Who is your favorite classic theologian on this list? Let’s see who wins out as the most beloved of all of them!
True enough - I wanted to put more options, but they limit the poll to ten. Can’t imagine the Church without any of the ones listed in the poll. Yet, the Church would be most bereft without St. Thomas’s work I feel.
His Summa Theologica is brilliant. And by the way can be downloaded on Kindles for quite cheap.
Oh, I beg to differ. St. Anselm is profound - his Why God Became Man is one of the most influential works in Western theology. And the ontological argument is one of the most brilliant arguments ever concocted. Nobody ever notices his reply to Gaunilo, only Gaunilo’s objections. Plus, his work On the Procession of the Holy Spirit is a classic defense of the Western understanding of the Trinity.Who has ever read more than the ontological argument by Anselm?
And even that is not exactly persuasive.
If they are not more read, they should be. Origen was probably only second to St. Augustine in terms of influence in the early Church. Scotus has provided a counterweight to Aquinas, and defended the Immaculate Conception. St. John of Damascus is the East’s equivalent of Aquinas in many respects. And St. Bonaventure is probably the greatest theologian of the Middle Ages, only second to Aquinas.theidler

Anyway, Aquinas rejected the ontological argument. It’s had a rocky road ever since.
You are about the only person I have ever encountered who has read so much of Anselm.
Whatever his intrinsic merits, I think he has not been well read. Nor were the others on that list except for Augustine and Aquinas.
Big time…poor Scotus, John, and Anselm…where are their fans???And St. Thomas still has the lead.![]()
