Political positions of the Church are a stumbling block for me

What political positions?

If you mean opposition to abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, &c. those are moral, not political, teachings.

If you mean statements in favor of health care or immigration reform & the like by individual bishops or even the USCCB those are not official Church teachings.
We should listen to the bishops on these issues by we’re not bound by them.
