Margarite,

I fully concur with your comments; never in all my years have I had a problem receiving the Host on my tongue.šŸ‘

This is just another excuse not to try to follow the example of Pope Benedict.:tsktsk:

:amen:

bpcatholic, did you stick out your tongue to receive or did you just open your mouth and expect the Priest to find your tongue?

I just cannot see how the Priest could miss your tongue.

:re question of training EMHC to distribute on tongue:

IMHO, while it might make sense to receive in the hand from EMHC, it doesn’t make any sense at all to receive on the tongue from EMHC.

If a consecrated host can be handled by one layman, the EMHC, then why not by me when I receive?

On the other hand, if it’s insufficiently reverent for me to put my hands on it (as I believe, as BXVI apparently believes, and as generations of Catholics have believed) why would I want EMHC’s hands on it?

It is also my humble opinion that the solution couldn’t be simpler: Get in line to receive from a Priest & stick your tongue out. [Yea, I know. The Precious Ten Minutes and all that.]

I know plenty of people don’t see it this way. In fact, I used to attend a daily Mass at which an EMHC himself, day after day, insisted on receiving on the tongue from the priest celebrant, and then turned around and handed out hosts to other laymen from his own unconsecrated hands. No comprendo.

Obviously there’s some logic or some ideas here that I don’t grasp. 🤷

Zenit: Pope Prefers Communion on Tongue

It was an EMHC. I had my tongue by my lip. I’m pretty sure I did it right. I have received on the tongue before. I even practiced the night before. Maybe she was afraid she would touch my tongue? My parish is a bit liberal and not that many people receive Communion on the tongue.

bpcatholic, what do you mean you ā€œhad your tongue by your lipā€? The technique is to open your mouth and stick out your tongue.

ASD, I never take Holy Communion from a lay person. I make sure I am in line to receive from the hands of a Priest.

Hopefully, some day we will see the end of EMHCs.šŸ‘:amen:

The tongue was ontop of my lip. One could deffintely see my tongue.

Holy Communion in the hand died out over 1200-1500[4] years ago, doubtless the Holy Spirit wished it so or it would not have happened.
There are many things that have happened that one hopes the Holy Spirit did not wish, but merely permitted. The mere fact of something happening is poor evidence it is the wish of the Holy Spirit.

…and hopefully you won’t be in a hospital or homebound with no one to bring you Holy Communion.

As a priest once told me, every prayer for vocations to the priesthood is a prayer that the ministry of EMHC’s would end.

And he’s right. šŸ‘

I pray for more priests every day. šŸ™‚

…and I also pray there will be enough EMHC for the sick & homebound until your prayers are answered.

Amen. EMHCs should be the first ones to pray that their services will no longer be needed. That their services are needed at all is indicative of a major problem.

Thank you Lux for your compassion and words of comfort.:tsktsk:

It is amazing how the Church had managed all those years ago to reach people with Holy Communion when they were home bound or in hospital.

I was a patient in a hospital and my Priest came with Holy Communion. I do, however, pray for the increase of vocations to the Priesthood.

:blessyou:

It should be noted, however, that reception in the hand never died out in the whole of Catholic Church, the assembled assortment of Churches united under the pope; it died out in the Roman Church, but at the same time, it was and still is in use in several Catholic Churches of the Eastern Rites (Armenian, and Syriac Rites, in the Armenian Church and Chaldean Church, as a minimum, that I’ve seen evidence of it for).

If it were truly the will of the Holy Spirit that it should be forever banned, should it not have been done away with in all Catholic Churches of all rites, and not just the Roman Church, one of the now 23 churches united under the pope?

Hi,

I don’t understand your sarcastic finger wagging. I visit a secular hospital where we usually offer Holy Communion to Catholic patients every day. There is no way this could be possible without EMHC.

I presume that you mean it cannot currently be offered without EMHC’s. In that I agree with you. But that is not how it is supposed to me. EMHC’s are simply a ā€˜stop gap’ measure.

The entire point to praying for more priests and deacons is so that an ordained minister will be available for ministry such as this.

Hi again,

and I agree.

I still don’t understand the sarcastic finger wagging to my post.

Paul,

I have recently started to receive Holy Communion on the tongue. I ran across this article: ncregister.com/daily/cardinal_canizares_on_communion/

I spoke with my pastor and he was in agreement that it is better to receive on the tongue. Receiving in the hand is the norm in the US so it is not ā€œwrongā€ but it is a better practice to recieve on the tongue. I was aware that there were concerns with receiving in the hand but was confused as to why it was allowed. As my understanding and faith in the Real Presence has grown so has my desire to be as reverent as possible with everything involving the Blessed Sacrament. All I needed was confirmation to make the change.

God bless.

Firstly communion in the hand in those churches is not done in the same way modern catholics do so. Please watch the video of Bishop Schneider explaining how they do so, as well as how early Christians actually received Holy Communion in the hand.

Not to mention that the development of doctrine and practise shows clearly that reverence to the Blessed Sacrament increased as time went on. If you doubt this please have a good read of the pracises of the Church in this regard. Purifications, the sacrarium, clasping of fingers and so on. It is absurd to believe that those practises were a waste of time.

Hence this is why the Pope is leading by example and Communion in the hand will again die out.
