Pope and Tango?

What is up with this Tango comment by the Pope? Did he really have to mention that?

Tango to me feels like a very inherently sensual dance. Can anyone please enlighten me how this is an appropriate thing to like as a Pope? I just heard it and was a bit shocked that he actually used to go dancing with his girlfriend back in the day. So much for telling my son or daughter not to do that anymore till they are married 😦

Or is there some different form of Tango that looks like a Waltz perhaps that I am unaware of?

The tango is a ballroom dance. I believe it originated in Argentina. There is one form of tango called the Argentine tango.

How can you see evil in ballroom dancing? :confused: It’s more like a sport than something sensual. Give it a try and you’ll understand what I mean. You’ll be too busy worrying about your feet, body position, form, and style to worry about anything sensual or sinful (other than trying not to swear when you get your arms and legs tangled up and make an error!). Also, after an hour or so of ballroom dancing, you’ll be pretty tired and possibly in pain (if you’re out of shape like me!).

And then…go try ballroom dancing on ICE, like my husband and his ice dancing partner! OUCH!! :crutches: Good luck Merle and Charlie, the Shibutanis, and Madison and Evan–U.S. ice dancers competing at the World Championships this weekend in Canada! Bring home the Gold! (Good luck to the ice dancers from ALL countries in the world–sk8 gr8!)

Have you seen the tango as danced in the milongas and even the streets in Argentina? 😉 It is, indeed, quite sensual and quite different from what we think of as ballroom dancing (waltz, fox trot, etc., which I have done for more than 20 years.)

However, it doesn’t bother me at all that our new Pope enjoyed the occasional tango when he was young; it is part of the culture. I rather like that he was quite a normal young man prior to discovering his vocation.

I think this is a cultural thing. The Tango has different forms, and how we interpret it may not be the way the Latin Americans interpret it. You may see it as sensual, they may see it as merely a folk dance. Even a waltz, to some eyes, may be seen as too sexy to some people who believe dancing is a sin. My grandparents’ denomination taught that dancing was a sin.

The Catholic Church has never taught that there is anything wrong with dancing. And there have always been dances and proms, etc. held in Catholic schools in America, even in the “old” days when I was a kid in the 50’s. There is nothing shocking at all that the Pope used to have a girlfriend and go dancing back in the day. Catholics do not believe there is anything wrong with innocent dancing, although some individuals may. We Catholics are not, and never have been Puritanical. Moderation in all things is more what we preach, and we also believe in having some fun.🙂
 
Just to throw this out there but did anyone else think of Evita when they said he was from Argentina? Don’t cry for me Argentina was going through my head all day!
