I don’t miss that at all. You wanted to say that there was no ‘bottleneck’, this proves a possible ‘other’ way.
M-Eve and Y-Adam have nothing at all to do with any genetic bottleneck. Perhaps a family tree might help:
Code:
Alan Bette Charlie Dee Ed Faye Gary Helen
| | | | | | | |
+--+--+ +---+----+ +-+-+ +--+--+
| | | |
Ian Jane Kevin Louise
| | | |
+------+------+ +----+----+

Mark Nicola

Owen
Owen gets his mitochondrial DNA from Helen because she is his ancestor in the purely matrilineal line. Faye is still Owen’s ancestor, but her mitochondrial DNA did not get past Kevin, since fathers do not pass on m-DNA to their children.
Owen gets his Y-chromosome from Alan because he is Owen’s ancestor in the purely patrilineal line. Ed is still Owen’s ancestor, but his Y-chromosome did not get to Nicola, since Nicola does not have a Y-chromosome.
Helen is the M-Eve and Alan is the Y-Adam. Their existence in no way negates the existence of Bette, Charlie, Dee, Ed, Faye or Gary at the same time. On average each person in that generation will have contributed one eighth of the rest of Owen’s DNA.
We have an M-Eve (Helen) and a Y-Adam (Alan) but we do not have any genetic bottleneck.
That’s not the issue either. All of the Y-chromosones could possibly come from one man.
They all do, that just leaves all the other chromosomes to be shared out among the rest of the population at the time.
As pointed out, it doesn’t matter if there were others around her, they didn’t contribute to the mitochondria we have today, and therefore irrelevant.
They are relevant because they contributed to the great bulk of our DNA that is found in the neucleus of our cells rather than in the mitochondria. Around one percent of our DNA is in our mitochondria, the rest is in the cell nuclei. M-Eve only gave us 1%, the other 99% is from her contemporaries.
The whole point is you were highly dismissive of Eve, full stop. This shows a possibility, in the sense of a single contributor to our mitachondria.
I am dismissive of your attempts to turn the existence of M-Eve into evidence of a genetic bottleneck. M-Eve is evidence neither for nor against a genetic bottleneck.
