This news item claims that a law restricting abortion in Poland led to fewer abortions and then fewer premature births. It is claimed that abortion raises the risk of later premature birth (I was not aware of this claim, but it appears to be correct per the below).
Pope John Paul II is receiving credit for ending communism in Poland which led to the law restricting abortions being passed. There has been a decrease in deaths of young children with CP. This is being linked with a lower incidence of CP in infants, related to a lower % of very premature births.
The one thing they didn’t seem to address was whether advances in medicine during the years of this study also helped to prevent deaths.

I was a preemie, at 29 weeks in 1968. I can confirm based on what I know that prematurity is associated with a much higher risk of cerebral palsy. It is also associated with other problems that can persist throughout the life span, such as autism, depression, bipolar disorder, and the likelihood that young people will be on disability. This holds true even when other factors such as socio-economic status are controlled for. I have links on prematurity I can post if anyone is interested.
