In the Catholic Prayer Book,** “Blessed be God”** there is a morning prayer that asks the Lord to free our minds from all distracting thoughts, allowing us to pray continuously throughout our day.
I have come to understand through books from and about the Saints, that remind us that while we do have to earn a living, that we are responsible for the upbringing and instruction of our children, and our marriage, that our primary purpose is to strive for Sainthood and serve God.
Daydreaming, idle thoughts about things that don’t concern us, and worldly things make this goal far more difficult, and can and do often, lead to sin. This being the case, this prayer to remove distractions is very important, for without divine help, and some discipline on our part, these goals are impossible.
It takes this prayer, the rosary, devotion, sacraments, daily spiritual reading for me to stay focused. My sins have been forgiven, but I know that I still one day will have to answer “for every penny” one day, I will have to see which side of the divine scales of justice will be heavier. Like many, I have much to atone for, even if the sins have been forgiven.
Part of atonement clearly involves living a better life, and living as much of a Holy life that I possibly can, which is a tall order for this sinner. Living a holy life is a tough struggle, even for the Saints.
It seems to me then, freedom from distracting thoughts plays an extraordinarily important important part in our daily struggle towards purity, and living a holy life. Do YOU feel this petition, practice or prayer is an important step in leading a holy life? [freeing your mind from distracting thoughts?] If you have not run across this prayer or practice, do you think that freedom from distracting thoughts can make an invaluable tool in the fight against sin?
I feel it is invaluable, so much so that I decided to open this thread in an attempt to share it with others. Please share your thoughts and feedback.
