understand the Gospel, but does not contradict it…… I find no other works of eminent scripture exegetes which complete and clarify the Canonical Gospels so naturally, so spontaneously, with such liveliness as does The Poem of Valtorta.” 17

So it is claimed by supporters but undocumented. What I have been able to discover from unbiased account is that he never read it. It is unlikely that he examined for ten months.
Adrift,
Pope Pius XII’s verbal Imprimatur is substantiated by the written testimony of three eye witnesses (in a court of law in the United States, only two eye witnesses are necessary to convict someone of the death penalty). This is not a fact that should be minimalized, as some detractors seem to want to do. Pope Pius XII was known for his hobby of reading many books, as was pope Paul VI. This is why they were elected popes. They were not just holy men, but were also wise and learned.
nothing has ever changed the fact that the Church has ruled it to be fiction.
Adrift,
Please see the below exert from this website;

"Is the Poem Condemned by the Church?
The short answer, indeed, is no. If one were to consider the authoritative weight of all the statements made by curial offices and clergy, those with the greatest authority ultimately resides in the Chair of Peter; the Holy Roman Pontiff.

First Vatican Council, Session IV, Chp. IV, p.IX*“So, then, if anyone says that the Roman Pontiff has merely an office of supervision and guidance, and not the full and supreme power of jurisdiction over the whole Church, and this not only in matters of faith and morals, but also in those which concern the discipline and government of the Church dispersed throughout the whole world; or that he has only the principal part, but not the absolute fullness, of this supreme power; or that this power of his is not ordinary and immediate both over all and each of the Churches and over all and each of the pastors and faithful: let him be anathema.” *

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 883*“The college or body of bishops has no authority unless united with the Roman Pontiff, Peter’s successor, as its head.”*Therefore, let us now consider the actions of the popes on this matter;

[1948] Pope Pius XII: Granted permission to publish
**[1959] **Pope John XXIII: Signed the decree placing the Poem on the Index
[1966] Pope Paul VI: Abolishes the Index, thus nullifying John XXIII’s action
[1966] Pope Paul VI: Abrogated the Canon (1385) that was the legal principle for the inclusion on the Index
[1974] Pope Paul VI: Expresses his appreciation of a commentary to Maria Valtorta’s writings
[1992] Pope John Paul II: Beatifies an outspoken supporter of Maria Valtorta
-------] Pope Benedict XVI: pending

Thus, we observe three popes, whether directly or indirectly, supporting the writings of Maria Valtorta. The action of the one pope who signed the decree of condemnation, Pope John XXIII, was directly overturned by his successor Pope Paul VI just seven years later (as was the legal principle for the condemnation).

Such actions, while not part of the infallible magisterium, are nonetheless reflective of the mind of the Church through Christ’s shepards on earth, who have “full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always excersice unhindered.” Indeed, the divine protection granted to the office of the chair of Peter is what distinguishes him as the visible head of Christ’s body on earth. And as we have seen with mystics such as Saint Padre Pio and Saint Faustina (both of whom were condemned by the Holy Office), it was ultimately a pope who positively discerned their authentic lives of heroic virtue.

It is also worthy to note that, among the thousands of apparitions throughout history, very few have received the attention of a pope. In fact, most alleged apparitions are not reviewed beyond the jurisdiction of the local ordinary—if they are ever reviewed at all. Fewer still are reviewed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Thus, for an alleged apparition to be given direct recognition by a pope is a significant event indeed. All things considered, one may conclude that to grant unequivocal authority to the Holy Office’s temporary inclusion on an abolished Index, would not be in keeping faithful to the facts of history in light of the teachings of the Church"

I found a link to what appears to have been a very large Maria Valtorta conference in Canada. Bishop Roman Danykak was there and Mary Angela Nangini from Radio Maria.

