Our Cathedral parish has started to offer the EF mass for special occasions. My guess is that it’s to see how well it’s received. The positive is that it has been well received. The negative is that some traditionalists have made a issue over trivia. Look at this pictures and then I’ll explain.

Complaint: “Father is not wearing a maniple.”

My answer: Big deal

Complaint: “The deacon is a married deacon.”

My answer: Is he a validly ordained deacon?

Complaint: “The vestments are wrong.”

My answer: Who said so? Vestments have evolved over the centuries.

For this reason, I feel that it would be good to have a non traditionalist pope preside over the EF to break the association that people make between the EF and the Ecclesia Dei institutes and exclusive to each other.

I happen to know this priest personally and his family. I can’t imagine a holier man and a better man to celebrate the EF. He is living proof that there is a continuity between the Church before Vatican II and after Vatican II. He’s one of my favorite priests in the diocese. He has save parishes from extinction through a blend of the old and the new. The only problem here is that a priest witch a physical disability cannot celebrate the EF in this church, because there are too many steps from the entrance to the sanctuary and the altar. That is not a big deal. You can always place an altar on the main floor, so that an older priest or one with a physical disability does not have to do the steps and won’t kill himself.

For this reason, I feel that it would be good to have a non traditionalist pope preside over the EF to break the association that people make between the EF and the Ecclesia Dei institutes and exclusive to each other.

Excellent quality photos. The vestments look brilliant, too, IMHO.

The vestments include a little bit of tradition and also of the local culture. Notice the palm leaves at the bottom. The palm is part of the coat of arms of the Archdiocese. This is the cathedral. They are a rather interesting shade of red too.

In an effort to try to keep the thread on track, here’s a quote from the website that is sponsoring the pilgrimage that will precede the Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, at the Vatican, Nov. 3, 2012. Scroll about a third of the way down the linked page for the fourfold reasons for the pilgrimage:

unacumpapanostro.wordpress.com/

"The pilgrimage Summorum Pontificum of All Saints, 2012, which will culminate in a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, at the beginning of the Year of Fatih has a fourfold purpose:
  1. It will be a thanksgiving. The pilgrims will assist at a Mass in the extraordinary form in thanksgiving and support for the Holy Father upon the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, which, it is known, entered into force September 14, 2007. For many priests, diocesan and religious, who now celebrate their daily Mass in the extraordinary form, is a truly immense and spiritual benefit, as well as for the faithful of the parishes - unfortunately far too rare - so they can enjoy this liturgy and transcendence. It can be said that this act of Benedict XVl gave birth to a true People of Summorum Pontificum. Those people want to thank him."
To be continued in another post…

Br. JR;

What is an “Ecclesia Dei Institute?”

Thanks!

These are institutes founded for or which now operate for the preservation and propagation of the EF. Ecclesia Dei refers to the Ecclesia Dei Commission at the Vatican, to which they work closely with.

Bump. Supposedly to be celebrated tomorrow. No news or hints in the slightest so far.

I live in Rome and would love to go to this Mass, if indeed it will actually takes place. I have never heard of a Mass being offered by the Holy Father himself for which you did not need a ticket. The tickets are free, but you need to have one to get in. Otherwise, with so many people wanting to see the Pope, the crowds would be impossible to control. We usually hear about all of the important Masses, and this would be very important, but we haven’t heard about this. If this Mass actually takes place, is it private, just for that group? Are there any diplomats accredited to the Holy See on this site? If so, did you get an invitation?

The latest news is that the Prefect of Divine Worship is presiding at this mass, not the Holy Father and it’s on Saturday, November 3. If there is another mass on schedule for November 2, it has not been made very public.

No tickets are necessary for the November 3 mass, however you should present yourself to the door at least an hour before. Once the basilica is full, it’s full.

There is one mistake in the announcement which can be ignored by religious men. It says that priests and religious who want to participate in the choir should wear choir garb including mozetta. Religious (ordained or not) do not have choir garb and mozettas. Some orders have a choir alb with cowl. The rest have habits. If you have a habit, you can wear you habit and are not required to wear a mozetta with the habit, unless it’s part of the traditional habit of your community. Mendicants normally wear habit with a cowl. The cowl suffices and no choir alb is allowed over the habit of the mendicant. Your community may allow a surplus, most do so.

Some updates 😉

Interview to Cardinal Cañizares

Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship:
I gladly accepted to celebrate next Saturday’s mass for pilgrims who came to thank the Pope for the gift of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum because it is a way to make others understand that it is normal to use the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite
I agreed because it is a way to show people it is normal to use the 1962 missal: there are two forms of the same Rite but there is only one Rite, so it is normal to use it during mass celebrations. I have already celebrated a number of masses according to the missal introduced by the Blessed John XXIII and I will gladly do so again on this occasion. The Congregation in which the Pope has called me to act as Prefect does not oppose the use of the old liturgy
The following statement I find very interesting:
it must be said that the extraordinary form of the Latin Rite must draw inspiration from the conciliar Constitution [of Second Vatican Council] which in the first ten paragraphs focuses on the true spirit of the liturgy and so is relevant to all rites
people are gradually beginning to understand that the liturgy is core to the Church and we have to revive the sense of mystery and sacredness in our celebrations. Furthermore, I believe that five years on we are able to better understand that it is not just about some faithful feeling nostalgia for the Latin Rite but about adding to the meaning of the liturgy.
Thanksgiving procession
A procession of traditionalist faithful marched through Rome’s Via della Conciliazione, towards St. Peter’s Basilica, where Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera celebrated Holy Mass in Latin and according to the Old Rite.
The mass concluded the “Una cum Papa nostro” pilgrimage called by a number of traditionalist organisations and associations from various countries and dioceses which follow the motu proprio “Summorum Pontificum” enforced in 2007.

@ Br. JR: hope to see you on November 15 at the Cathedral 🙂

The above-mentioned blog had a scanned copy of two articles published today (Nov 4) on the Catholic newspaper Avvenire. I attach my own translation of both articles to the English language.

Please do keep in mind that as a native Italian speaker I am unable to produce a translation to English that does not, to some extent, lose part of the meaning and have who knows what other issues :o. Do take it for what it is: an unofficial translation by an anonymous forum user.

I like what the Cardinal says.

There need be no conflict between the EF and OF. “Both are normal” he states.

Mass is Mass is Mass.

Simple and true.
