somebody pointed out Starbucks is off limits because of an unspecified connection with Planned Parenthood.

The liberals usually have long lists of products and companies to boycott for environmental or other reasons.

Do pro-lifers and proponents of other causes have a buy/don’t buy list?

What about the various brands of coffee being promoted because they are a)organic and protect rather than destroy the environment by the way they are grown & presere rainforests; b)provide income to small farmers and counteract growing of drug-providing plants; c) other considerations I am to dumb to know about.

I think there is a brand of coffee,I believe it is called Free Trade, which is a co-op of bean farmers that sell gourmet coffee. They are run by a group who assures the farmers of good rates for thier beans and ar not exploited like the farmers who sell to starbucks are.Our parish serves thier coffee exclusively in our parish hall.

They are also big supporters in the gay pride parade of San Francisco.

I am lucky to have a great Christian orinted local coffee shop in my place… It has better coffee than Starbucks to.

I had no idea Starbucks supported such things! It’s a good thing I don’t drink coffee. 😃

I had no idea either and Starbuck’s is my favorite coffee place. There aren’t many choices around here but I guess I’ll save some money, eh?

WOW! I had no idea either, My Fiance and I go there all the time. I guess we’ll have to go somewhere else. Ouch!

Starbucks has always made me feel a bit uneasy…maybe it is the masonic artwork in some of their chains:eek:

Who is “they” – a particular franchise or the national corporation?

I second JMJ Pinoy–I’m glad I don’t drink coffee.
But I HATE the term “politically correct”. How about “spiritually conscientious” in this case?

Now I’m going to have to check out my TEA suppliers, though.

But cheer up. For Lent we always give up coffee, tea, cocoa, etc. and have a glass of hot water with lemon and honey instead. (Or you can use mint leaves and sugar). If necessary, we could spread the word to all the people who normally drink coffee, tea, etc. and have a day, or week, or longer, where we would have the Lenten “cuppa” as a protest/ sacrifice.

Hey, if we can have a “smoke-out”, we can have a “caffeine-out”.

I buy a brand of coffee called Kahve that actually beats Starbucks in a side-by-side taste comparison and costs about $1.25 for a 12 cup pot, versus $1.65 for a Grande at Starbucks. Soooo, better coffee, better price, to me its a no-brainer.

…or maybe it’s the $4.65 for a cup of creative coffe. What a ripoff.

Has anyone else noticed that it is now more complicated AND more expensive to get a cup of coffee at Starbucks than a meal at McDonald’s?

Starbucks: I’ll have a decaf venti sugar free white chocolate mochaberry with soy milk and an extra shot of esspresso, no foam, caramel on the side, please? :whacky: Sure, that will be $5.87 please.

McDonalds: I have a #2, medium, with a Coke. 👍 Sure, that will be $4.12 please.

Proctor & Gamble with their huge gay agenda - we don’t buy their products.

We are currently looking into Sienna Communications for our home phone/cell phone service. The business really has to stay with SBC, otherwise, we won’t be able to be listed.

Um… I’m uncomfortable with the discipline of sacrificing (“giving up”) at Lent being used as a way to make a political statement.

Besides, for me, not drinking Starbucks brand coffee is a natural. I hate the taste of the stuff.

Have a much better “fancy coffee” place in town.

Perhaps, for Lent, the funds we use to buy a fancy coffee could be used to donate to the poor. Or our parish. Or Catholic Charities. Or any of a number of pro-life organizations that are around.

$0.02 duly deposited.

Could someone please quantify the criticism of Starbucks with some factual, verifiable information and source thereof? This thread so far sounds like a game of telephone. If we are to boycott or otherwise discern how and where we spend our $ we should at least attempt to do so in an informed, intelligent manner.

I don’t really see a conflict. Our pastor is always asking us to “give up” stuff that is REALLY bad for us (not just fattening) like Anger, Pride or Selfishness. There is no reason that when we fast there isn’t a secondary good effect. If that effect is less money to a company with a questionable agenda, that seems ok to me.

There is no way I could do at home anything equivalent to a Venti, triple, White Chocalate Mocha, full fat. So the cost savings of buying my own coffee and making a pot would be lost. However, luckily, in Houston there are several smaller independant coffee shops with much better coffee than Starbucks, served just as creatively.

I don’t drink coffee, but I love starbucks caramel apple cider…mmmm!!! So good. Unfortunate if true.

I second this. If my computer would cooperate, I’d check myself. The only place open when I go to work is the Starbuck’s in the outpatient center of hospital where I work and probably 80% of the hospital’s employee’s visit each morning. It’s a bad habit, but there aren’t any other vendors open and it’s not wise for me to do surgery without my morning coffee. 🙂
