Polygamy Practiced by Default in the United States Through divource

Hey everyone,

It just dawned on me awhile ago that Polygamy is outlawed in the United States, but is not Stopped, As the United States hasn’t Outlawed divource. So the United States has outlawed Polygamy and practices it clear across the Board…

God doesn’t do divource, God Doesn’t Undo One flesh’s, and we have laws saying
Divource is allright…

so people get outraged, “Ohh those Mormons are practicing Polygamy.” But over 50% of those people are practicing Polygamy also, using Divource and Re-marriage as the vehicle to do so.

So just a little oddity that I thought I would bring to everyones attention…

To End Polygamy in the United States you have to Outlaw divource. You will not end Polygamy until you do Outlaw divource…

Excellent point.
This relates to the whole modern view of marriage that has bothered me since I was a teenager.
A wedding is no longer seen as a once in a lifetime experience. (I was first exposed to this via actors and actresses.)
Outside the Catholic Church to my knowledge virtually all ecclesial communities permit divorce.
BUT
All marriages that were true marriages in God’s eyes but “end” in divorce and remarriage result in a person having more than one spouse.
You have pointed out a real discrepancy in the laws of our countries that has seemingly gone under the radar for far too long. I don’t see an end to this. Not until polygamy is legalized – and this has been a threat by some groups here in Canada. (I believe the Mormon community in Bountiful B.C. has been pushing for this.)
When gay ‘marriage’ was legalized many commentators said it was only time before the same arguments would be used in favour of polygamy. As you say, it has already been going on!

Well, it depends on how you want to use the words. For starters, Catholics are pretty much alone in saying that divorce does not exist. All Protestant churches recognize it as do the Eastern Orthodox to some extent. So from their viewpoint marriage exists until death or divorce divides them.

However, given our Catholic dogma its still not a pure form of polygamy since they never really live or legally bind themselves with more than one wife/husband at a time. Even Jesus used adultery to describe it rather than polygamy.

Either way, the US law deals with legal definitions of marriage and not sacramental definitions. Those are two different things. After all, even if a couple obtains an annulment they are still considered to have been legally married.

Would you allow widows/widowers to remarry? Would that come under your definition of Polygamy? It certainly involves marriage to more than one person in a lifetime.

I have seen it commented that the difference between us and Islam is that we have serial polygamy while they have parallel polygamy.

Would you allow widows/widowers to remarry? Would that come under your definition of Polygamy? It certainly involves marriage to more than one person in a lifetime.

Widows and widowers might be married to more than one person in a lifetime, but not more than one person at one time. (If death does not occur or the marriage is not annulled one is still married, even after divorce.)
