Hi all,

Minutes ago the county police just knocked at our doors for the 3rd time at around 10:00pm. Minutes before they came, we heard a man shouting profanity near our apartment. We don’t know if his voice came from the outdoors “hallway” near our door or just outside the parking lot.

The 1st time: Policeman knocked and told my husband that a person called them because they sensed weed coming from our apartment. My husband obviously told him that we don’t do drugs and invited him to come in. The police said “it’s alright, that person sounded crazy, I don’t know, but you are good.” And he left.

The 2nd time: Policeman knocked and told my husband that a person called them because supposedly we were smoking. My husband obviously told him that we don’t smoke and invited him to come in, and then I appeared with the baby in arms and police said hi, and we told him that weeks ago the police came and told us this and that. The policeman said “it’s alright, that these people are disabled, I don’t know, but you are good.” And he left.

And the following day (today) came a policeman and a policewoman for the 3rd time and told us that someone called saying they heard bangs and a baby crying. They left saying you guys are good.

No citations from any of these complains.

We are worried, and I’m scared. What if someone is targeting us?

Your opinions?

Someone is unfortunately a few face cards short of a full deck. Let’s just say that if the mob or someone else with a fully functional neurological apparatus is out to get you, this is not how they do it. Leave the neighbors alone and do what you can to stay off of their radar, but do not waste any energy worrying. You have to breathe in and out, so don’t try to stop doing that in order to appease people like the ones calling the cops on you.

The chances are not low that you have neighbors who are the victims of some sort of dementia. Is there any chance that this is an age-related dementia? If so and if you know enough about them to alert their children, by all means do so. The children may need you to help them look out for their declining parent. (Usually, it is only one of them.) If you can be that kind of help, you will probably be a godsend.

  1. Somebody has it in for you. (It might possibly be that somebody is annoyed by your baby.)
  2. There is pot smoke coming from somewhere in the building, but the person calling it in has the wrong address. (It’s not that easy to tell where smells are coming from.)
I prefer #2, but #1 is unfortunately a possibility. You might want to talk to the police station and point out to them that you’ve had three visits that turned up nothing, and you’d like a flag to be put out (if that’s possible) saying that there’s possibly some sort of nut in your building that is calling in unfounded accusations. That way you will be spared what must be a very scary experience and police time won’t be wasted.

Best wishes!

Absolutely never ever allow police into your home without a warrant. That’s just asking for trouble.

We have been guessing that it could be someone with mind problems like EasterJoy mentioned. And here you can’t hear baby crying from out the apartment. When they said about a baby crying and some bangs, we heard nothing but that man talking profanity while our baby was sleeping.

We don’t know anyone and we haven’t exchanged words with anyone. We recently moved here 6 or 5 months ago.

It’s sounds like you have a neighbour who is not entirely mentally healthy. Perhaps dementia, schizophrenia, parania, etc.

If they keep making unfounded complaints to the police, the police will work out that they are the problem, not you. I expect the police already know this, but are going through the motions for the time being.

I would not worry about this for now, but if it persists I’d probably go to the police station myself to discuss the situation.

Alright. We will wait for the 4th time to then discuss it with the police. For now, husband will talk with the landlord tomorrow or when he can.

I wouldn’t wait. I’d go down tomorrow and chat with the police. Get yourself on record as being harassed.

I had a neighbor who did the same kind of thing.

First it was the City Code Enforcement officer. Nothing wrong, no citation or even warning given. By the 3rd call in 4 months, I refused to grant the officer access to the property. I told him that he’d already been out on 3 unfounded calls, could see everything but my back deck and inside the garage from the front porch where he was standing, and since there was no basis for the complaint, I asked him to leave.

Then it was Animal Control. On the 2nd unfounded visit, the officer said he wasn’t coming out again.

Then it moved on to the police. That happened once, I spoke to the Code Enforcement officers, the Animal Control officers, and the police in the same day.I was quite perturbed.

