The pope wears a cap called a “caumaro,” headgear that dates to the Middle Ages.

VATICAN CITY — Whether it’s Prada and Gucci, or just fancy ecclesiastical tailoring, Pope Benedict XVI is his own man when it comes to getting dressed.

Just days before Christmas, Benedict showed up at his weekly public audience in St. Peter’s Square wearing a fur-trimmed cap that could have passed for a Santa Claus hat.

Earlier this month, he made another fashion statement — donning a red velvet cape trimmed in ermine for the traditional papal visit to the statue of the Madonna near the Spanish Steps that marks the beginning of Rome’s Christmas season.

Coming after gossip about his wearing Gucci sunglasses and bright-red Prada loafers, the vintage styles have turned Benedict into something of a fashion celebrity.

“Those red shoes have made quite an impression,” said Vatican historian Alberto Melloni. (End of Quote)

I started laughing when I saw it. It is actually kind of fun. Some people think this pope is a “German Shepherd” who will make people shape up. Instead, maybe he will be setting some new fashion trends!!! I would like to know what other people think about this.
 
Go Papa!! lol hey if he’s got a thing for fashion let him show it off , although is it not somehwhat contradictory to the teachings of Christ to be basking in materialistic goods ( expensive shoes [Prada] lol) im not sure if they are actually Prada shoes or Gucci sunglasses , people may have just been joking around when saying that but w/e. His Holiness knows what he’s doing .😃

They very well may have been gifts…not to mention that the expensive ‘Italian’ items are probably quite a bit cheaper in Italy…
 
very true , If i owned a store and the Vatican came to me for shoes or sunglasses i wouldnt be able to charge them , id give it to them.

The new hats and cape were gifts from Princess Alexandra Borghese and the Princess of Thurn and Taxis to the pope. The shoes no doubt were sent from Prada as a gift upon his election.

I trust the media will begin to pay as much attention to what the pope says as to what he wears…

I like that red caumaro! He looks very dignified! 🙂 He definitely
has good taste in shoes 🙂 Does anyone like the Holy Father’s
voice? My husband and I think he has a very soft spoken voice.
It is quite charming to listen to 🙂
 
I seem to remember red shoes on other popes. It seems to me that Benny 16 is showing his tradionalism in his choice of shoes, hat, etc… For those of us who are looking for a return to a more traditional Faith, it is a good sign.
 
Indeed. I think it’s a bit of fun, plus he does look very good as pope. I knew he would when I saw him presiding at the Papal funeral.

Benedict is great.
