Pop- up churches

Around here there are, what I call, “Pop-up churches” holding their services at local schools. Everytime we drive by a different school I see banners advertizing their services. I always say “There’s another pop-up church”. My dh gets a good chuckle out of this…

Anyway it seems not too soon after I see one of these pop-ups, I get a postcard in the mail from them. They look to be very hip non-denom type of churches. Like the one I received today calls themself “ConnectionChurch” etc. Of course they have a website, & of course I check them out, out of curiosity. 😉

What I have noticed is that these churches are “members” of other larger churches. Example: around the corner there’s one who are “Members of the Lutheran Church”. The one I recieved today are “Members of the Nazarene Church”, etc. I have to go to the bottom of the “What We Believe” page to read this in very small print btw.

So my question is are these churches trying to look like the local non-denoms? You know, the hip music, coffee bars, etc type of places without calling themselves by their true names? Are they just trying to appeal to the people just to get new members in? It just seems very strange to me at least. :confused:
 
We discussed this in one of our congregations a few years back. There is a movement sweeping the country in this direction…“cafe worships” People get together in coffe shops and discuss scripture and such. It’s an apprealing thing to try to get the younger hip, typicaly yuppie type adults. We used to just call them the “what’s happening now church”. I was never really fond of it at first, but the more I realized that the church we were worshiping at was not in fact the one true Church that Jesus founded on the day of Pentacost, my confusion had me chasing all kinds of ideas to try to get a grip of “what do I do now Lord”… Well, he brought me home with my wife and chldren.

Simple answer, it’s a movement designed to attract more younger folks.
 
Well I think it’s stupid. There is nothing like the Holy Mass. The Catholic church is holy just as Jesus was…get your kids there and teach them about it.

Is this the foundation for your response…“it’s stupid”. That’ll convince people.
 
We have tons of those here in my area. It seems everyone likes the non-denominational church atmosphere. DH calls them “hallelujah-do-whatever-you-want-to” churches since most don’t have a set type of service with an order to it. Even a lot of mainstream Protestant churches areund here are doing that now-Baptist & Methodist mainly. They have a few contemporary P&W songs and a sermon where the minister or other speaker talks. I’ve been to some with family members where there wasn’t any scripture read at all. From what I’ve heard from people who go there and from my father, who is a very traditional Methodist minister (with the Order of Worship, etc., that reads almost exactly like our Catholic prayers, etc.), is that some of these churches are looking to draw in younger people so they don’t have what most people think of as “church” anymore.

People seem to be drawn to that nowadays. 🤷

And what do you base this on? Do you always try to insult the population hosting message boards you are on?

To the OP… I have only seen one of these… never knew it might be related to a mainstream denomination… interesting!
 
It’s all Rick Warren and Joel Osteen’s fault. Although Rick Warren seems to at least use more scripture than Osteen does.

It’s about hype. I was in an A/G church for too many years. Believe me, it all gets old after awhile… and also the more they protest they don’t have any “structure”. They actually do the same thing week after week .

Example: X amount of time spent in Praise and worship, X amount of time “fellowshipping”. (sign of peace) X amount of time for the sermon depending on the Pastor’s whim… X amount of time spent doing an altar call. X amount of time praying over everyone who has come to the altar.

It’s structured. It’s just not the Mass.

Praise God I came HOME!

Well from talking with my best friend who’s Lutheran, I got the impression that the Lutheran service is a liturgical type of service.
How can these pop-ups say they’re Lutheran when they seem to offer something different?

I wonder, excuse my ignorance, what the head (is it the LCMS??) thinks about these off shoots???
 
I talked to a lady several years back who said that there where different types of Anglican (CoE) in the area. Some more traditional and some less so.

I would not say that these groups are stupid I think that anytime people get together with the intent to learn more about God it can be a good thing even if it is not the best thing.

Unless the teaching isn’t about God at all and it’s all hype.

No he was a real person who many people assume was fictional.

The Methodist Church is supposed to be a liturgical type of service as well. In fact if you look in the Methodist Hymnal and the Book of Worship, the outline of a service is very very similar to ours in the Catholic Church (greeting, reading, psalm, reading, homily/sermon, creed, etc.) but so many now are following along the lines of a more non-denominational service like I described in my previous post.
 
That’s so cute…“pop up church”.

I suppose if it’s any church that meets in a school cafeteria and puts out banners to let people know they exist, my church qualifies!! 😃

We just broke ground on our building in October and there is visible progress, but we still meet in a cafeteria.

I’m surprised you were able to determine that the group is Christian from the website and postcards. All I have been able to determine is that it involves coffee and rock music from the postcards I’ve received from groups in my neck of the woods.

Their websites have a “What we believe” page, so I guess that’s good enough?? 😉

Oh and the latest postcard I got, the church’s tag line is this:

A church that fits like a great pair of jeans :eek:
 
There is one of these up the street at the Public School.

the thing I can’t figure out is how they can have Church in a Public School Building on sunday, when the Kids aren’t allowed to pray there during the week?:confused:
