<< Have you or Berthault ever visited any locations where those sediments are exposed (ie the Grand Canyon for the Tonto Group)? >>

No, Berthault very carefully conducted these flume experiments in his bathtub. All right, this creation-evolution thread has officially "jumped the shark" since Peter Wilders and “Kolbe Center” has joined it.

Phil P
Of course he hasn’t. I believe he sponsored Steve Austin’s farce of a study in the Grand Canyon. He has actively funded YEC “research” for some time now.

Actually, his flume study at Colorado State was legitimate. He actually sponsored the research by Dr. Pierre Julien, a professor of civil engineering at the university. Funny thing, though. Even though Berthault paid for the experiment, Dr. Julien has never agreed with Berthault’s conclusions.

I think you should try to understand what Berthault has actually done, and then you will see that his claims for his work are grossly overstated. He has demonstrated (experimentally in a large tank or flume with flowing water) some principles of sedimentation (sorting within sedimentation beds is very well known, for example the Bouma sequence of turbidites) that geologists have known about for decades, namely the simultaneous deposition of size sorted layers out of flow where there is flow rate shear. The consequences include prograde migration and lateral and vertical sorting. This represents some sedimentation conditions in flowing rivers.
From these assertions, particularly “hecd’s” belief that the experiments only apply to rivers, it is evident he has not understood or perhaps even read the reports of the published work. If he had, he would recognise how inappropriate his remarks are, and that not one of the “irrelevances” he mentions applies.

It is sad to see how far belief in evolution can induce presumably otherwise intelligent people to make irresponsible and false charges on the basis of the majority view, rather than studying the work they are criticising. This approach by any standard displays a lack of integrity.

From the posts I have read to date there seems to be the belief amongst evolutionists that fundamental experiments which produce testable facts can be dismissed, and the authors vilified when they do not comply with the reigning paradigm. They must be wrong, they think, so they are not worth examining. The boundaries of science, however, have been mostly extended by the investigations of talented individual scientists putting into question generally held beliefs by empirical experiment. History shows that reaction of the scientific community at the outset has not always been friendly.

The difference is

Evolution : Man evolved from lesser beings through a method wholly naturalistic

and

Bible : Man was created for a purpose

There’s conflict on; who, how and why.
There is no conflict except in your mind.

I don’t know whether the data favors an historical genesis, but I do think that it is irresponsible of the scientific community to ignore data just because they might support biblical Ideas. We live in a capitalist society; science is competitive, and it would not surprise me if "cult sciences" develop in favor of some theory or other. However…

It’s really about faith. The Pope would not say that it was all right to except the theory of Evolution if it was in any way contradictory to the Catholic faith.

I have been through the conspiracy theory route; I’ve entertained the idea that the theory of evolution is necessarily Atheist, but such an idea really becomes bogus when you really start to look at the theory for what it is. It is a “mechanism” by which organic forms develop and change; and even though it is a “mechanism” it does not necessarily have to be the soul “creator” of any organism that we happen to perceive in the natural world. Therefore the evolutionary mechanism could still be a product of design, rather then a purposeless process.

A real scientist, whether he or she is an Atheist or not, will only present you with a mechanism by which organic forms have aroused naturally; that has nothing to say about the true nature or root of those organic forms, and anything that is added on to that theory that is not empirical fact, is the personal philosophical beliefs of the scientists involved; whether they be Atheistic or Theistic. Therefore, regardless of the implications that you perceive, evolution is neutral to the question of God. What the theory implies is that God did not create things like how we perceive it to be presented in the story Genesis. That being the case, this is not a matter of whether or not evolution is an evil atheistic plot
(Darwin wasn’t an atheist; he was Christian) it is a matter of Christian theology.

Evolution seems to be a fact of life. I thing the real root of the problem here is that there hasn’t been enough apologetic info on how a Christian is supposed to reasonably approach the bible in light of the Evolutionary Theory. Instead, Theistic Evolutionists seem to spend more time defending the theory of Evolution rather then providing theological relief from all the confusion that clouds the truth.

