Poll: I can understand why people leave the Roman Catholic Church

If all medical means have been exhausted, yes.
 
Define “ends her suffering?” Are we talking euthanasia or taking her off like support?

The medical community can ease her suffering by pain management. There is no reason for someone at the end of their life to suffer to the point that they cannot stand it and wish they were dead.

But, we cannot just snuff them out in order to ease their suffering.

I agree that the proposed case is very unlikely, and that pain management is unquestionably the preferred option. But if medical care was not available, there was no other way of relieving the excruciating pain of the dying person, and the person clearly requested it - yes, I would end her life. I certainly wouldn’t feel good about it, but neither would I think that I’d done something immoral.

I just hope I don’t ever have to deal with such a situation.
 
My current issue of Our Sunday Visitorrefers to an article in* Commonweal* which apparently deals with Catholics leaving the church to become Protestant. It refutes the original article. I’m interested in reading the Commonweal piece. The general theme seems to be that come of the most loyal and sophisticated Catholics are leaving because of such issues as role of women, the celibacy of priests, gay rights, etc. Probably the article provided one Catholic’s opinion of why they leave.

I think once my health starts tilting that direction, I’ll muster my last strength, walk into Kandahar wearing an American and Israeli flag and twin chrome 45s at my hips, rest a cold beer and pork rinds on a Koran in front of the village elder’s house and say “any of you sallies got something to say about that?”

All of our old people deserve a good Klingon death!

Well make a guess. How many seats are in your church. 6,500 registered families is 25,000 registered people. If you have a 2,000 seat Church it’s big, the average is probably 950. Do the math. 25,000 X .25 = 6,250 / 3 masses =2,080 per mass and with 2000 seats you got SRO, which I salute but it is still 25% thanks to AmChurch.

We need to get real, we’re in deep doo doo.

Well I’ve been there, actually in the room across the hall from me now with my late brother. Don’t be too flippant with the situation, it is quite horrific, but pain control techniques do help to ameliorate the suffering.

Not so very long ago I would have agreed with you. And then I became Catholic and learned that suffering has a purpose. Perhaps it is our Purgatory here and so we suffer with Christ as St. Paul did.

He was confident that he would receive his just reward in Heaven. He welcomed his suffering.

Of course he was a saint. 🤷

I agree entirely, but we also need to discern the roots of the problem and send to a peaceful retirement those CCD and RCIA “teachers” who are essentially anti=Catholic.

It does make one wonder why someone who hates Catholicism would want to teach catechism! 🤷 RCIA in my area is pretty corney and poorly-done. RCIA didn’t teach me jack-squat. I was self-taught with the catechism and Catholic theology. My confirmation in RCIA at age 21 was a lousy experience.

The Catholic high school about 45 minutes away from here is a liberal hotbed or weird teachers that have liberal attitudes. My friend and his wife pulled their son OUT of the high school because it was so liberal and “out there” that the public high schools were better options and less brainwashing! :eek:

I think Catholic education is in a serious, serious decline in quality, energy, and the the whole system is bland. That’s in my area at least. I can’t speak to everywhere else. All the schools within an hour radius of here are poorly-run IMO.
