Vatican, Jun. 06 (CWNews.com) - At his Sunday Angelus audience on June 5, Pope Benedict XVI called for peace in Bolivia, and freedom from the Italian hostage Clementina Cantoni, who is being held by in Afghanistan.

After leading the Angelus, the Holy Fahter observed that many parts of the world are “experiencing social and political tensions that in some cases threaten to break out into open conflicts.” He mentioned in particular the “worrisome” situation in Boliva, where anti-government demonstrations on June 2 had escalated into riots that virtually shut down the capital city of La Paz.

The Pope joined Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in calling for the release of Clementina Cantoni, a relief worker who was taken hostage in Kabul on May 16. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has also demanded her release, saying that her abductors are enemies of the Afghan people. Flyers have been posted throughout Kabul showing Cantoni’s photo, and appealing for help in locating and liberating the woman who is credited with helping 10,000 elderly people and 50,000 war orphans in her 3 years in the country.