Peace

I guess you ran out of reasoned arguments.
No, I got lazy and decided to take a cheep shot instead.

Going after evolution is going to take time. I support accurate cheep shots at it. Anything that may place doubt in the mind of the brain washed evolutionist. Once you have a crack of doubt there may be oporunity for them to explore the many holes in the theory. Those against evolution have the upper hand in that the burdan of proof is upon the evolutionist. We can throw stones at the theory all day and enjoy it.

Orogeny writes:
I’ve played this game with him before. He will, in fact already has, begun his attempts to discredit me with posts like this:
Orogeny responds rather surprisingly and without giving any scientific explanations to support his radical judgement by accusing an Academy of Sciences of being wrong.
I have heard that almost verbatum from him before in another forum. Next, he will ask for my experimental evidence that shows Berthault is wrong.
The legitimate question to ask, therefore, is why, if Orogeny believes he is right he refrains from presenting his scientific case?

The gravity of his accusation against an Academy of Sciences for which he has given no scientific justification is not attenuated by his implicit lack of ability to give experimental evidence showing Berthault’s published conclusions to be wrong; it is simply compounded.

He continues:
Actually, his flume study at Colorado State was legitimate. He actually sponsored the research by Dr. Pierre Julien, a professor of civil engineering at the university. Funny thing, though. Even though Berthault paid for the experiment, Dr. Julien has never agreed with Berthault’s conclusions.
As Pierre Julian was co-author with Berthault of the article published in 1993 by the French Geological Society including the conclusions of the Fort Collins experiments, it is incorrect to say that there was disagreement between the authors over the conclusions.

The fact that his thread supporters can tolerate, and even applaud his apparent belief of being above the organs established to ensure the correct practice of science and therefore free to insult their members without any justification in terms of science, is eloquent witness of their inability to participate in a scientific discussion.

In all the circumstances, without some scholarly attempt to address directly the published material and a cessation from polemic and attempts to vilify the authors, I see no point in responding to further of his posts.

Any comments on this article?

Pope Benedict admits evidence for evolution
I don’t like the title.
“Admits” sounds like he was/is guilty of something or hiding something.
It also makes it seem like it is hard to believe that evolution is an acceptable theory… Evolution has been an acceptable approach to the origin of man for some time now. Catholics have been free to accept it for many moons.
Catholics just have to “admit” that God has a role in it and souls aren’t natural but created by God and that evolution is under God’s control. Not hard to do.
Pope JPII said that evolution is more than a theory.

I am embarassed by it. You need to know that Popes, when not speaking Ex-Cathedra, are not infallible. I think that this is a good example.

My personal belief is that the Pope is trying to be politically correct. He doesn’t wan’t to fight the Evolutionists, who are in a position to ridicule the Church as an archaic institution still in the Dark Ages.

Had the last few Popes held the line against Modernism, the current Pope would not have found himself in this position. I am not in a position to judge the Pope. He probably thinks that he is offending the least number of people. At the same time, in my view, acceptance of evolution amounts to heresey. Evolution completely contradicts Genesis.

Evolution is a NATURALISTIC explanation for our origins. If it were possible for us to evolve naturally, what purpose did God serve? Evolution is the last refuge of the atheist. Why would a Christian, let alone, the Pope believe it? You have to ask him.

He doesn’t actually say that he does, but the implication is strong. I have no problem telling anyone what I think of evoution. But then, nobody really cares what I think.

My personal belief is that the Pope is trying to be politically correct.
That is a shame. You don’t have a clue to the mind of this pope then. When has he ever tried to be PC. His non PC statements are his forte.
I am not in a position to judge the Pope
Thank you. So stop it.
He probably thinks that he is offending the least number of people.
This popel hasn’t been too worried about offending anyone. The last pope JPII the Great said that evolution is more than theory.
At the same time, in my view, acceptance of evolution amounts to heresy.
Who decides what is heretical? You or the pope?
Evolution completely contradicts Genesis.
How ? You are missing the point of Genesis if you think that. Genesis or any books of the bible are meant to instruct us in science. There is a day before the sun is created. How can there be a day without the sun. The four corners of the earth are talked about. Where are they? Bats are called birds for example.

