Just a curiosity.

The Pauline missal gives three options for the Pentitential Rite near the beginning of mass. The first is (a slightly edited version of) the Confeitor. The second is a short, prompt/response combination. The third is also prompt/response, where the responses are the Kyrie.

The poll is to see which is most common where you attend mass. Not which you prefer (I have a feeling I know which would win that poll), but that can be discussed.

For myself, the parish I grew up in, where my parents still live, seems to use the third form most often (and indeed did at the Christmas mass we attended). The parish I attend most often uses the Confeitor.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the third one, for two reasons. Firstly, because I don’t like the blending of the Kyrie. It’s a very ancient part of the Ordinary, and it just seems to me to get the shaft in the third form of the Penitential Rite.

Secondly, because the prompts are usually pretty lousy. The exact wording is not prescribed, though there are suggestions that are based on scriptural passages. These, however, don’t actually contain any confessional aspect, just celebrating Christ’s redeeming power. While certainly worth celebrating, the purpose of that part if the mass is for us to acknowledge our sins. To not explicitly acknowledge that we are amongst the sinners seems weak to me.

Anywho, that’s my $0.02. Thoughts.

I voted for Form 1 because our Pastor generally uses that one. If he’s at the Mission and the other missionary celebrates Mass then we get Form 2.

The third one is the most common, but sometimes it is preceded by the Confeitor. During the week it’s usually the Confeitor then the Kyrie.

We mostly use form A, but also some times were use form B.

I personally like form A

All: I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

most of the time it is form C occasionally it is A and C, we have never done form B to my knowledge

I voted Form A - the Confiteor - but that is specifically with regard to Sundays, Holy Days, and Feast Days. For regular weekdays our pastor usually uses C, and our parochial vicar alternates between A and C. But we always use A for Sundays and Holy Days and Holy Thursday, and usually for solemnities and major feasts, unless the Penitential Act is replaced by something like the Rite of Sprinkling (this is rare).

At our main choir Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, the Confiteor is followed by a chanted Kyrie in Greek. At the other “Low” Masses it is recited in English.

I’ve only ever heard one particular priest at another parish use B once in a while. Half of us didn’t know what to respond with.

I think that if I am ever a priest, I will pretty much pretend that B and C don’t exist. I love the Confiteor and miss it when it’s not used.

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Option 2 used at our parish. Perhaps it is on weekdays.

Sometimes the celebrant will use Option 1 on a Sunday if the penitential rite is to be spoken. But since Option 3 is usually sung at my parish it is the most common for Sundays since a cantor who can intone it is present.
