giving up coffee is not an option, at Lent or any other time, everytime I try it I go into a 5-day migraine and end up in the emergency room. I am down to one cup, but I need that one cup (well it’s actually a mug–a big one). Is there a source for rain-forest friendly, gender-neutral, non-sweatshop, organic pesticide free, whale-sparing, no-nuke coffee that is not sold by the same people who push condoms on grade school kids?

I’m checking with my boycott expert right now. Will keep you updated.

If you want I do know a monk that makes excellent coffee. vashonmonks.com/ They are Russian Orthodox but they are a really wonderful (for the most part) group of guys. Oh, and the coffee is wonderful.

Hey, I have in-laws on Vashon Island, now I know what to ask for as a Christmas present, thanks for the great link. Anybody know of missionary orders in coffee-growing countries that market coffee"

Starbucks: I’ll have a decaf venti sugar free white chocolate mochaberry with soy milk and an extra shot of esspresso, no foam, caramel on the side, please? :whacky: Sure, that will be $5.87 please.

Try walking into a Starbucks and ordering a “small, black coffee” sometime. Watch hilarity of confusion break out.

Who is “they” – a particular franchise or the national corporation?
Starbucks does not do franchises, so if they are supporting anything it would be the whole company.

Veronica Anne, I see your point.

But unfortunately, civil rights issues are, by their nature, political ones. We don’t live our Catholic faith in a vacuum.

If our well informed conscience and legitimate church teachings lead us to the conclusion that peaceful protests, including boycotts, are necessary to ours (and others’) spiritual welfare, then the fact that they might be judged “political” protests shouldn’t force us to “not do” them.

If I’m praying at an abortion clinic, my actions might be seen as “political”. In the sense that I’m exercising my first amendment rights, they are indeed political. In the sense that I’m attempting to follow the teachings of Almighty God, the actions are religious. So, there’s an overlap (due to the fact that we as Catholics live both “in the world” and “not of the world”).

I hear ya. I used to buy 4 dollar coffees all the time, until I met my husband who has a heart condition and ZERO caffiene policy. I tried to give it up for him, but I was grouchy ALL THE TIME, went off coffee completely while I was pregnant though. It was really really really really hard.

Really. Recently fell off the wagon and bought a home esspresso maker. Haven’t used it yet though.

STRONG COFFEE = CHRISTIAN CRACK

Coffee was found by Monks in Ethopia, I believe. From my rembrance it was something they found that could help them with their prayers at night.

Yeah, I heard that Capuccino was invented by the Cappuchin Franciscan Friars…something about the color of the coffee matching their robes…anyone know if that is true?

and coffee goes great with brandied fruitcake, also a discovery of the monks

The coffee you speak of is called Fair Trade coffee

crsfairtrade.org/

We actually buy this at our church and sell it to our parishioners and give the proceeds to good causes.

you can also buy Fair trade coffee online here.
store.yahoo.com/equalexchange/paccof.html

if you want to make yourself aware of companies that support Planned Parenthood visit

fightpp.org/

You will be surprised of who is listed there. Hopefully this answers some of the questions here.

Peace be with you all.
