Hi Everyone,

I’ve been wondering, at important Masses (Holy week, feasts, etc…), which would you rather hear?
  • Eucharistic Prayer III chanted, even though I’d like EP I used
  • The Roman Canon spoken, even though I’d like in chanted
  • I don’t want the EP chanted. Ever.
Here’s a listing of all the EPs.

Vote above, and reply to say why.

I voted for the Roman Canon spoken, but that is mostly because I am really, really, really tired of EP III.

I am also extremely tired of EP III (we use II on weekdays, and III on Sundays. That’s it!). It is far overused. But it would be much better to hear it chanted on feasts.

And EP II? It’s so short it doesn’t even feel like a eucharistic prayer! After the Memorial Acclimation, there’s** three paragraphs**. And before the epiclesis? ONE SENTENCE. That’s it.

“The Roman Canon spoken, even though I’d like in chanted.”

Oh, and including all the [bracketed text that is optional], i.e., the lists of saints and the “Through Christ our Lord. Amen.” It’s not that much, and it’d make it, what, like a minute longer? Not even that much.

Just to see how long it would take, I timed myself speaking EP I with everything added, and it was…wait for it…ten minutes. If Mass is an hour long, do you think we should only be dedicating one–sixth of that time to the Consecration?

As far as chanting is concerned, I think it’s beautiful, although it does make the consecration significantly longer. Not that I mind, it’s just that others would. I think we should sometimes chant it, but not always. Then again I am a chant nerd and wouldn’t mind if everything was chanted.

I should have made this clear in the original post:

This is a hypothetical situation. I’d love to hear EP I chanted on major feasts, but I wanted people’s opinions, for example, if the pastor said something like: “I’ll either sing the short one, or say the long one. Which one should I do?”
Spoken and ad orientem.
Of course. ad orientem was a given. 😃

Not necessarily. Chant is not meant to be sung slowly, and especially for the EPs, where the chant is nothing more than a reciting tone, it shouldn’t take that much longer, unless your priest races when speaking.

Nor would I. The sung Mass is an ideal Mass. It should only be the chant nerds like you an me preferring this. It’s the norm, a spoken Mass is simply a “stripped down” version.

EP IV, chanted.

If not possible then any chanted above any spoken, unless my baby is getting tired and fractious, in which case EP II spoken.

EP I is my least favourite. I like the saints etc (and I often attend EF Mass so it’s closer to what I’m used to there), but I always hate the line ‘you know how firmly we believe in you and dedicate ourselves to you’; I’m usually in a good place focusing on what’s about to happen at the altar and then whoa! I get this reminder of how God always knows how useless I am! 😦

Eucharistic Prayer I, in Latin, chanted, ad orientem. 🙂

I’d prefer the Roman Canon spoken, preferably in a low voice so God alone hears it with the priest and perhaps the deacon. Let the mysterious light of Heaven pierce the world by quiet solemnity and sacred silence. In my opinion, the Preface should be chanted, and the Roman Canon used at every single Mass. 😃
