Pontifical Mass / Benediction Questions

I am preparing to edit and post a few photos from the Solemn Benediction at Saint Francis de Sales Oratory with His Eminence Cardinal Burke and I a few questions about the procession and the vesting.
  1. Are the two, usually, priests who escort the bishop or cardinal wearing the Ferraiolo during a Pontifical Mass or Benediction called the Familiari? I have found very little information in them and their role. Any detailed information would be wonderful.
  2. During the vesting at the beginning and at the end, is it called something other than “The Vesting of the Cardinal”
  3. Can anyone provide a play by play for the vesting?
  4. Is there a name for the train bearer of the Cappa Magna?

5.) Also, is there a certain prayer that is said at the foot of the alter prior to the vesting? And what is the small square kneeler called?

  1. I’ve never even seen priests wearing ferraiolos (not sure how to pluralize that) performing a liturgical act, that is, ministering in some way, in a Solemn Pontifical Mass. Do you mean cope and not ferraiolo? Because the farraiolo is a specifically non-liturgical vestment.
  2. I’ve usually heard it referred to as the “solemn vesting.” I think it would be perfectly acceptable and dignified, as well as perfectly in line with tradition, to call it, in this case, the “Solemn Vesting of the Cardinal.”
  3. This is a video of a partial solemn vesting: youtube.com/watch?v=L-XA_r7zSY4 and the only one I’ve ever come across. The only additional things he has to adorn are the mitre and the maniple, I think, and he must also be given his crozier. That’s it.
  4. Train bearer. (?Lol?) No particular title, I think.
  5. Yes, the Vesting Prayers. I think that would be a prie-dieu.

First, thank your for your response. Here are two photos of what I am referring too. Maybe that will help identify what I am talking about. They do not take part in the actual liturgy but just as escorts really during the processions.

I see. Pontifical ceremonies are not my strongest liturgical point, and so I have no idea what they do or why they are present, although praise be God if those will start making a bigger comeback!

Thank you, however they are not mine. They are from a fellow photographer and the NLM blog. I am still working on mine and once I have all the information I will post them here.

What does “NLM” stand for? Just curious.

I am a member of a TLM parish under the administration of the FSSP priests, so I see some of these vestments and the vesting each Sunday at High Mass.

Familiares. It is really a term denoting the they are members of a bishop’s household, his “family”. The Ceremonial presupposes that a bishop has an extensive household, with lay and clerical servants, chaplains, etc.

You could call him a caudatarius.

However, a personal opinion that I took from something Fortescue wrote in the introduction to his book (dealing with a slightly different matter but nonetheless) is that there is really no reason to be “fancy” and use foreign words for things when there is a perfectly good description that fits in English. The only time that is really justified is when the original language implies something that is not fully translatable, or you want to cite what a book or manual is saying when it was written in another language, to prevent confusion.
