To understand the position of Shi’ism within the Islamic tradition, one must compare it not to Protestantism, which arose many centuries after the foundation of Christianity as a protest against Catholicism, but to Eastern Orthodoxy, which has been there from the beginning. Although Catholicism and Orthodoxy have been at odds with each other for nearly one thousand years, both belong to the totality of Christian orthodoxy. The same holds true for Sunnism and mainstream Shi’ism…One should never refer to Shi’ism as a whole as a sect, any more than one would call the Greek Orthodox Church a sect.

The Orthodox Church cannot trace their Bishops to Peter. The Catholic Church can and does.

Either I’m reading this wrong, or what you wrote is silly or at least irrelevent. The Orthodox can certainly trace their bishops to the Apostles. Nobody doubts that. The lineage of the Patriarch of Constantinople, for example, is well-known and can be traced back to the apostles.

Hello Maranatha,

The Prophet Muhammad was quoted as saying that there would be 73 Islamic sects by the end of time. And when asked which one was correct, he said to follow the majority.

Currently, Sunni Muslims make up 80% of the Muslims on Earth, and they follow Islam the way it was taught by the Prophet. Shia make up aout 12% of Muslims.

Birth control is a matter of dispute in the Orthodox churches. A few reject it completely, a few accept it completely, and most are somewhat conflicted.

Nevertheless, the issue of birth control is becoming a barrier to unity.

For Muslims, that may be like asking whether Iowans are more American than Californians. ##

But - that is to ask a question about Islam, that is framed in Catholic terms; in terms of a religion which is not Islam.​

It’s like asking how many Sacraments Shias have, or whether the ecclesiology of Wahhabis is more adequate than that of other Sunnis: the terms of reference are Christian, not Muslim, so the question cannot be usefully answered in the terms in which it is phrased.

One can ask where in the Americas Nebraska is; one can ask where in North America Nebraska is; but one can’t usefully ask where in Canada Nebraska is. Once the terms are specific enough to ask where it is in Canada, one is asking an inapplicable question. ##
