Sergeant Matt Ratana was shot dead at Croydon Custody Centre in the early hours of yesterday morning. Coincidentally, today marks exactly three months since the death of Special Police Constable Resham Singh Nahal, who had been injured by a car while attending a separate road traffic accident last year. The subject of police deaths in the line of duty has been at the forefront of many people’s minds since the trial and sentencing over the summer of the three men responsible for the killing of Constable Andrew Harper last year.

It has been widely reported that Sergeant Ratana is the tenth British police officer to be killed in the line of duty during the past 10 years. The Police Roll of Honour in fact records more than 10 deaths, including officers who died in road traffic accidents on the way to or from work, from natural causes while on duty, from suicide, in a helicopter crash, and, in one case, from exposure to asbestos during training. On any view, a dozen police officers have been wilfully or recklessly killed by members of the public in the execution of their duties during the past decade.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, especially our police officers, rest in peace.
Amen.