They agreed that I was being harassed and they called the person who had been making the reports and explained that any new reports that turned out to be unfounded would result in criminal charges and restitution to the city for the officers time, mileage, wear and tear, etc.

I do not know who it was, but I have my suspicions…

Right. Nobody is going to think of you as jumping the gun if you report harassment after three police visits.

Normally I would agree that you should never let the police in your home unless they have a warrant, but in this case, since someone is apparently targeting you, I think actually making friends with the cops would be a good idea. Offer them coffee or soda, and tell them you have a malicious neighbor with a screw loose. Better to have them firmly on your side, just in case your neighbor escalates the situation and tells them you have a meth lab or are running child prostitues out of your apartment, or something. Seriously, if it were me I would call and make an appointment with whomever I could - the chief of police or a detective or somebody. Too often we hear about SWAT raids gone terribly awry.

If it were me, I would consider this a priority.

I agree with the prior poster, go down to the Police station and ask to talk with a detective so that you can file a false-call and harassment charge.
If call Four happens… do like you’ve already done before. Normally, I wouldn’t invite an Officer in to my home either as it gives them open access to all things visible in your home… keep the Bible out on the coffee table 😃 However, in this case, you place the Officer at ease, people hiding drugs and hitting their kids and spouse do not typically invite an Officer inside… that’s what has save you so far!
  • If this is someone that is mentally ill, then they need help and filing the harassment charge may get them that help.
  • If this is someone that has taken offense at something, real or imagined, that you or your family or friends have done, then this can become very, very, very dangerous. The complaining party has escalated from “smoking pot” to “sounds of domestic assault” that just might end up with you and your spouse in jail and your child in foster-care along with other hassles to your and spouse’s job(s) and credit while they “investigate” the situation. (ExiledChild is on track with this! - AND YES THIS DOES HAPPEN!) and you need this party charged and jailed for your family’s protection.
You might also contact a criminal lawyer to file charges with the County Attorney’s Office against the party filing these false complaints. You can attempt this yourself; however, the paperwork has to be done “just so” and you need the police reports etc… could be well worth the money!

My intuition tells me that someone has it out for you. If you live in an apartment, it may be a neighbor who thinks you’re too loud, or any other reason. I do feel concerned because what if this is someone who knows your faith and is targeting you?

Ask for the intercession of St. Michael for protection and please be careful.

I have to agree with this, as opposed to the stance one should take if they were the criminal. In this particular case, the person being complained on could become the victim, and it would be useful to establish this.

Besides, you should believe about half of what you read in most of the internet, especially when it so conveniently supports that site’s agenda.

Will pray for whatever’s going on here, for the help of those calling the police, those under the grip of drugs, and your family’s peace and quiet.

It sounds quite like the police know the callers are crazy/disabled (I guess mentally disabled) and are just checking out of protocol. If I were you I’d go to the station and express your fears. They may be able to reassure you that they are aware of the people and advise you on how to proceed to protect yourself or nip it in the bud. Don’t bait them or retaliate. I never get why people think that would be a good idea and yet many go that road and escalate things for themselves.

You need to find out who is calling the police on you and why. If the person has it out for you or is crazy or there is a mixup or what. It is important that you do this BEFORE the next time because there are several scenarios that are indeed dangerous. Like for example if the people are mentally unstable what there next move may be or if they are annoyed at the baby what there next move might be. I would be concerned that they may decide to take matters into their own hands. YOU need to be getting the police involved with this. What they have done is harassment, and it has a reason and a motive. You don’t want that to escalate.

Please, for you safety and peace of mind, find out who this is and put a stop to it.

Not to mention that the police can indeed get pretty nasty with someone who is wasting their time. Get this taken care of.

As for the fear mongers who say never let a policeman in. There are some situations that may apply to. This is not one of them. Here, it is better to have the law as an advocate FOR you.

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of, that they take matters into their own hands. I mean I dont even dare to take baby for a walk or go to the office to pick up a package.

Thanks everyone so far.
