Poll: Holy Water at home?

I don’t have a Holy Water font I DO have a small bottlr of Holy Water I keep in a smal niche next to my door. I tried using a font but didn’t like it the water kept drying up and getting cat hair in in it :o
 
All we have ever had is a few bottles of Holy Water in our house, but if I tried to install a Holy Water font, my mom would first look at me like I was nuts, and then proceed to tell me that I was paying for the materials to fix the holes I just drilled in the wall. However, I wouldn’t mind putting one in my own house (when I get all grown up and out of college and med school, so it may be a few years)

I sort of understand what holy water is, but I still want some clarification. How does the priest bless anything? Can a non Catholic use holy water or would it be showing disrespect to Catholicism? I always assumed that I shouldn’t dip my fingers in the holy water kept in church until I became Catholic. By the way, this SUnday I will go to mass-the first time in 11 years.

Mine keeps going bad in the bottle. Stuff floating, stuff growing… It’s like a petrie dish in there. I get it from the fonts at church (because the big metal container is back in the sacristy and hard to get to), and I think it has bacteria from people dipping their fingers in it all the time. It seems to be clean when I first get it, but then stuff appears in it within a week.

Then there are the stories you hear of bums urinating in the fonts, or junkies using the water to mix dope, and then rinsing their needles in them. What a world we live in.

I’m also a little concerned about the way it’s blessed nowadays. They don’t seem to put salt in it anymore, and the new blessing formulas don’t use exorcism, nor do they specifically ask that it be an aid to drive away evil, for protection, etc.

I wonder, are priests allowed to use the old rite of blessing holy water? I was thinking of asking my priest to do that for me, and see what he says. I wonder if he speaks Latin.
 
You bet…it has become a custom with our children to apply to the forehand at bedtime. Sometimes there a special circumstances, like today, my little girl bumped her forehead and put quite a knot on it. Holy water applied. Our fish was looking sluggish…a few drops of holy water. My boy, well, sometimes my wife and I are so fed-up with him, we want to dump the whole font of water on his head!

When we run-out, we simply fill our container from the tap and bring it to mass. Afterwards, Monsignor applies the blessing.

Actually, I just got some holy water today. :yup: We had speakers at confirmation class who brought some from Lourdes. :dancing:
 
I was given the font as a gift, but I do not know how to get Holy water. Are we aloud to just take some from Church? If so, the fonts at our church are small. I would not want to take too much. The Baptismal font at my parents church is a large immersion pool easily accessible, at mine it is a small bowl on the alter.

In addition, someone mentioned that their font dries up. Is it better to have a bottle of water rather than a font so it will not dry up?

We keep ours in a bottle. Typically, we just get it from the fonts at Church. I do not know if different parishes have different rules. You may want to ask you pastor.
So my answer to the poll is we do not have a font. We do have holy water tough. Our family does not use it every day we have always kept it around for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversary, holy days, or when someone is ill or having a troubled time. I was taught to not over us it. My great Uncle was a priest and he cautioned that some people use it so often and more out of what seemed like superstition rather than using it as a holy a sacramental.

Yea, that metal tank, in the church, that says “Holy Water” on it is there for our use:yup: . Take a small bottle with you and fill-er-up. Don’t worry about the church running out, :yup: Father will bless more if he needs to. Don’t take the water out of the founts, that the people put their hands in to bless themselves, thats what the tank is for, and it’s cleaner:rolleyes: .

Yes, just at the front door, so we can use it on the way out, God forbid but it could be the last time we get the chance to Bless ourselves.
