Dear Brothers and Sisters,
“May the Lord give us these graces … Poverty and mercy, because that is where Jesus is”
Perhaps some of you may remember the Pope’s homily given in Cuba before visiting the USA recently. I watched it on TV but I didn’t get the depth of his words since he was speaking in Spanish and the translation was coming in “spurts” – a few words here and there. I knew the Pope was not reading his prepared script, but as I read his “off the cuff” homily today I was really touched by the beauty of it.

He was speaking primarily to the Religious and Priests who are consecrated in a special way, but he is also speaking to us who have been consecrated in baptism to become holy and to live the Gospel in our own particular state of life. The Gospel for that day was the Gospel of the “Rich Young Man”.

Many years ago I had the great privilege of meeting Servant of God Catherine Doherty at her Madonna House Apostolate. We were seated at the same table for a meal and I asked her how does one learn to live “Gospel poverty”. I shall never forget her answer to me:
“Only God can teach you poverty”.
I think the Pope’s homily is an example of God teaching His people how to live as His Son lived in this world. If you would like to read the Pope’s “Off the Cuff Homily” see HERE