The main principles of Genesis creation are:
1-God was involved.
2-God created everything
3-God saw that it was good.
4- God breathed life into man and created his soul
5-There are not two equal forces of Good and Evil but one source and God is good.
Evolution is a NATURALISTIC explanation for our origins.
It can be but isn’t all science including medicine naturalistic because it deals with nature. Do you reject medicine too? How about geography?
If it were possible for us to evolve naturally, what purpose did God serve?
Are you saying you know God’s mind? “My ways are not your ways”

Unfortunately for you, Peter, that isn’t the case when it comes to Berthault. The experiments have not been dismissed. Just the opposite, in fact. I know that his critics, myself included, have stated numerous times that the experiments were valid. What has been dismissed are Berthault’s erroneous conclusions based on those experiments. The author is “vilified” just as any scientist who promotes geocentrism based on his religious beliefs would be. Berthault’s conclusions are not based on the results of his experiment but on his belief in a young earth.

The legitimate question to ask, therefore, is why, if Orogeny believes he is right he refrains from presenting his scientific case?
See, Alec, I told you this was coming!

OK, Peter. I’ll present a challenge to you. I have an experiment that was conducted that involved dumping a load of heterogeneous sediments into flowing water and observing the resulting stratification. Now, here is my challenge. I challenge Berthault to present his conclusion and I will present my conclusion. This will take place at the next annual meeting of the Society of Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). We will let the expert sedimentologists and stratigraphers decide which of us accurately describes the results of the experiment and who’s conclusion is correct. Deal?

Here is my experiment:

specifically part 2 of “Major Stages of Laboratory Experimentation”.
The gravity of his accusation against an Academy of Sciences for which he has given no scientific justification is not attenuated by his implicit lack of ability to give experimental evidence showing Berthault’s published conclusions to be wrong; it is simply compounded.
Whatever.
As Pierre Julian was co-author with Berthault of the article published in 1993 by the French Geological Society including the conclusions of the Fort Collins experiments, it is incorrect to say that there was disagreement between the authors over the conclusions.
Shall I post the e-mail correspondence I have had with Dr. Julien regarding this? I did get his permission to make his e-mails public, so that would not be a problem.
The fact that his thread supporters can tolerate, and even applaud his apparent belief of being above the organs established to ensure the correct practice of science and therefore free to insult their members without any justification in terms of science, is eloquent witness of their inability to participate in a scientific discussion.
I’ll tell you what. I know that Berthault will not present for the SEPM, but if he submits his work to them and has it published, I will apologize to the Academy.
In all the circumstances, without some scholarly attempt to address directly the published material and a cessation from polemic and attempts to vilify the authors, I see no point in responding to further of his posts.
Once again, just as I predicted to Alec (hecd).

Be sure to explain in your model how a petrified tree could extend up through the rock layers. The evolutionary model doesn’t seem to have an answer to this.

Maybe the Pope could use some correction and some judgement. If I made a statement that said the discussion over evolution is absurd or leaned toward an evolutionary belief in the creaion of the first man I would want someone to correct me.

God could use a child to correct the Pope if He wanted and who knows maybe He will. We can go over the Popes head in prayer and the answer to that prayer could come through a child.

The topic at hand is stratification, not fossilization. If you bothered to read Berthault’s papers, you would know that polystrate trees don’t fit into his model. Besides, polystrate fossils have good, scientific explanations, you know.

Well of course I have read and understood the papers. I have already stated that the papers (particularly the pre-millenium ones) report experimental evidence in support of some principles of sorted sedimentation in flow with velocity shear. I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is Berthault’s claim that his work revolutionises stratigraphy. It cannot possibly bear that burden, because, apart from anything else, it is irrelevant to the formation of very important elements in the geological column.
If he had, he would recognise how inappropriate his remarks are, and that not one of the “irrelevances” he mentions applies.
And if Peter understood any geology at all, he would know how ridiculous that statement is. I predicted in my last post: “My expectation is that he [Peter] will not want to get into detailed discusion of the objections I make, but we’ll see.” I was right. Let’s see Peter explain precisely and in detail how Berthault’s experiments are relevant to any one of the following geological strata:
  • volcanic tuffs
  • igneous rock
  • breccias
  • lava beds
  • aeolian layers
  • evaporites
I’ll make another prediction that he won’t get engaged in a single one of these. Because Berthault’s work says absolutely nothing about the formation of these strata.

