I’m sure there have to be some amateur poets around here. I’ve never considered myself that good of a writer, most of what I have ever written has been modern freestyle, with no attention to meter, rhyme, etc. But nevertheless, I have a sudden desire to share something I wrote about four years ago.

Contrition

It would be easy to sit here all night long
and make excuses for my actions,
but yet, that is no substitute for penance.
Do I offer an apology?
Or is this merely an attempt to justify my actions?

Yes, it is true that there were forces that I could not control.
But in the end, all was my choice.
I shunned you away; I did not want your help.
Now I have fallen, and am pleading with you to lift me up
out of the mire and clay.

I know that you will help me, even if I fall seventy times seven times in a day, O Lord.
Remember that although it was the enemy who loaded the gun,
placed it in my hand, and pointed it at my soul,
it was I who pulled the trigger,
all the while you cautioned me to beware.

For these and all my sins, I am sorry.
Amen.

Greetings!

Thank you for sharing your poem, ABostonCatholic. I certainly enjoyed it! It was very powerful.

I would like to share something as well – a brief poem I wrote after I found my Eucharistic Adoration journal I had lost a few years prior.

“Gifts of Eucharistic Adoration”

I buried my thoughts
Under two shirts in a box,
Closed and trapped
Between two oaks.

The intimate knowledge
Still present but forgotten,
Hides, only to show itself
When I choose to pick up the pen.

I’d also like to share a poem by Fr. Leonard Cochran entitled “Omnipotence,” about the moment of Consecration at the Mass.

“Omnipotence”

There is the hush before
infinity shrinks
to this white circumference,

when words
more fragile than thought
can shape a miracle,

and trembling
I raise up
my (obedient!) Lord.