advancedchristianity.com/Pages/Murray/Murray_005.htm

“Radio Maria in Italy has been presenting the works of Maria Valtorta for many years. Their nation-wide listening public in Italy is around 3 million strong, and both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict have made very public their support, appeciation and encouragement for this excellent and punctiliously faithful Catholic radio station. There are many Cardinals and Bishops who participate on a regular basis, and this certainly would not happen if there were even just a hint of something controversial in any of the many program offerings. The founder and president of the radio station is Padre (Father) Livio Fanzaga. He himself was once skeptical about the works of Maria Valtorta. I don’t know what it was though that convinced him. Anyhow, Radio Maria is pretty much all over the globe now, and in the course of some 25 years, the Vatican and two popes have found nothing at all to criticize about the many programs that have been dovoted to the works of Maria Valtorta. Radio Maria is tremendously influential among the faithful, and for this reason, the Vatican for sure keeps a close eye and attentive ear on the radio’s programming. But it must be said that even in the Vatican, Radio Maria is as popular and well loved as in any other place in Italy”

Rising son

This has all been hashed over. There was no imprimatur given by the Pope. Bishop Roman Danylak verifies this. An imprimatur does not mean that it is approved. Please see post 268.
The “Nihil Obstat” and “Imprimatur” are official declarations that a book or pamphlet is free of doctrinal or moral error. No implication is contained therein that those who have granted the Nihil Obstat and the Imprimatur agree with the content, opinions or statements expressed.
An Imprimatur does not mean that a book is an official text of the Church. It’s not the approval of the work by the Pope or a dogmatic Council, and it’s not a stamp of infallibility. It doesn’t even mean that everything in the book is accurate, only that there is nothing in it that contradicts Catholic dogma.
No matter what is said nowhere has the Church said that it was not fiction.

[1948] Pope Pius XII: Meets with Father Berti who claims that the Pope tells him to publish. No independent verification is presented.
[1949] Two commissioners of the Holy Office, Msgr. Giovanni Pepe and Father Berruti, O.P., condemned the “Poem,” ordering Berti to hand over every copy and sign an agreement not to publish it.
Father Berti returned the manuscripts to Valtorta and handed over only his typed versions.
[1952] Despite his signed promise, Father Berti went to publisher Emiliano Pisani.
[1956] Though aware of the Holy Office’s opposition, Pisani printed the first volume and a new volume each year through 1959
[1959] Pope John XXIII: Signed the decree placing the Poem on the Index Bishop Roman Danylak states it was put on the index for lack of imprimatur.
[1966] Pope Paul VI: Abolishes the Index, Many think that this means that they may read what was on the list
[1993] Cardinal Ratzinger responds to Bishop Boland of Birmingham, AL in a letter about the book: The response noted that because of continuing interest in the books the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had requested the Italian Bishops Conference to ask the publisher to have a disclaimer printed in the volumes that “clearly indicated from the very first page that the ‘visions’ and ‘dictations’ referred to in it are simply the literary forms used by the author to narrate in her own way the life of Jesus. They cannot be considered supernatural in origin.”

The scripture comes to mind from Luke 4:13, *“And when the devil had tried every temptation, he left him until another opportune time.” *The promoters of this fictitious novel always seem to resurrect under new names with new ammunition, in order to inject and further their agenda. I noted in another “Poem” thread that this occurred:
This thread was the target of an attack which involved an extensive use of sock-puppetry.
Since almost all of the recent interest in the thread came from a single individual posting under numerous identities, all of which are now banned for violating our forum rules, this thread will be temporarily closed.

I believe it is well and good to repost this page from Father Groeschel’s book concerning the poem.
“The Poem of the Man God has already been examined scientifically and placed in a well known category of mental sicknesses…The facts added to the second edition do not change the nature of the work, which evidences being a mountain of childishness, of fantasies and of exegetical falsehoods, diluted in a subtly sensual atmosphere, through the presence of a group of women in the company of Jesus. On the whole, it is a heap of pseudo-religiosity. Therefore, also for the second edition, the judgement of the Church to condemn it retains its validity.”
He noted for charity’s sake that these compromising facts do not negate the possibility that Maria was a devout and loyal member of the Church.

I question the motives of those who repeatedly promote the Poem as though it were a fifth gospel that the faithful are missing out on, and attempt to elevate it to the status of Doctor of the Church, for heaven’s sake.
