For the non-Catholics. Do you reject some Catholic teaching (or any teaching, for that matter) solely on the basis of “It’s tradition, tradition is bad”?

For the Catholics. What do you think most of the CAF Protestants will choose?
As an Eastern Orthodox I have no problem with Catholics on the subject of Holy Tradition, my disagreement is rather on whether certain dogmas are indeed faithful to it. I think one problem with Protestants is that they don’t understand what Holy Tradition is, so they react against a misconception.

Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican would be the most traditional, however Lutherans and even Methodists adhere to lots of traditions, such as the liturgical year, robes or sashes for thier pastors and communion rites (although they are a little watered down!)

But other Christian denominations I think are pretty much sola scripture, which each denomination having their own crazy spin on the Bible!😃

Ah, yes, each with their own crazy spin. You know, when I initially made the poll, the last option was actually in the same spirit as your comment. I had to change it, though. Something about being charitable…that kind of thing. It was the right call, and I was able to make a couple other improvements along with that one.

Except for without Tradition there would be no Scripture to use.
Perhaps it wouldn’t be organized as it is without Tradition. Certainly God’s inspiration of the writers was not a result of Tradition. Rest assured, my friend, I recognize the great contribution of Tradition, and the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. All Christians are indebted to these.

I didn’t vote because I have no idea.

This poll segues rather nicely with some other threads. With tens of thousands of different Christian denominations, it’s rather impossible to say what any non-Catholic Christian will believe.

I think I read here that there are 53 different “flavors” of Lutheranism just in the US alone.

Thus, how could anyone pin down what any Protestant is going to believe?

Hey, Cooter…I’ve enjoyed your posts on other threads. I am a 3…it is my conviction that traditions are unavoidable and sometimes useful, but that they should never be viewed as divinely inspired. I am thinking about starting a tradition with respect to my conviction, but so far, I haven’t been inspired to actually do so.

Maybe by asking the Protestant in question and listening…is this a trick question?
Well, Radical, the poll asks me to vote on what I think Protestants, in general, are going to answer.

Here’s my choices as a Catholic:
  • Most non-Catholics on CAF will choose one of the first four options. 5 ^^^ will not be a popular one.
  • The most popular choice of the first 5 will be option 5.
So you see the choices I’ve been given? How in the world could I answer for non-Catholics when there’s tens of thousands of different non-Catholic understandings. 🤷🤷

Sadly, there is no unified non-Catholic voice. Chaos and confusion, rather.

Personally, I think many non-Catholics have a profound misunderstanding of the term tradition. Likewise, they do not understand the distinction between [t]radition and [T]radition.

Many believe Tradition and Scripture are pitted against each other and that is completely false.

You don’t have to answer for tens of thousands of non-Catholics. Just the ones who use CAF. There’s not that many of us, and you do get to find out if you were right.

Which ones? Moondweller? Richard Kastner? Janet1983? Lesley Polley? Dokimas? 1beleevr? Anna Scott? GKC? Bluegoat? Blueshadow123?

I’ve been in dialogue with all of them and why would I choose one of them over any of the others?

They’re all representative of different Christian paradigms. Some radically different. And I wouldn’t presume to answer for any of them.

Wow!!

I just clicked on another thread and here’s a post by a non-Catholic Christian that proves my point rather nicely.

So I will add ckempston to my list as well.

We got a vote for number 5! Would you like to make any comments? Unless you’ve already made some, of course.
Complete change in topic, to post 28…
Thanks for saying that, Radical, I appreciate it. If you start that tradition, what do you think you’ll call it? It if was me, I’d be trying to decide between German names and Latin ones.

Source, please, PR.

Regardless of “flavor”, true confessional Lutherans can be “pinned down”. Check out the three ecumenical creeds, the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, the Small and Large Catechisms, etc. If they confess something other than these, as a right reflection of scripture, then they aren’t Lutheran.

I’ve heard Catholics here at CAF say the same thing about “Cafeteria Catholics”

Now, Jon, I was very careful to write that I said I read it *here. *

And here is where I read it. Courtesy of Randy Carson.

For what it’s worth. 🤷

Yes. That. All of the above.
I’ve been in dialogue with all of them and why would I choose one of them over any of the others?
No one has ever asked you to choose one of them over any of the others.
They’re all representative of different Christian paradigms. Some radically different. And I wouldn’t presume to answer for any of them.
Wouldn’t you, now.

You only need one, PR.
Each of those non-Catholic Christians would vote a different way–some probably are different today than when I first dialogued with them, depending upon the church they currently belong.

Again, how would I choose one of them? And why would I choose one over the other?
