A I sat in mass this morning, I noted that only I and a couple of elderly Vietnamese were wearing jackets and ties. We have had a lot of discussion on women’s attire, and especially veils. How about what men wear for Sunday - specifically ties and jackets.

I am rarely in a jacket, although I am often in a collared shirt with tie and, depending on the temperature, sweater vest. I usually only wear a jacket (which for me means a suit, since I don’t have a “sports jacket”) on days likes Christmas and Easter.

Neither, as my parish seems to be so casual. Even the Eucharistic ministers wear a collared shirt at most. I always wear long pants no matter the temperture out of respect. I have tattoos on my legs and while I have no problem with that (obviously) they may distract others.

Neither,

Usually a collared shirt in winter and a polo shirt in summer. I rarely wear a tie much less a sportcoat/jacket. If I do EM ministry then I bring out the khakis otherwise jeans (except for Christmas and Easter).

shirt and tie every sunday

I do have a sports coat, but i only have one shirt to go with it, so I’m saving it for special occasions(the Latin High Masses, etc.)

plus, I am on a college campus, so shirt and tie is pretty much the most common dress you’ll see, most of us college kids don’t own too many suits

i dont ever wear ties. for my shirts to fit my body and arms the neck is too small to button and ties just look bad with that button undone. as to the jacket,…its Texas.

really i think about it the same way i do women. women should wear dresses and veils if possible, but you can still be plenty respectful without it. same for jackets and ties.

I usually wear a buttoned shirt and dress slacks and shoes.

I wear a collared shirt and pants. No jacket. Unless it’s cold outside. That’s the purpose of a jacket, after all.

Neither. Usually jeans or trousers with a button-down collar shirt tucked in. I think it’s fine so long as you put some extra effort into it. personally (and no offence to the poster above), I think jeans and a t-shirt is kind of slack. Mind you, I sometimes come in jeans and t-shirt when I have been out all day without a chance to change beforehand.

For Easter services I generally wear a shirt and tie.

When I lived in the city (Toronto), I would always wear a dress shirt and dress pants for Sunday attire. On Easter or Christmas, it was a suit. That is what most men wore there.

Now that I am living in the country area, the attire is much more casual. Now I wear jeans/khaki’s and a golf shirt (summer) and long sleeved casual shirt in the winter months. No man wears suits here, so neither do I.

The poll results sound a bit disappointing, because such a high percentage wear neither tie or jacket. If you look at the opposite end of the spectrum, the following are just some of what is being worn by kids and adults.
  • Shorts
  • Mini-Skirts
  • Ripped Blue Jeans
  • Low Cut Blouses, T-Shirts
I will typically wear khakis and a button down shirt with a pair of nice shoes. I admit its not as nice as a tie and jacket, but compared to what parishoners are wearing nowadays, at times i feel like I’m over-dressed.

I wear a long sleeve button down shirt and dress pants. I save the jacket for cooler days, and ties are painfully uncomfortable for me, but I break’em out for important days.

I currently do not serve any ministry during mass (i.e. lector, usher, or extraordinary minister of communion) but should I some day, jacket is mandatory in my opinion, tie might make reading out loud difficult.

I was not going to enter this debate because I do not have a problem with men not wearing a jacket and tie to Mass, any more than I do not have a problem with women wearing pants (not jeans or shorts, please), but the answer by one poster I find upsetting.

SenorSalsa, your answer bewilders me. You consider ONLY THE LATIN HIGH MASS to be important enough to wear a sports jacket?

“I do have a sports coat, but i only have one shirt to go with it, so I’m saving it for special occasions(the Latin High Masses, etc.)”

Do you not consider every Mass to be a “special occasion” wherein we celebrate the Real Presence of Our Lord and Savior?

I hope that is not what you are really saying.🤷 😦

I generally just wear a black shirt. Then I put over it an amice, an alb, a cincture, and a stole. If the parish owns a dalmatic, I’ll wear that too. It’s all much easier than trying to do a Windsor knot in the mirror. 😃

I have noticed that at Spanish Masses in my parish, the people tend to come well dressed, with most of the men wearing either American or Mexican-western dress shirts and often jackets. At the English Masses, most of the men wear polos or T-shirts.

Interesting topic Joe!

My dh typically wears a shirt and tie, as though he were going to work/interview. Rarely a jacket, as it’s rather hot here in Florida…but getting cooler, praise God.

My son…he is nearly 16 y.o…and wears nice jeans and shirt…or nice shorts and a tee. We often attend the evening masses, where it seems that people from elderly to the very young, dress more casually…still neatly, but casually. On Sunday mornings, people are often dressed up…it’s interesting.

I don’t think that a jacket is necessary…but a shirt and tie…or a nice shirt with dockers or something for men, is also very polished looking…

I highly doubt that Jesus would care if someone came in sitting next to him wearing nice fancy clothes or shaggy clothes. A few verses in James come to mind actually. The intentions of the heart are what is important. Pleasing God is much more important than pleasing man.

James 2:3-4 (New American Standard Bible)
(3)and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”
(4)have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?

I think it better compared to the widow’s mite, she gave all she could. If someone doesn’t have a nice shirt, that’s fine. But if you don’t want to dress in finery to worship God because its inconvenient or not your style or whatever other reason you want to use, God will see that.

Don’t forget the parable of the wedding feast and the guest that wouldn’t wear the nice outfit provided for him. It has always been a sign of respect and joy to dress nicely. Why dress nice for a date or a concert but not for the holy sacrifice of the mass.

I have lived in the panhandle of FL and mid-Alabama for the last 10 years. Only in the last four years hear in AL have I started wearing a coat and tie to Mass.
I realized I would wear a coat and tie for any number of wordly events, yet wouldn’t take the time to do so for my Savior at the most wonderful other-worldly event here on earth.
Once that hit me, I couldn’t not wear a coat and tie to Mass!

i only wear a coat and tie if i am a paulbearer, at the moment i dont even know where my suit is.
