i want to say abortion is the greatest evil, but i suppose rejecting Christ is always the greatest evil. That is the evil t hat leads to all others.

But that being said, what is the greatest evil ASIDE from that one?
Progressivism, regardless of the form that it takes - fascism, communism, American liberalism, etc.

That said, I’ll reference the second half of the first verse of “A Mighty Fortress”

For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe.
His power and craft are great
and armed with cruel hate.
On earth is not his equal

The evil one remains the source of all evil in the word.

I voted atheism/paganism. That encompasses a lot of evil including pride. People who put people before God. It causes a lot of evil in this world.

Catholics voting for pro-death politicians.

God Bless
:sad_yes:

Its why we have one of the most pro aborton, pro planned parenthood (an organization that is intrinsically evil, anti family and anti christian) presidents living in the white house.

Profiteers of strife.
Profiteers of strife.
Profiteers of strife.
They are in every respectable profession and destroy noble ethics of all.

Materialism and relativism. The attitude that it is all about me. I can go on and on.
AMEN Brother Nicea325! Pope Benedict XVI in his writings frequently refers to the prevalence of materialism and relativism in our culture as the greatest threat to the souls of human beings, and to the Catholic faith.

Another great response, and a corollary of materialism (i.e. avarice). Bravo!

Poitics needs to be up there.

But I actually believe it’s the greed of corperations and the consumeristic desire they have placed on the general public. How many of you own an Iphone? Or a fancy car? We are told by these big dogs that if we have nice shiny things, we are better than the person who doesn’t have a nice shiny thing. THAT is the biggest evil on this earth, and should be eradicated.

I finally voted, and I voted “other” because I think that the greatest evil in the world today is the same great evil that has always been: PRIDE. It is the elemental evil that led Lucifer and the other fallen angels to rebel, and it is the evil that led Adam and Eve to seek the knowledge of God. It is the deadliest of the deadly sins, and the hardest to root out of our souls. I think that materialism, also a great evil, is a consequence in large part of pride. Fortunately, pride has a directly opposing virtue: humility. However, humility is perhaps the hardest virtue to consistently achieve. At least, I know it is for me…:imsorry:

Well said, and a recurring direct message of Jesus in the Gospel!

I recall going to Confession once. The priest surprised me. I was catechized on Charity. The greatest sin is sin against Charity. If Faith, Hope and Love are considered and we know that the one that endures is Charity, then Charity or Love is nothing other than God. Sins against Charity are sins agains the love of God.

I recall reading somewhere that Aquinas said the Love is willing God to another. This is nothing more than Charity. If in our actions we are not charitable, not willing God to others, then our actions are not loving.

In this context the greatest evil stems from acts that are not charitable and with that in mind many of these evils can be seen as stemming from that. So I voted for other.

I voted “other” because the greatest evil in the world today is the same as the greatest evil yesterday and tomorrow, and is the root of all the listed evils. Abortion is driven by its whims of pleasure; Socialism and Communism both are rooted in its utopian wishes; Christians do not stand up to evil because of it; the same are persecuted by those who are filled with it; atheism is its purest expression.

We are now and always will be in a great battle with Pride himself, the hunter and poacher of our souls. Pride is not merely a vice, it is a man. As love is not merely a state or action, but a selfless Being entire, so Pride is not merely a vice, but a lowly being rent asunder by its arrogance.
I agree 100% GloriousOrder. Pride is the fundamental evil that reaches back even before the Fall of man, to the Fall of angels. Milton summed it up succinctly in writing of Lucifer’s statement of defiant pride: “Better to reign in hell, than serve in Heaven.”

For me, the greatest evil in the world today is a lack of charity (love). This can take several forms, including war, murder, theft, poverty, corporate greed, persecution of religion, religious intolerance, deterioration of the family, lack of civility, and so on.
I would like to throw in my vote for “lack of love” and “internet trolls”, and also to express slight amusement at the fact that Paganism is grouped in with Atheism. Speaking for myself, I’m actually a polytheist. 🙂 However, I will assume that what was meant is “Any religion that isn’t Christian, Jewish, or Muslim”, in which case, it makes more sense.

Interesting Lokabrenna. Lack of Love truly indicates mans own thinking, And there lies the root of the issue.

While evil exists, the expediter for it is mans mind through perception then projection which breaths life into it.

Peace

I used to think the greatest evil was atheism. Now I’m starting to think it’s the effort to challenge or control God, and to make mankind superior to everything else there is.

Don't most reject Christ out of ignorance? Would anyone knowingly reject their Saviour? I wouldn't call anyone who is not a Christian evil.

I marked other. I believe it to be the moral relativism, bad pop psychology, bad theology, and more than anything, the self indulgence and egocentric mind set that pervades modern American and European culture and civilization. It is this self indulgent, inward, greedy, me, me, me atmosphere, (the primary tool of Satan), which has led to everything else on your list. Your whole list is the result of the “new age”. It’s thoughts, psychology, theology (or lack thereof), and it’s turning away from God and into the self to find all the answers.

Hey, everyone puts people before God all the time! Look at the media famewhoring, e.g., Jersey Shore. What makes them famous or more interesting than the typical university hall on weekend? Nothing, but millions of people are willing to pay to see them film a whole season of hard drinking, bad hangovers, bad hair, stupid fights, body parts, random sex, and ethnic slurs. But people would rather pay to see rubbish than to see J-Wow and Sooki in cardigans studying the Gospel.

On a less sensational scale we sometimes treat doctors and professors like gods because their names are attatched to a degree. People want to be big. It’s not just the atheists who feel that pride, and I think it’s a mistake to think that you don’t find that pride with Christians.

I used to think the greatest evil (or at least one of them) was atheism. Now I’m starting to think it’s more than rejecting God, but fighting God: the effort to challenge or control Him, and to make mankind superior to everything else there is. Most people’s responses (especially pride and lack of love) tie into this, IMO.

The murder of 40+ million people a year is terrible, although it may not be *as * bad as humanity’s apparent indifference to things spiritual(because that can lead to the loss of salvation for millions as well).
