i will reserve my own statement of opinion on the subject, although some already know from reading my posts…

could you please also state what religion you are and maybe your age, and whether you agree with the Roman Catholic Church’s position on the subject.

thanks.

Ok, i answered my own poll … So much for reserving my own opinion… 😃

anyway, i say it is, objectively speaking, a serious sin, especially when a person knows that it is serious and doesn’t do much to stop it…

ignorance and immaturity can be factors that somewhat lessen its spiritual consequences but it is always a serious disorder and such activity lets the devil into our lives… and uh… isn’t he there enough as it is ??:hypno::banghead::ouch:

Hahahaha, yay for non-skewed polls!

What is your favorite ice cream flavor, chocolate or vanilla?
a. Chocolate brownie
b. Chocolate
c. Super fudge extreme
d. I don’t know

Admittedly, the vast majority of responses you’ll find on these forums are going to be represented by the choices you provided, but even so, don’t you think you should provide the full range?

well, its either a sin or its not…

what possible other options can there be??

like sometimes it is a sin and sometimes not… like when i am aroused, its OK but when i am not it is not?? uh… i don’t get it…

that was what i call a “Freudian oversight”… 😃

you know you’re Cathlic when you make such mistakes 😃

but even if you dont’ think its a sin… or a mortal one, i should say… you have to admit doing this kind of thing doesn’t do much good for anyone and is, at best, a waste of precious time…

right?

Catechism Of The Catholic Church
ARTICLE 6
THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT

You shall not commit adultery.113
You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.114
113 Ex 20:14; Deut 5:18.
114 Mt 5:27-28.

2352 By masturbationis to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.”

“The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

So yes it is but I voted sometimes it depends on someone’s immaturity for a person my age yes it is a mortal sin-Stan.

so i think we can agree that it is a sin but not always a deadly (mortal) sin?

i feel this is accurate because before i was catechized (14 yrs ago or so) and b4 i knew Jesus intimately (Real Presence) i didn’t think it was a big sin as long as it was done just to relieve stress or (etc)… meaning there was no porn involved or objectivifying people… or whatever… but now that i walk with Jesus fairly closely, it is a greater sin… it would be more serious if someone like me were to do it… I know too much…

there is something in the bible about how those who are ignornat are beaten with fewer “stripes” than those not so ignorant…

the interesting thing is, though, that even the ignorant are beaten… (Purgatory, etc…). ignorance is no excuse… its just a mitigating factor or whatever you call it…

Well, I didnt say not sure, but I agree with the statement that it is always a sin, but not necessarily always MORTAL. Even with full knowledge of the sin, without full consent (i.e. habit, nocturnal dreams, etc. etc. ) it still may not be a MORTAL sin.

But yeah, not sure? really?

lol, usually when you have a yes/no question like “do you think masturbation is a mortal sin,” No is usually an option. I love the fact you forgot to include that option. Well you can put me up for “no”

He was probably typing with one hand while posting this poll and, in the heat of the moment, forgot to list “no” as an option.

About in par with anything that feels good but does no good… such as drinking anything other than water, desserts, gourmet food, getting a massage, manicure, pedicure, scratching an itch (scratching is bad for your skin even though it feels good-- ask any dermatologist), watching TV, going to the movies… well pretty much any form of entertainment.

There isn’t anything that always a mortal sin. The only thing you can say is that masturbation is a grave matter and a mortal sin if the other 2 requirements of full knowledge and deliberate consent are fulfilled.

If you know the Body of Christ (the Universal Church) teaches that it’s a sin then it is a mortal sin no question about it.

Its meaningless to talk of something the Church has declared (could be) a mortal sin to not be a mortal sin. Why? Because the Church itself is responsible for the definition of mortal sin! It is not as if the concept of mortal sin exists separate form the Church, and we can debate whether it happens to include masturbation. Mortal sin by definition includes masturbation (when other elements of mortal sin are present). It is rather like asking “Who thinks a crow is not a bird?”

Now, if you want to debate whether masturbation is wrong, that is a different matter, because the concept of “wrong” is not a term created by the Church. But as long as we use the Church’s lingo, we have no power to try to change what the Church means by it.

I voted “sometimes,” and for one reason only.

The Church does not define what is mortal sin and what is not. It defines what is grave matter and what is not. The conditions for mortal sin, of course, are: That the action constitutes grave matter, that the person committing it is aware of its gravity, and that the person committing it has full consent of the will. Therefore, I don’t believe it’s possible to truly classify masturbation as “mortal sin in every circumstance” as such; rather, it is grave matter, and the presence of other factors (knowledge and consent) are necessary to gravely it sinful in an absolute sense.

i think it is dangerous to believe this and to teach it to others… although everyone has a consicience so maybe i need not worry so much…

i never used to think this was a huge sin either… It is interesting that what changed my mind was getting closer to Christ… becoming catechized, spending time with Jesus in the Real Presence, etc…

without holiness it is impossible to please God.

every sin we commit warps us and changes and deforms us…

and takes away holiness…

without holiness it is impossible to please God.

***the saints tell us that more people go to Hell over sexual sins than any other…

this sin is not like drinking pop rather than water… ***
