I don’t think we should assume that all marriages are the modern Western equal-partners type. Yes, in that type of marriage a wife could negotiate with her husband and persuade him to accept abstinence .
But in many countries of the world, this isn’t the case. Imagine a wife economically dependent on her husband. How can she keep him happy and providing for her children, while denying him the sex he is culturally-programmed to believe is his right? She runs the risk of him leaving her for another woman, and thereby condemning her to possible destitution.
It’s so easy to say that abstinence is the answer. No doubt the woman would be perfectly happy to abstain. But it’s not the wife that is causing the problem is it?
Do you believe that in such an unequal marriage, she would be able to get a condom on him? Maybe the thinking is that he could be persuaded by the woman to wear it otherewise she could refuse sex. But that would imply that the woman would be able to say no therefore abstinance would still be up to the wife.

Good point. The post you responded to is an example of what some martial arts instructors call a 27 Ninjas question (Read about this mindset here): basically tailoring a hypothetical so it corners the subjects so that they no choice but to engage in wrong behavior. And as you pointed out, to make this hypothetical work, one has to scootch past alot of reality.

IHopefully, as more people learn about the issues occurring globally, we can discover ways to resolve things such as poverty, oppression, equality and disease.

It appears that you still hold a certain desire to force a change of the end result, without ever changing the equation. As can be seen countless times in history, this does not successfully eradicate the targeted issue, nor does it assist the victims in gaining respect, dignity and equality.

I can see that I have come to a complete circle of repeating my same argument, so I will leave you with the last word. Good luck in your studies!
Thank you for your kind wishes and for the conversation.

A discussion like this for me, is not about having the last word but about looking at ways that people can resolve real-life problems within the context of their faith. For me, the last word isn’t said until real people’s lives are impacted for the better.

I have not read all the posts on this but I have to say that many marriages have one partner with an illness, for example diabetes which causes impotence. These couples are called to honor their marriage vows with sacrificial love for better or worse. Condoms are intrinsically evil because they take God out of the marital act. What has happened to the U.S. since abc became widely used? The divorce rates and poverty increased.
