What is the point of having sex during a woman’s infertile periods, i know there should be reasons to use NFP, especially if a couple is having social, economic, and phsyical problems…and they absolutley cannot raise a child in correct conditions. But what would be the point of having sex during a woman’s infertile periods if you are not having a baby…I don’t get it…

Can someone help me… 😦

Are you asking about reasons for avoiding pregnancy or about reasons for having sex during the infertile period?

To the latter point, sex does not become “less than” when a couple is not physically able to become pregnant. It is still just as much a sign of their love, commitment, and devotion. It brings joy and pleasure. There is nothing wrong in enjoying sex even when you know that pregnancy is very unlikely. The sin is in deliberately separating the two ends of conjugal intimacy, for example, by contracepting.

Wow. This really hurts me. I’m infertile, like all month every month. You think I shouldn’t have sex with my husband? The church is perfectly fine with people using NFP and the church is perfectly fine with me having sex with my husband, by the way.

Sex has two purposes, to bind together in mutual giving and love one’s spouse and the result of that can be children. You have a very insensitive and un-Catholic view of sex. The point of sex isn’t always children. Stop being so flippent.

I am sorry Kendra and I realize that this question is totally off base and insensitive. Thank for speaking up because Op should have known better. You and your situation are in my prayers.

May I ask how old you are and how many religious education classes you have taken?

I would read Theology of the Body and the parts of Catechism that focus on marriage to clear up your misunderstandings.

Don’t be so extreme! I didn’t know…Do you think a priest would respond to me like this, anyway i am 19 and i am reading it as we speak and i was just worried that if sex isn’t for pregnancy there is no point…So if i am trying to avoid pregnancy for econmic reasons lets say, is it ok to have sex without the intention of having a baby(obviously keeping the possiblity in the back of my mind), but just for the act of making love?

That is all i was wondering. Please don’t be so hard on me, i am learning, thank you.

I am sorry i have offended others, i was just contemplating this in my heart, not understanding it fully.

No one is being extreme. Your question has been answered. Yes, NFP is OK. Yes, you can have sex without making a baby.
You should be open to life, but sex doesn’t have to equal a baby. Again, I can’t have children and the church is perfectly fine with me having sex with my husband.

I still don’t understand why though…
The church says, and i am not trying to offend, that you have to have a good, serious, reason to use NFP, such as economic reasons, physical reasons, and social reasons(i don’t make up the rules the popes did).

I still don’t understand the point of having sex during a womans infertile period if you can’t have a baby at the time, when the whole basis of sex is to have a baby, and the unitive part is just the 2nd most important thing, it makes no sense

the way i see it is that i would want to have sex only for having a baby. I don’t understand what the point is for doing it without the intention of having a baby, it is beautiful i know, but i just don’t understand it…

Sorry if i am not making sense it is kinda early for me where i live

Just please don’t be rude as well, i just want to have a calm conversation, though you answered my question i don’t understand why the answer would be that…

I have sex with my husband because it feels good and we bond. Hubby is deployed and I am very much looking forward to bonding with him when he returns.
Keep in mind that even if you are in your fertile phase, it doesn’t mean a baby will be conceived. People with no fertility issues can take months trying to conceive before it happens. So fertile sex doesn’t equal a baby. So if you think that you only want to have sex to conceive, you will probably end up being upset. Also, your spouse may want to have sex more often than when you are ready to have a baby and you really shouldn’t deny your spouse sex for possibly years. That’s just mean and rather selfish. It is like you are just using your spouse for a baby. That isn’t how a marriage should work.

Thats not true at all(i am not selfish)…I really don’t understand all this, im sorry i am only 19…

I think 19 is old enough to understand that sex is procreative and unitive. The church is fine with people having sex just for uniting, as long as you are open to life. It is very simple.
Also, I didn’t call you selfish. I said it would be selfish to just use your spouse for baby making purposes.

Think of it this way…my family has dinner together for two reasons…to stifle our hunger, and to spend time together and bond as a family. Even if I worked late and wasn’t hungry when I came home, I would still sit down with my husband and kids to talk and share time as a family. The bonding is as important as satisfying hunger.

Sex has two purposes…creating new life and bringing spouses together. Even if I’m not fertile or in a position to have a baby, I still go with my husband to bond with him. If you’re only 19 and have been chaste this whole time you might not realize how much sex can bring spouses closer, but it can in a very real way. The bonding is as important as creating new life.

I don’t think your question is offensive but it gives the impression you have a very low sex drive or something like that. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I hope this doesn’t offend you.

I do have a normal sex drive as any person but i am just having trouble understanding all this…why does the church say it is ok to have sex during a womans infertile cycle, i get the reason should be serious but why is it ok to do so? if again the basis should be always being open to life

You do understand that even if you are trying to conceive you can have sex when you aren’t fertile? Trying to conceive doesn’t mean having sex only during fertile times. It is OK because making love to your spouse is good. Sex isn’t a shameful, bad thing.
I am infertile. I’ve been told to not get my hopes up to have children, but I’m still open to life. If a miracle were to happen I would be very happy and would welcome the child. That is what open to life means. To be open to the fact that you could possibly have children, not that you have to have children right now.

19 is old enough to be able to understand. I’m not catholic but let me try & explain.

I think you are confusing intentionally trying to avoid pregnancy and the normal sexual relationship between husband & wife. Sex is unitive & procreative. However sex doesn’t have to produce a child every time. Its more unitive with the possibility or openess of being proreative.

Yes there has to be economic, social or psychological reasons to INTENTIONALLY AVOID a pregnancy. However a woman is only fertile for 24hours in every month.

There is no law/rule to say that a couple who are completely open to children should only engage in sex at certain times. As has been pointed out, you can have sex within the fertile period and not get pregnant.

A couple who is open to pregnancy or a couple avoiding the fertile periods for the right reasons can have sex in the infertile period.
