Which form of the Penitential Rite do you prefer?
  1. The Asperges (with no Confiteor or Kyrie)
  2. The Confiteor (followed by the Kyrie)
  3. The Kyrie alone (short introduction followed by Kyrie)
  4. Why can’t we have the Asperges, Confiteor, and Kyrie together?

During Easter, such as now, I prefer the sprinkling rite.

I voted hastily, I would like to amend my choice and opt for the last - why not all three?

I like the Asperges. It reminds us of our sins being washed away in baptism and in Christ’s blood.

Surely, like incense, the Confiteor has been banned? I certainly know I haven’t heard it used in years. 🤷

If it were still legal, then I would have to vote for that approach, as I have always loved it.

We have it at every Mass, except the liturgical feasts where the sprinkling is mandated (like Easter Vigil). I hear the other versions when I travel and it always throws me a bit. :o

You make me jealous. 🙂 There are four parishes in this town, and one of those is Vietnamese. Of the remaining three, none use the Confiteor in any Mass I have attended, regardless of the significance of the feast. The current Missal has so many possible choices and variations in it when compared to the old form, and yet instead of variation what seems to have happened is simply a change to a shorter or less traditional choice as the new permanent method. Kind of sad I think.

I have no real preference. All three get rid of venial sins which is good enough for me.

I’m partial to the confiteor but I do like the sprinkling rite too and I wish we had it more often.

In my parish, in spite of the many things that aren’t done the way the GIRM mandates, we have a very good blend of all three options for the Penitential Rite. In fact, we said the Confiteor just last week, at the anticipated Sunday Mass.

I dont’ have a choice or preference, the priest does, and I am not he.

I voted the Confiteor + Kyrie. And while we’re at it, let’s use a musical setting that makes the Kyrie the nine-fold acclamation it used to be.

I’m not a fan of skipping the Penitential Rite altogether and simply using an unadorned Kyrie.

By the nature of the poll you could probably guess I voted #4. I think that the Confiteor followed by the Kyrie *followed by the Asperges *would be really rich. It would be like John’s baptism: one of repentance (first) and water (second) and remind/unite us of our baptism in the spirit.

In the extraordinary form they do have all three, but the Asperges is done first. Which in this no-nothings opinion is a non-ideal order.
