If an industry or entertainment in itself isn’t inherently immoral, then it provides jobs, which in turn raises the standard of living all around. Wealth is created.

Hey sue me, I haven’t been in the fandom for a long time. Sadly, Pokemon is just waay to kiddie for me now that I’ve seen more games/anime/franchises geared to more mature audiences.

The problem is entertainment (even those of the likes of Pokemon) aren’t as meaningless as you assume. You know, I used to design my own original Pokemon when I was a kid and my first ever fanfiction idea was for Pokemon. Now I’m writing my own story with my own creations and my own characters. The one thing I notice about any kind of industry is that not only does it draw people to buy, it can also draw people to work for it and earn a living with it. Isn’t that a good thing?

I mean suppose I were to publish my work and suddenly I earn money by entertaining more people and drawing them into a fanbase. Am I evil then? Does the moment that I become successful and rich from getting people into “mindless” entertainment make me Satan’s tool?

Like I said, this doesn’t smell like spirituality. It smells like socialism.

Yu-Gi-Oh is something that is by far worse. I remember that there were a whole lot of freaking satanic cards like a creature dragging monsters into hell. Pokemon encourages team-building and patience. There’s nothing wrong with a show so simple and benign. The only problem I have with Pokemon is the constant flow of new monsters which are getting weirder and weirder looking every time. By-the-way, Machoke is my favorite Pokemon.

I guess I am too old for Pokémon (spell it correctly!) and Yu-Gi-Oh but you seem to be correct about their declining quality.

Regarding, YGO I find the newest spin-off simply dumb where they play the card game on motorbikes. I particular hate one character who says platitudes based on it such as “I am the master of faster!” shudders I saw it a while ago while flipping channels on a Saturday morning. I found it surprising how the series could be so popular when it is just a conspicuous ploy, a twenty minute advertisement along with ten minutes of “real” advertising, to sell merchandise such as the trading card game.

Maybe I would have like Pokemon if I was younger. I did watch a few episodes during the late 90s, but I was about ten years older than the average fan then. Pokemon really is a nice celebration of the innocence and vitality of childhood and I was envious of some of the younger fans when I watched it, seeing my adolescence was slipping before me. I still find Psyduck and Jigglypuff hilarious!!

I watch 5Ds in original Japanese. It’s definitely darker and more mature… and also more palatable. I swear it’s time people stopped pretending and realize that Yu-Gi-Oh! is really the Japanese version of Magic: The Gathering. If you’ve seen the original artwork of cards such as Exile of the Wicked, Dark Magician Girl, Guardian Angel Joan, and Harpie Queen, you’d say the same thing.

I was referring more to idea that socialism believes earning money and being rich is evil (which is what Ciel-1 and I were discussing). I mean I’ve only watched much of the original but I never found anything like that. Heck in the games you earn money by beating people so in a way, that’s not socialist.

I read the brief summary about the 5ds plot here after you said “it was more dark and mature” because I figured it would be quicker to read than to watch the whole series, but I was not able to understand what I was reading. It might take some time for one to appreciate it.

And, who here has yet said there is anything “bad” about Pokemon? It is the same as anything else. Whether it is Bingo, Cigarettes, Budweiser, Facebook, or You Tube. People, generally, tend to be addictive in nature. Addiction keeps us from evolving into spiritually mature people. We have to be careful and rein ourselves in.

A game like Pokemon can be educational, much like playing cards. To imply that it would inspire a positive change in a person, I think, may be a bit of an exaggeration.

I’m just saying that, as in all pleasure-oriented pastimes, the tendency exists. If there is any “evil” to be found in Pokemon, it would be the above.

Strangely enough though, after watching the first two seasonal arcs it really does grow on ya (particularly D-Wheeling XD). I used to think it was more bizarre than the Duel Academy but now I think it’s kinda cool.

I’m not yet sure I’d wanna fantasize about that though. If I were to ever get sucked into that universe, I’d probably still say, "No thanks! I like dueling with my two feet planted on the ground. Besides, you see… I just ate so I’m still digesting… so my starts quoting Po the Kung Fu Panda

Actually, you’re quite on the mark. 4Kids had done some decent jobs… but note, only some. Exceptions to the rule like the original Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and (from my personal opinion) Shaman King are not an excuse until they wake up and realize they need to start repeating whatever it was that caused the to make those exceptions. If not, I resume boycotting it most of the time.

I didn’t say that. I’m just pointing out that the idea of seeing the industrial complex as the devil’s invention and that earning money via franchises is evil is actually quite socialist.

It’s just that some people tend to confuse those with an addiction with those who want to become a part of the industry. Tell me, do you deny that there are comic book geeks or book worms who eventually become creators of their own titles or novels? Those people can be pretty addicted to such things. I mean look at Quentin Tarantino. He started out as a movie buff. Are you gonna tell him his addiction didn’t serve him any good?

Jack himself is starting to become less of a Seto Kaiba rehash and more of a humorous supporting character.

Not exactly. It’s what I’ve been saying before really. Yu-Gi-Oh! is really just the Japanese counterpart of Magic: The Gathering (with it having an anime while Magic has its novel spinoffs).