I have no problem with the experiments or what they show. But the fact is that they simply cannot support the grandiose claims that Berthault makes for them, and in making the ridiculous claims that he does, he has made himself unpublishable in respectable high-impact geological journals (that, and the fact that he has had no new data to publish since his last French paper in 1993 - the most recent papers, in obscure journals, are not empirical but intepretative and speculative)
They must be wrong, they think, so they are not worth examining.
I have examined your claims for his work and found them wanting, for reasons that I have stated and that you seem curiously reluctant to discuss.
The boundaries of science, however, have been mostly extended by the investigations of talented individual scientists putting into question generally held beliefs by empirical experiment.
Be that as it may be, it is easy to overestimate the maverick nature of great scientists, because the fact is that most scientists who do revolutionary work, do so from within the discipline and are freely published. For every rejected genius like Wegener, there are literally thousands of cranks who think that they have an idea that revolutionises this or that discipline. And, I am afraid that Berthault simply does not have a body of work of the weight and substance that would justify him in his claims. Very rarely, scientists reject and continue to reject good ideas, (and apart from Wegener - plate tectonics - and Marshall and Warren - the role of H pylori in peptic ulcers - it’s hard to think of any notorious cases in the last 100 years) but in 999 cases out of a thousand, they are absolutely correct in rejecting the hubris and self-aggrandisement of those like Berthault. On the other hand, in most cases, good revolutionary ideas are adopted rather quickly - take the vast and rapid developments in relativity, quantum physics, quantum chromodynamics, particle physics, cosmology, molecular biology, cell biology and many other fields of science since 1900.

All cranks claim that they are misunderstood geniuses.

By the way, are you ever going to tell us what it is that you advise the Kolbe Center on?

Any one heard of GRACE? 😃 She provides critical (name removed by moderator)ut in scientific models used in geology such as tracking changes in the Earth’s interior structure. (1)

Maps of seasonal radial (i.e., vertical) crustal deformation in and around the Amazon Basin inferred from gravity variations measured by the NASA GRACE satellites.
The left frame shows the amplitude of the deformation on January 1, and the right frame shows the amplitude of the deformation on April 1. The gravity variations are assumed to arise from water that is redistributed seasonally on the surface of the Earth. The weight of the water should deform the crust of the Earth beneath it. The correctness of this hypothesis was demonstrated in Davis et al. 2004 by measuring the radial position variations at South American GPS sites (triangles with site names on right).

GRACE Measurements of Mass Variability in the Earth System

The modeled geophysical variations included the solid Earth and oceanic tides, selected secular variations, pole-tide effects, and a combination of atmospheric pressure variations and the response of a barotropic ocean model driven by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) models of atmospheric pressure and winds (19). Consequently, the GRACE gravity estimates contain information about mass variability due to the signal introduced by geophysical phenomena not already modeled and the residual signal, on average, from omissions in the a priori models (20). * (3)

Haven’t we always allowed for the possibility of Evolution? I thought only literalist Evangelicals (like those in Jesus Camp) taught otherwise?
Correct. Pope Pius IX made it clear that neither belief or research in evolution was inherently heretical even shortly after Darwin published his major work. By 1950 his successor, Pope Pius XII had put evolution as a likely truth in an encyclical (Humani Generis) and again reitererated that it is not a heretical belief.

Pope John Paul II went father in 1993 when he declared that evolution was “more than theory”. So all this is nothing new. In this instance the Mother Church has never felt that modern genetics, geology, geophysics, etc., put faith in jeopardy.

Thanks, and I just want to mention that the scentific explaination is that the rock layers were layed down at the same time. This discredits the so called fossil record greatly.
