Washington, DC – A new Harris Poll finds a plurality of Americans want all or most abortions to be illegal and overwhelming majorities of Americans want more abortion limits in law. The nationwide poll showed just 9 percent said abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during pregnancy – Barack Obama’s position.

While I agree with the findings of this poll, I wish the author had included more poll data including number of participants, locations and sample method.

There have been many polls across very large demographics. They all have found the above to be true. They have also found that the majorty of people in this country consider marriage to be the union of one man and one woman.

However, the secularist nation, the pro choice culture, feminists, and the liberals will not let this truth come to the surface for fear that it will hurt thier cause.

Is this a Harris Interactive poll? If so, its not necessarily accurate since it would be based upon online responses.

I noticed that the news article didn’t link to the poll, which raises my suspicions as to its accuracy.

its in the article but location and sample method would be good… trawling for people outside an RCC church would be different from a student campus for example.

Harris is pretty widely respected. It’s one of the top polling organizations and has helped to develop the modern standards of opinion research, so I trust this poll.
Reading further, I notice only six percent (one in every 17) want no restrictions on abortion at all, while 11 percent (one in nine) want it illegal even when the mother would otherwise die. These are the extremes. Three-eighths would allow abortion only in cases of rape, incest or maternal jeopardy of life. Nine percent (one in 11) favor keeping it legal throughout pregnancy, but a third of that number favor some restrictions. So 49% pro-life (but a few f that number would allow abortion if the child is conceived during a rape), and 9% pro-choice (but often with some restrictions.) Five to one.

But its not a Harris Poll - its a Harris Interactive poll.

I am just uneasy about trusting the results of online polls.

That said, I think previous polls have indicated that an overwhelming percentage of Americans favor some kind of restriction on abortion. So the broad outlines of the results are believable.

Interactive polls are never very reliable. Doing the same poll over and over is always quite easy, even those that try to limit participants to limited numbers of entries.

Be suspicious of polls that seem to hit especially high numbers on any issue. A few years ago, some pollster released a poll that claimed virtually all Americans were very much for foreign aid. It turned out that the question was phrased something like “Do you think that rich nations should share some of their wealth with others?” Who would say anything negative?

I would love to know the country is overwhelmingly pro-life, but most people don’t seem to give it a thought. Even when I go to Mass, I regularly see cars with bumper stickers from pro-abortion political candidates and from organizations that support abortion rights. People see an issue the candidates or the organizations represent that seems the greatest thing and that is all they want to know. As Paul Simon wrote “A man sees what he wants to see and disregards the rest.” If people who regularly attend Mass are not paying attention, should we really believe the whole country did at the time of this poll?

Seriously, do you really want more government in your personal life? If the church can’t persuade its female members not to have abortions, even at the risk of Excommunication and Outcast then how can our corrupt and incompetent bureaucrats even have a chance in hell to solve this problem. If the Church truly believes that abortion is murder then it is going to have to get a backbone and hold its female members accountable by labeling them “murderers” to the other church members and not giving them a free ride by just the act of Confession. Believe me, this will prevent 300,000 abortions a year committed by Catholic women.

Do you mean violating the Seal of the Confessional?
I believe we should hear more explicit homilies about the fact that abortion is murder. But individuals should never be outed.

but then they wouldnt be able to say that americans want all or most abortions illegal…
