I was just thinking that if the 10 commandments were written today one of them might be written differently. At the risk of blasphemy “Thou shall not covet thy neighbors wife” should read differently such as “thou shall not covet thy neighbors spouse”. It must have been a sign of the times back then to imply that the wife must be always be innocent in marital infidelities. And strictly translated it says nothing saying the husband can’t cheat. And then there’s the whole same sex marriage issue. Maybe God can bring Moses back to rechip the 10 commandment stones. Some food for thought.

The Bible also mentions that it is a sin for a man to lay with another man. No word on lesbians.

But yeah, sign of the times, and male being the dominant sex and all. It’s kind of irrelevant, it’s just as much of a sin for women to lust after other people’s husbands. We know what it means.

As for same-sex marriage, well that’s not a valid marriage anyway, so the ten commandments would have any say on their adultery anyway.

What’s the meaning in the original language it was originally written in?

Don’t forget, if you are reading it in English, it’s a translation.

And if she’s not your neighbor but lives on the other side of town then it’s all good :rotfl:

Actually your mistaken…the bible does indirectly make reference to lesbians.
The plausible implication of Homosexuality resides in both sexes.

Romans Chapter 1 verses 16-30
Romans Chapter 1 verses 26-27 (Douay Rheims)
[16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel. For it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth, to the Jew first, and to the Greek. [17] For the justice of God is revealed therein, from faith unto faith, as it is written: The just man liveth by faith. [18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in injustice: [19] Because that which is known of God is manifest in them. For God hath manifested it unto them. [20] For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity: so that they are inexcusable.
[21] Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] For professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. [23] And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man, and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts, and of creeping things. [24] Wherefore God gave them up to the desires of their heart, unto uncleanness, to dishonour their own bodies among themselves. [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
[26] For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. [27] And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error. [28] And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient; [29] Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness, full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers, [30] Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Peace
Chris

Well, sure, the Ten Commandments (and all of the Bible) was written for a particular historical culture and society. The language and conventions it utilizes are sometimes different from what we use thousands of years later. One of the difficulties in interpreting the Bible is how to separate the eternal values God is imparting versus the historical dross which simply reflect a bygone era.

Fortunately, the Catholic Church, which is guided by the Holy Spirit, is able to be sure that its interpretations of the Bible are correct.

One also must remember that back in Moses’ day, women had no rights or choices. They were property and they were under the control of their husband or father if they were not married.

If you read the commandment in it entirety it says, *"You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ss, or anything that is your neighbor’s" (Exo 20:17 RSV). You can translate that to both sexes if you want.

The Ten Commandments are addressed to adult male Israelites, of the free, property-owning classes. They express a timeless and universal morality, but in their particular details they are directed towards a certain kind of person within that society - this is seen in the assumption that he owns livestock, has a wife, has elderly parents etc.

God wrote the tablets by his own hand. My guess is that as God is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient and all, He probably put on the tablets exactly what He wanted on them.

I guess that is why it is best that God writes His own stuff, people always want to second guess Him.
(Calvin anyone?).

Said like a true Marxist!

Including the inherent contradictions.

If the ten Commandments *"…express a timeless and universal morality…", then they are not directed at one particular class. If that were the case, they would not be “universal”.

I hardly think in Biblical times people thought women never cheated on their husbands. See John 8:3-5.

Also, we have an entirely different commandment prohibiting adultery…

Part of me thinks ** Orielensis** is getting the Ten Commandments mixed up with the US Constitution, but that seems like an odd mistake to make.
